Experiment # 1
Objective:
To determine the reactions of a simply supported beam subjected to three loads.
Apparatus:
A metallic beam, two spring balances, meter rod, hangers & weights and spirit level.
Figure:

Procedure:
Place the apparatus on a smooth horizontal surface and then hang the wooden beam in
thread hooks connected to spring balances the positions of these hooks are named as A
and B. Then hang three weights on the beam and name their positions as 1, 2, and 3. Find
out the corresponding lengths and do calculations. Compare the recoding of spring
balances for each test with calculations. Note hanger weight is 0.25lbs.

Experiment # 2
Objective:
To determine moment of inertia of a flywheel
Apparatus:
The flywheel apparatus, stop watch, hanger & weights and meter rod
Figure:

Procedure:
To determine the moment of inertia of fly wheel arrange the apparatus in the position
shown. Then adjust an appropriate height of the weight to move down as the fly wheel
rotates. During fall simultaneously record the time required to fall through this length and
time for ten revolutions of the fly wheel. Then complete the calculations.

Experiment # 3

Objective:
To determine the mechanical advantage of a toggle joint
Apparatus:
The toggle joint apparatus, spring balance and hanger & weights
Figure:

Procedure:
Arrange the apparatus in the given position. Then load the effort weight hanger
(1.1pounds) and note the corresponding force on the spring balance. Then perform
calculation according to pattern given in the table.

Experiment # 4
Objective:
To determine the coefficient of friction of flat leather belt with cast iron pulley.
Apparatus:
The belt and pulley apparatus, spring balance, hanger and weights.
Figure:

Procedure:
Set up the flat belt on the apparatus and place a load on the hanger. Place the cord on the pulley peg
in a clockwise direction and add its load hanger. Gently add weights to the cord hanger until the
pulley is just on the point of slipping. Note the two hanger loads and the spring balance reading.
