The starting point of the underground river is located in the heart of the Andes. This ow of fresh water could be responsible for the low salinity of the sea near the mouth of the Amazon.
IN MINUTES
A team of Brazilian scientists has revealed the existence of a underground "stream" of mammoth proportions. Announced last week at an international congress in Rio geophysics, these results support the hypothesis that the Amazon forest will have two separate drainage systems.
The Amazon basin covers an area of 7,000,000 square kilometres. With twelve river basins within its territory, it has nearly 13% of freshwater on the planet. Canada contributes to 7% of the worlds fresh water.
