As much as 40% of the LGU s LGUs budget is allocated for managing solid waste; Around 8,000 tons of solid waste is generated in Metro Manila alone. By the year 2010, Metro Manila will generate an estimated 10,000 t/d (36,000 cu.m.), with households producing about 7,100 t/d (10,000 cu.m./d) Source: USAID, JICA

5 percent of coral reefs are in excellent condition; More than 70 percent of the mangrove forests have been converted to aquaculture, logged, or reclaimed for other uses; Half of all sea-grass beds have either been lost or are severely degraded; Red tides, which are harmful algal blooms largely caused by increasing pollution loads, p produced y yearly losses in exports of around y p PhP 1.6 billion ($30 million) during the 1990s; About 62 percent of the population lives in the coastal zone.

Why do we need a green building rating system?

A great tool to exhibit environmental p stewardship. It enables the public to easily identify green buildings; A third party certification, monitoring and verification system enables all market players to benchmark in a single system, thus leveling the playing field.

Green Building Rating Systems

BREEAM (B ildi R (Building Research E t bli h h Establishments t Environmental Assessment Method) U.K. Long track record in the UK; Not available to the publicly available for purchase, only through licensed assessors; y g Based on quantifiable sustainable design achievements.

Green Building Rating Systems

CASBEE (C (Comprehensive A h i Assessment S t t System f B ildi for Building Environmental Efficiency) Japan Structured to award high assessments to superior buildings; Simple; p Should be applicable to buildings in a wide range of applications; T suit i To i issues that affect J h ff Japan and A i d Asia.

Green Building Rating Systems

SBTool (Sustainable Building Tool) Canada Flexible may be used in different localities; Requires greater technical expertise; Green Globes - Canada, U.S. Sustainable design and construction information is submitted on-line for third party verification, Requires a Green Building Initiative-approved and Green Globes trained professional.

Green Building Rating Systems

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) U.S.
Dominant system in the U.S. market; Assessors accreditation required; Accepted by the U.S. Federal and Local Governments;

Guide Questions for the Discussion by Partners

Social What is the level of knowledge your firm has with regards to implementing green building projects? Does the country need to establish a nationally recognized green building rating system? Would you support the PhilGBC in establishing a nationally recognized green building rating system? What would facilitate the uptake of green building in industry? How would you describe your companys commitment to green building? What are the potential roadblocks that you must overcome to adopt green building practices? Technical What makes a building eco-efficient? What should be the basis of the weighing values? Business Wh t i th relevance of a green b ildi rating system to your business? What is the l f building ti t t b i ? How would you describe the potential effect of green building to your bottom line? What are the incentives that you might need to effectively implement green building?
