Violence Against Police Speech By Peter Krause In my speech today, I will talk about violence against police officers,

the causes and effects, protection and prevention to stop violence against police. Also, what the police do for us. Police officers are very important in our society for many reasons. They enforce both local and federal laws designed to keep people safe on roads, to ensure the safety of people in public places, and protect the rights of the people of the city. Firstly, as expressed in wisegeek.com by enforcing speed limits and driving laws, they strive to keep citizens safe. By ticketing unsafe drivers, they reduce the risk of reckless drivers are putting other people in harms way (What does a police officer do). They enforce the speed limit on the roads, keeping the person who is driving safe and the others drivers on the road safe from the speeding driver. Even though people do not like cops for giving them tickets for things like speeding, texting, and not wearing their seat belts, these are the laws. Police officers do these things because they care for people and they want to keep the community safe. One of the main priorities of their work shifts is to increase citizens safety. They patrol neighborhoods on the lookout for criminals in the area. They also keep the roads safe by pursuing criminals that are trying to evade arrest. If the police didnt pursue these criminals, then there would be even more criminals roaming the streets. We would be in grave danger if there were criminals roaming the streets without law enforcement. Police officers provide security in public places like in schools, make rounds around the city, and they protect people in public places. They provide security in schools in an effort to reduce weapons, drugs and fighting to promote a safe learning environment. If they didnt

protect schools then there would be a lot more violence in schools, reducing enrollment, resulting in uneducated and unsupervised minors, repeating the cycle of violence. Often times, just by their visual presence, crime is deterred in public places. They protect the rights of the people of city by making sure that all of their possessions are safe, that people are kept safe on their properties, they make sure that people respect every ones elses rights. The police make sure peoples possessions are safe by making sure their houses are safe and will catch and punish thieves or intruders. They make sure that people are kept safe on their properties by providing help in case of an emergency and will aid however they can. They drive around the city at all hours of the day and night and make sure every ones houses are safe. They make sure that every ones rights are respected by settling any domestic disputes and settling disputes between everyone. Secondly, lets talk about the causes and the effects of violence against police officers. Some causes of violence against police are the dislike people have against police officers and the people disobey the law. Dislikes of police are a cause of violence against police because many people do not like them. Reasons that many people dislike cops are because they dislike someone telling them what to do and they dont like the police watching them. They also have a bad view of police due a previous mistreatment by law enforcement and the judicial system. The effects are mistrust of police officers, judicial system resulting breaking laws, disobeying court judgments (requiring yet more police enforcement), resisting arrest, mistreating officers as payback. Also people attack police officers in retaliation for a relative if that relative is in jail or had been mistreated. These things results in the death and injury of police officers. According to Christian Monitor.com the number of police death in the United States in 2010 was 160 officers; this was a 37% rise in deaths from the past years (Why police officers death rose).

Also according to posai.org every day approximately 150 police officers are assaulted in the line of duty and ten are shot at on duty (police officers safety). This is a terrible thing because many of those police officers have a family that loved them and will miss them forever. In the past years, police deaths are going up. I feel that we need to stop this trend because without law enforcement, our country would be in shambles. Thirdly I will talk about how prevention and protection can be use to decrease the amount of violent incidents against police officers. Two ways we as citizens can do this is to cooperate with police officers if we do get in trouble, and to abide by the laws of the city, state, and country. We can cooperate and assist police officers by not lying to them if they ask us questions. We cannot resist arrest by trying to run away or fight back. We can also not argue or fight in any way with the police officers. If we do this every one in the situation will be safer. Another thing we can do to prevent violence against police is to; abide by the laws of the city, state, and the country. If we abide by this laws we will be safer, the police will be safer, and our lives will be better. Two things that the government can do to reduce violence against police officers and police fatalities, is to give more money to police departments, and to make laws to make the consequences more severe for violence against police. If the government gives police departments more money, than they will be able to pay for more and better equipment for the officers which will keep them safer and can possibly save their lives. If the government makes more strict laws than people wont be as quick to harm police or will not do it at all because of a fear of the punishment. Overall, I talked about violence against police officers, the causes and effects, protection and prevention to stop violence against police.
