Prosecutors doubt Vatican money-laundering pledges

Associated Press
VATICAN CITY The Vatican Bank has taken steps to satisfy tough EU and international norms on money laundering and server financing after being confronted with an unprecedented crackdown by Italian prosecutors, The Associated Press has learned. In recent weeks the bank made written and in-person pledges to pass anti-money laundering legislation, report investigate suspicious transactions, identify customers to law enforcement and create a special compliance authority. Prosecutors, though arent buying it. They claim that even as the bank was making such overtures, it broke the law by trying to transfer money without identifying the sender or recipient, or what the money was being used for. Italian prosecutors have placed bank chairman Ettore Gotti Tedeschi and his deputy Paolo Cipriani under investigation and financial police seized $30 million from a Vatican bank account on Sept. 21. The Vatican has reacted furiously, insisting that the omission of data was just a misunderstanding that could be easily clarified. It tried to get the seizure lifted, but the court refused. Now the Vatican has finally given its commitments to some of the key institutions involved in the fight against money laundering Belleville News Democrat (Illinois); October 31. 2010.

Hold leaders accountable

MEG WELLS wrote in a recent letter that the wrong people pay for sex abuse done by the [catholic] clergy. The people who need to be addressed are the bishop, monsignors, cardinals and pope. These people have enabled this abuse for hundreds if not thousands of years and we [catholics] always pay the price either emotionally or financially, Bishop Edward Braxton of the Belleville Catholic Diocese could have settled a lawsuit for quite a bit less than the going-on $7 million that will have to be paid. Wells is right, no money can take away the emotional scars caused by the abuse and cover-up, but there is plenty of financial devastation associated with this abuse mental heath expenses and legal expenses. When will the people in the pews demand accountability from those who hold the purse strings? It probably takes this kind of settlement to get us (!) to wake up and take action. Call Braxton and ask him to be personally accountable financially and ethically for the devastation caused by him, his fellow bishops, priests, monsignors, cardinals and pope. Anne Harter Belleville Belleville News Democrat, August 28, 2011: Diocese may close up to 20 parishes. 1) Aging priesthood, 2) shifts in population Nuns And lay people may be able to administer a parish day-to-dat, while priests just come to say mass and perform sacraments. KMOV television, Channel 4, St. Louis, Mo. Anchor- man, Larry Conners repeated above report about the possibility of the Belleville Diocese losing 20 parishes, by he omittted the report of having priests for mass only. Belleville News Democrat, September 4, 2011: Vatican rejects Irish criticism over sex abuse. [Note: Ireland and Brazil have been bewailing the abuse of their altar boys for two years now.] Calls prime ministers attack unfounded. [The Vatican did not deny the facts, but argued against the Prime mimisters statement that the police should be notified by the church when the abuse is dicovered. The Vatican spokesman said Ireland has no law requiring that to be done.]
