Introduction The Department of Finance is one of the four teaching departments in the University of Dar es Salaam Business School

(UDBS). The department prepares students for careers in finance and banking related areas including corporate finance, banking, insurance, financial management, microfinance, banking and social security. The department offers a number of course and programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Members of the department are also involved in a number of research and consultancies as well as provision of public services such as serving in various boards of directors of public and private entities. Undergraduate Programmes Two specializations are offered for undergraduate students: B.Com Finance (Corporate Finance specialization) and B.Com Finance (Banking specialization). Like other specializations in the 3-year BCom degree programme, students start to specialize in their second year of study. Students majoring in Finance are expected to have performed well in Accounting and Quantitative related courses. Good analytical skills and a fairly good command of the worldview are also expected. From the 2009/2010 academic year the specializations will be changed to degree programmes. This also marks a departure from the current practice where all students are admitted in, and graduate with BCom degree. Admissions and graduations will be for BCom in Finance and BCom in Banking and Financial Services. Admitted students have opportunity to concentrate in a number of areas through guided baskets as follows: Bcom in Finance (with concentrations in Corporate Finance, Financial Markets, Leasing and Public Finance) Bcom in Banking and Financial Services (with concentrations in Banking and Social Security)

Some of our graduates have climbed the career ladder to the positions of Chief Executive Officers and Directors of Treasury in banks, and Directors of Finance. Others have branched off to other areas including accounting and consultancy while some have gone into self employment. Cursory observations and anecdotal evidences for the past few years suggest that nearly 60 percent of graduates from the Department secure employment within three months of graduation.

New Programmes and the Future The department, as well as the School as a whole, regularly review courses and programmes to reflect changes in the domestic and global environment. Currently the department is spearheading effort to launch the following: Institute of Insurance and Risk Management (IIRM) to offer insurance and risk management courses at certificate, diploma and degree levels. Among the proposed programmes are Certificate in Insurance, Diploma in Insurance and Risk Management, Bachelor of Sciences in Actuarial Sciences and Bachelor of Commerce in Insurance Risk Management The Banking Academy to offer academic and professional programmes in banking field at certificate to postgraduate levels.
