Kingston, NY--a shrinking city about 90 miles north of New York City.

site

sandwiched between the quaint historical districts of uptown and the rondout, Midtown is Kingstons other; it possesses an edge condition in the middle of town. Heterotopias, as david Grahame shane notes, can be agents of change. This project embraces the already present heterotopic nature of the site. it aims to recreate the Kings inn not just as an oddity, but a destination and an influencer; in short, a place of transition. The proposal is for a series of movie theatersconcrete bowls holding a theater, ground floor retail and supporting a rooftop park. The open ground level community space between the bowls is invitingly unconditioned. Covered spaces providing pockets of both sunlight and shade accommodate fluctuating densities of movie goers, restaurant eaters, shoppers, farmers market and winter market vendors. The concrete bowls widen as they grow upwards; they come together for structural support, and also to form a grassy rooftop which tilts slightly southwest into the afternoon sun. The daytime park becomes a nighttime theater, as Kingston denizens and visitors lounge on the lawn and watch films in a method reminiscent of bygone drive-in theaters. Molding the structure to the physical nature of the program allows it to be used more effectively as a thermally active surface.

an 80 unit, 140,000 sq. ft. apartment complex providing multibedroom housing for large families and a 50,000 sq. ft. fabrication shop occupy the Williamsburg, Brooklyn site which borders the NYC Greenway Bike routes and has easy access to the Williamsburg Bridge. ramps link every apartment to NYCs maze of bike paths. situated in a neighborhood with an industrial history, the style of the residential structures alludes to the warehouses in the vicinity.

The Montessori school features a rooftop learning garden, minitrack, bright classrooms, and a connected community center. Circulation is based on a central ramp system which bends 5 degrees at its center and overlooks upper New York Bay and Lower Manhattan. The circulation strategy allows children to connect with all parts of the school as they move from one activity to another.

Located on the Vegas strip, the Cirque du soleil Flagship features performances areas that cut through the restaurant, bar, and club. They pop up from the floor and drop down from the ceiling. The structure consists of competing elements of tension and compression which take their inspiration from a study of a Cirque performance and physically create the performance spaces.

our initial inspiration came from the experiments of Louis Pasteur which ultimately disproved spontaneous generation. Pasteurs swan neck flasks showed that bacteria and micro-organisms weigh more than air and can be impeded by gravity and geometry. Our experiments transferred these findings to water filtration, and we focused on manipulating curvature of tubes in order to form bends and traps. By altering water flow rate through pump speed, gravity, tube-branching, tube size, and curvature we were able to filter sediment at different rates.

experiment one

The Biosphere 2 attempted a closed ecosystem, and though a troubled project, it has inspired our conversion of the site. in a complex too small to naturally emulate the water cycle, significant and complex methods were engineered to produce a man-controlled system. our view of valuing water is not one of using little as water runs from faucet to sewer, but one of filtering, recirculation, and reuse. Water can heal, can give life, can bring joy, and water can also bring death. our project looks beyond grey water, as we attempt to reuse and recycle water throughout our building. Based on our language of curvature, branching, and gravity that came out of our earlier experiments, we are also using the water tube infrastructure as the building structure. its geometry informs spatial and programmatic elements of the project. Water will not just be filtered and recycled within the structure, but will be used to radiantly heat and cool the space.
