BTS Location
Btss are located in several different locations inside the building Bts/Antenna locations are picked according to specified service criteria to be met (coverage area and quality), affecting factors are: size of area number of floors number of passive units length and type of feeder runs attenuating materials, walls etc. Possible bts locations are i.e. service rooms, in building warehouse rooms, service corridors, cleaning rooms, maintenance rooms, power distribution rooms, parking halls, etc. Before deciding on bts locations consider is the bts in the most economical location ( power & distance to antennas, minimal amount of passive units etc.) is the feeder lines as short as possible (minimal amount of CW, feeder cost, attenuation) is the antenna in the most economical locations ( minimal amount of CW, passive units ) where is the power source for the bts where and how is the AC power cables run to the bbu where and how is the TRS cable run to the TRS equipment (MW on the roof) can antennas be located more economically and still meet the requirements

ANTENNA CONFIGURATION CASES

28

NOKIA

Presentation_Name.PPT / DD-MM-YYYY / Initials

Company Confidential

Case 1
Thick outer wall with high attenuation and thin inner wall with little attenuation e.g. basement carpark Little leakage to outdoor Low interference from outdoor Less antenna, higher output power Easy to plan for frequency reuse between buildings

Antenna

29

NOKIA

Presentation_Name.PPT / DD-MM-YYYY / Initials

Company Confidential

Case 2
Big glass windows with almost no attenuation to the surrounding e.g. open office environment Lots of leakage to and from the surrounding More antenna, lower output power Distance to co-channel cell has to be large or shadowing building in between or use dedicated frequencies

30

NOKIA

Presentation_Name.PPT / DD-MM-YYYY / Initials

Case 3
Lots of inner supporting walls causing attenuation e.g. hotel rooms Need more antenna to keep leakage down while maintaining coverage

Problem Building is tall compared with the surrounding buildings Frequencies are very tightly re-used in the area High interference Therefore required signal strength is -65 dBm Recommendation A distributed antenna system consisting of 11 antennas, 5 omni and 6 panel Antenna EIRP = 6 dBm Result Full coverage. Evenly distributed signal strength and a low amount of radiated power to the surroundings

DAS - Shopping Mall

Problem There is a need both for better coverage and increased capacity in the building Recommendation A distributed antenna system consisting of 4 antennas, 2 omni and 2 panel Antenna EIRP = 10 dBm Result The antenna are distributed in such a way that all passages have good coverage, and therefore quite a lot of traffic is caught. Signal is spread outside the mall, but mainly takes traffic from the nearby streets, which is good in this case.
