AssomeonewhocontributedtotheJan25Egyptianrevolutionthrougheffectiveuseofsocialmedia channels,Ivewitnessedfirsthandhowineffectivesuchgovernmentshutdownscouldbeintackling theproblemathand;wenowhaveproofthatblockingrealtimemasscommunicationservicesatthe Governmentsdiscretionisdefinitelynotthebestwaytotackletheissue.Anditsaslipperyslope.In fact,suchpotentialrestrictionstofreedomofspeechthreatentocauselastingdamagetoBritish democracyandcouldevenaffectthefreedomofrightsofinternetuserselsewhereintheworldas othergovernmentsdecidetofollowsuit.

Thefactisthatsocialmediatoolsarejustanothercommunicationchannelexactlylikemobile phonesoremailandcanbeusedforbothgoodandevil. Forexample,duringtheriotsandusingthesametoolstoorganisecriminalactivity,thepublicwas alsoalertingothercitizensandtheauthoritiesthrough#hashtagsinrealtime,astowherelooting wasbreakingout,andevenbuiltaninteractiveGooglemapoftheaffectedareas. Thenextdaysocialmediawascentraltokickstartingaseriesofpositiveinitiatives,organising groupstocleanupthoseneighbourhoodsthatwereimpactedbytheriotsandarranging accommodationforthosedisplacedbythedisorder.And,perhapsmoreimportantly,thepublicwas quicktousethesamedigitalchannelstohelpthepolicedistributepicturesofthosewanted criminalstothemassesthroughFlickrforidentificationinordertoexpeditetheirprosecution.
