Week One: ie and ei Rule a: Write ie when the sound is long e, except after c. Rule b: Write ei when the sound is not long e, especially when the sound is long a. Words to quiz: friend, brief, neighbor, weigh, piece, sleigh, believe, leisure, weird, field Challenge words: NONE--everyone does same list this week Week Two: ie and ei Rules a and b reviewed Words to quiz: chief, achieve, protein, height, science, foreign, their, ceiling, seize, patience Challenge words: hygiene, eighth, variety, seizure, mischief, recipient, caffeine, beige, retrieve, anxiety Week Three: -cede, -ceed, and -sede Rule c: In English, the only word ending in sede is supersede. The only words ending in ceed are exceed, proceed, and succeed. Most other words with this sound end in cede. Words to quiz: concede, intercede, precede, recede, secede, supersede, succeed, exceed, proceed, retrocede NO CHALLENGE WORDS (only different ones if you want to change would be cede words) Week Four: Prefixes Rule d: When adding a prefix to a word, do not change the spelling of the word itself. Week Six: Suffixes Rule e: When adding the suffix ly or ness to a word, do not change the spelling of the word itself. Words to quiz: slowly, usually, shyly, happily, easily, darkness, lateness, shyness, laziness, craziness CHALLENGE WORDS: cancellation, summarization, glamorous, mysterious, administration, expectantly, fortunately, gratitude, harmonize, heroism Week Seven: Suffixes Rule f: Drop the final silent e before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel. Words to quiz: aging, freezable, traceable, dyeing, mileage, diving, recognizable, approval, lining, courageous Week Eight: Suffixes Rule g: Keep the final silent e before adding a suffix beginning with a consonant. Words to quiz: hopeless, awesome, ninety, lovely, amusement, ninth, argument, truly, awful, wholly Week Nine: Suffixes Rule h: For words ending in y preceded by a consonant, change the y to i before any suffix that does not begin with i. Rule i: For words ending in y preceded by a vowel, keep the y when adding a suffix. Words to quiz: easily, cried, breeziness, tardiness, hurrying, laid, flying, daily, paid, enjoyment Week Ten: Suffixes Rule j: Double the final consonant before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel if the words (1) has only one syllable or has the accent on the last syllable and (2) ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel. Week Eleven: Plurals Rule k: To form most plurals, add s. Rule l: For nouns ending in s, x, z, ch, or sh, add es. Rule m: For nouns ending in y preceded by a vowel, add s. Rule n: For nouns ending in y preceded by a consonant, change the y to i and add es. Words to quiz: candles, mixes, addresses, journeys, stories, shoes, lunches, weekdays, libraries, puppies Week Twelve: Plurals Rule o: For some nouns ending in f or fe, add s. For others, change the f or fe to v and add es. Rule p: For nouns ending in o, preceded by a vowel, add s. Rule q: For nouns ending in o preceded by a consonant, add es. Words to quiz: giraffes, knives, thieves, videos, radios, tomatoes, echoes, heroes, pianos, solos Week 13: Plurals Rule r: Some nouns have irregular plural forms. Rule s: For most compound nouns, form the plural of the last word in the compound. Rule t: For compound nouns in which one of the words is modified by the other word or words, form the plural of the word modified. Rule u: For some nouns, the singular and the plural forms are the same. Rule v: For numerals, letters, symbols, and words uses as words, add an apostrophe and s. Words to quiz: None. Use enclosed quiz, since students are being tested on the rules, not certain words this week. Week 14: Numbers Rule w: Spell out a number that begins a sentence. Rule x: In a sentence, spell out numbers that can be written in one or two words. Use numerals for other numbers. Rule y: Spell out numbers used to indicate order. Words to quiz: None. Use enclosed quiz, since students are being tested on the rules, not certain words this week.

Week 15: Words Often Confused 1. Use enclosed notes for students to complete rules on pages 380-391. 2. Suggested activity: Place students into five groups. Assign each group one set of words to complete (part of speech, definition, and trick to remember them). The next day students will then jigsaw into new groups to share each set of notes. 3. Assign book worksheets for homework to study words. 4. Use enclosed quiz, since students are being tested on the rules, not certain words this week.
