Minilab 1 Regulated Power Supplies 1. Objective. The objective of this exercise is to develop a test plan to verify each output of the Model XP-720K Power Supply and to build & test the positive variable-voltage supply portion. This exercise will reinforce your understanding of transformers, full-wave rectification, capacitive filtering, power regulation, and creating test plans. Coupled with the construction and testing of the Model XP-720K, this lab also highlights the requirement to build and test a circuit on a breadboard prior to creating a printed circuit board.

2. Test Plan (20 pts). Whenever you design or build a circuit, you must make sure it meets the specifications. In this case, the manufacturer provided the specifications. In other cases, the instructor might, or you need to derive them from discussions with a client. Describe how you will test each specification of the XP-720K . Fill out this test plan (attached, below) completely for Lesson 4. (Note: only part 1, positive variable-voltage output, will be constructed for the breadboard demo on lesson 6. You will demonstrate all parts for the full packaged supply demo on lesson 14.)

3. Voltage Regulation Concepts (10 pts). You are given the regulated power supply topology in Figure 2 (one portion of the complete power supply) along with the parts from the XP-720K kit. You must build this part of power supply in the lab on a breadboard and test it using the test plan you created.

Circuit assembly guidance: y Use the transformer from the power supply kit and mount it in the enclosure. Follow the instructions in the manual. y For safety, use electrical tape to insulate the ends of the unused transformer wires. y Mount the regulator to the heat sink, following the instruction manual. The regulator must be cooled (with the heat sink) in order to source 1A of current.

Part 1: Transformer a) Using an oscilloscope, measure the voltage output of the transformer. Record the values below and attach a screenshot depicting your measurements. Ensure your screenshot is labeled and depicts the pertinent signal parameters/values. Vpeak = VRMS =

b) Measure the voltage output of the transformer with a voltmeter. Voltmeter Reading =

c) Do the results from a) and b) match? Why?

Part 2: Rectifier & Filter Using an oscilloscope, measure the voltage output of the rectifier / filter capacitor. Record the values below and attach a screenshot depicting your measurements. Ensure your screenshot is labeled and depicts the pertinent signal parameters/values.

Part 3: Regulator Attach a 5, 5W resistor to the power supply as the load and adjust the supply output to 5V. Using an oscilloscope, measure the voltage output of the regulator / power supply. Record the values below and attach a screenshot depicting your measurements. Ensure your screenshot is labeled and depicts the pertinent signal parameters/values.
