Q2: A traffic island is a parallelogram with perimeter 84m. One of the sides is 24m and a diagonal is 30 m. Find the cost of surfacing at the rate of Rs 200 per sq m. (3 Marks) A2:

Perimeter is 84 and one side is 24 m, hence the other side is 18 m. Area of the triangle with sides 18, 24 and 30

s=

24 + 18 + 30 = 36 2
(1 Mark) (1 Mark) (1 Mark)

By Herons formula, area = 36.12.18.6 = 216 sq m. Hence area of the parallelogram = 2(216) = 432 sq m. The cost of surfacing is = 200 x 432 = Rs 86,400

Q3: ABC is an isosceles triangle, where AB = AC = 10 and BC= 12. If D, E, F are the mid points of the sides AB, BC and AC respectively, then show that area of BED is same as area of CEF. Also find the area of the parallelogram ADEF. (4 Marks) A3:

In BED, D and E are midpoints, so BD = 5, BE = 6. DE is parallel to AC and half of it, so DE = 5. Therefore the sides are 5, 6 and 5. 5+6 +5 s= = 8. 2 By Herons formula, Area = 8.3.2.3 = 12 . Similarly area of CEF =12. 10 + 10 + 12 s= = 16 . 2 By Herons formula, Area of ABC = 16x6x6x4 = 48

Now Area of parallelogram ADEF = Area of ABC Area of ( BED + = 48 (12+12) = 24sq units.

Q4: Find the height of a trapezium with parallel sides 10 and 18 units, adjacent sides 7 and 9 units. Also find the area of the trapezium. (4 Marks) A4 :

Area of the triangle with sides 7, 8 and 9 units : 7+8+9 s= = 12 . 2 12x5x4x3 = 12 5 . 1 1 But the area of a triangle = Base Height = 8 h = 4h . 2 2 By Herons formula, Area = (1 Mark) (1 Mark)

4h = 12 5 , hence h = 3 5 . Height of trapezium = height of triangle = 3 5 units. (1 Mark) 1 Area of the trapezium = 3 5 (10 + 18 ) = 42 5 sq units. (1 Mark) 2 Q5: Rana has two adjacent triangular fields. He grows wheat in a field with sides 25, 52 and 63 m. He divided the adjacent field with sides 25, 101 and 114 m into two parts by joining the midpoint of the longest side to the opposite vertex. He grew rice in one part and vegetables in the other. Find the area in which he grew wheat, rice and vegetables. (4 Marks) A5 :

(1 Mark for figure) The first field A1 is a triangle with sides 25, 52 and 63. 25 + 52 + 63 s= = 70 . 2 By Herons formula, Area = 70.45.18.7 = 7.9.10 = 630 sq m. Rana grows wheat in 630 sq m. The second field ( A2+ A3) has sides 25, 101 and 114 m. 25 + 101 + 114 s= = 120 . 2 By Herons formula, Area = 120.95.19.6 = 19.5.12 = 1140 . (1 Mark) But triangles A2 and A3 have same base (midpoint) and same height, so their areas are equal. 1140 Hence, Area of A2 = Area of A3 = = 570 sq m. 2 Therefore, both rice and vegetables are grown in 570 sq m. Q5. Solve the following HOTS questions: Q1:Ram and Sham were making similar kites in the shape of a rhombus with perimeter 40 cm. They planned to divide the kite in two triangles using red colour paper for one triangle and blue for the other. Ram divided his kite in two triangles by using a 12cm stick whereas Sham used a 16 cm stick. Find how much red colour paper each of them required. (3 Marks)

A1: The perimeter of the rhombus is 40 cm, so each side is 10 cm. Ram divided his kite by a 12 cm stick. Hence he had two triangles with sides 10, 12 and 10 cm. Area of each triangle for Ram: 10 + 10 + 12 s= = 16 . 2 By Herons formula, Area = 16.6.6.4 = 4.6.2 = 48 (1 Mark) Now Sham divided his kite with a 16 cm stick. Hence he had two triangles with sides 10, 16 and 10 cm. Area of each triangle for Sham:

s=

10 + 10 + 16 = 18 . 2

(1 Mark) By Herons formula, Area = 18.8.8.2 = 6.8 = 48 The area of the triangle being same, both of them used 48 sq cm of red paper. (1 Mark) Q2: In ABC, AB = 30, BC = 50 and AC = 40. P, Q, R are the midpoints of the sides AB, BC and AC respectively. Find the area of the parallelogram PBQR. (3 Marks)

A2: P, Q, R are the midpoints of AB, BC, AC respectively. 1 1 1 Hence PB = ( AB ) = 15 , BQ = (BC ) = 25 , PQ = ( AC ) = 20 . 2 2 2 Therefore area of PBQ, with sides 15, 25, 20 : 15 + 25 + 20 s= = 30 . 2 By Herons formula, Area = 30.15.5.10 = 10.15 = 150 . Area of the parallelogram PBQR = 2(area of PBQ) = 2(150) = 300 sq units

Q3: Ganesh had a 16 x 10 rectangular paper. He had to make a kite from it, so he marked the midpoints of all the four sides and joined them to form a rhombus. He then cut the rhombus to form a kite. Later he attached an isosceles triangle with sides 5, 6, 5 to the kite as a base. Find the total area of the kite. (3 Marks) A3:

Area of the rectangle = 16 x 10 = 160 sq units. Four right angled triangles are cut from the paper to form the rhombus. 1 Area of each triangle = .8.5 = 20 , Hence area of four triangles = 80 sq units 2 Hence area of the rhombus = 160 80 = 80 sq units. (1 Mark) Now the area of the base triangle with sides 5, 6, 5 units: 5+6 +5 s= = 8 . By Herons formula, Area = 8.3.2.3 = 12 . (1 Mark) 2 Therefore total area of the kite is 80 + 12 = 92 sq units.
