Talat- the mystic

voice…

(Venu Gopal G- Malayalam Playback Singer and member of Talat Mahmood Group)

the silky voice with the mild characteristic tremor----

that sometimes seemed to throb along with the life blood coursing
thro' my veins! Amidst my huge admiration for Rafisaab, who was there
in an instant, with all the music lovers swooning, here was the
tremulous voice with an ethereal aura---- eekking into my system---a
chronic infection, invading me---the victim, unawares!! It proved to
be headstrong over the years, lasting into my middle ages, usurping
all the other musical gatherings over the years.

He reminded me of the lost innocence. All this world's good,

beautiful and pure---seemed to filter out through that voice. his
voice proved to me that music is much more than technical perfection
II

or brilliant range---all of which he possessed---- yet---everything

in that voice came out mystically. a voice that did not show off anything----but which
showcased everything in a spiritual veil!! Hereminds me of my dead uncle who
introduced this wonderful addiction
to me. He reminds me of the Radio era---when there was just the voice-
---and then---a huge imagination!! When I saw his pictures later---
and listened to the mild voice with tremor---speaking gently into
doordarshan---- the form filled out my imaginative spaces.

This might sound foolish, romantic, idealistc bluff of a singer----

but are we all not that and much more??

our inner souls. Saigal Saab's and Talat Saab's music
are the mystic journeys. Talat Saab is Talat Saab.
Nothing to compare! You have wonderfully penned...

very succinct. It takes a genius to recognize a
genius. Write-ups like this are like educative material for people
like me so that we can appreciate the finer nuances of the art of
singing.

If one tries to hum his songs he can immediately

make out that its not at all possible. In Sitar, apart from the main
strings there are also few thin strings just beneath main strings
which is called 'taraf' or 'sympathetic strings". The actual stroking
is done on the main strings while playing, and 'taraf' due to
vibrations adds melodiuos sounds to the main strings. And I feel this
is the magic in Talatji's voice, apart from his main voice we also
feel these molodius vibrations when he sings.

-wonderful singer
I am from Germany and on my holiday in South India I had the chance to listen to CDs of
this wonderful singer…
His voice has
got the mysterious elegance of the wind blowing through the Alps, and
its tremor adds to the melodious voice like the fragrance to a
beautiful rose. His mystic voice to me seems so perfect for singing
Gazals: When Talat Mahmood ji sings, we can reach a state of mystic
mood with nature and eternity

I would like to share a pleasant experiance I had of Talat Saab.
In the year 1980 Talat Saab was performing live at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. I was amongst
the audience. When the show ended the audience would not allow Talat Saab to end the
show. The curtains went down but some members went upstage and argued that in the
advertisement the song '' Jaaye to jaaye kahan'' from Taxi Driver is mentioned and Talat
Saab has not sung this particular song. The great singer was very tired but he readily
agreed and the curtains went up once again and he sang this marvellous song to
everyone's delight.
A very cherishable experiance of this great singer's golden heart

Talat mahmood was one of the very few rare singer who always insisted
on knowing the lyrics of the song before signing to sing for a
film.Only if the lyrics are good will he agree to sing the song. That
is the reason we find that all the songs sung by Talatji are realgems. If anyone were to
assess the rate of good songs as a percentageof total songs recorded by a singer the
highest rate will be that forTalat Mahmood. That is Talat Speciality-irreplaceable singer
