Hyperion History

Hyperion History
Company founded as IMRS in 1981. Renamed Hyperion Software Corporation in 1995. Merged with Arbor Software Corporation, the developer of Essbase OLAP server.

Oracle acquired Hyperion in March, 2007

ESSBASE Concept

Multidimensional database management system (MDBMS)

Name derives from "Extended Spread Sheet dataBASE.

Originally developed by Arbor Software, which merged with Hyperion Software in 1998.

Developed to address the scalability issues associated with spreadsheets such as Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft Excel

Essbase Product Components Incorporate powerful architectural features to handle a wide range of analytic applications across large multi-user environments. Essbase Essbasea multi-threaded OLAP database software The server acts as a shared resource, handling all data storage, caching, calculations, and data security. The Essbase Server client needs only to retrieve and view data that resides on a server. Administration Services Database and system administrators interface to Essbase Provides a single-point-of-access console to multiple Essbase Servers. Used to design, develop, maintain, and manage multiple Essbase Servers, applications, and databases.

Essbase Spreadsheet Add-in for Excel Add-in for Excel integrates Essbase with Microsoft Excel User can add the Essbase menu to access Excel. Integration Services Metadata-driven environment to bridge the gap between data stored in Essbase databases and detailed data stored in relational databases. The Hybrid Analysis feature gives business users more detail for decision making and IT managers more modularity in designing and maintaining large-scale analytic applications. Provider Services Middle-tier data-source provider to Essbase for Java API, Smart View, and XMLA clients. Provider Services supports highly concurrent analytical scenarios and provides scalability and reliability in a distributed Web-enabled enterprise environment. Smart View Common Microsoft Office interface for Essbase, Oracle's HFM, Planning and Oracle's Workspace data. Using Smart View, you can view, import, manipulate, distribute and share data in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint interfaces.

Application Programming Interface (API) Allows creation of customized applications. The Essbase API Reference provides a complete listing of API functions, platforms, and supported compilers. Developer Products Enable the rapid creation, management and deployment of tailored enterprise analytic applications. Provide a comprehensive set of application programming interfaces, drag and drop components and services. Data Mining Shows hidden relationships and patterns in organizational data. Enables better business decisions. you can plug in various data mining algorithms, build models, and then apply them to existing Essbase applications and databases.

EPM Architecture

EPM Architecture
Provides an interface to various sources for metadata Data from these sources can be imported into the system via flat files or Hyperion interface tables. Provides a direct interface to Financial Management and Planning applications Enables the creation, maintenance, and synchronization of these applications directly from Performance Management Architect. The middle tier of Performance Management Architect includes the required application services for application construction, metadata management, data synchronization, and surfacing the user interface. End users access Performance Management Architect and reporting and application content through Oracle's Hyperion Workspace.
