Socialization is a process through which a new employee learns to adapt to an organizational culture. Other newcomers have been instrumental in helping me to understand my job requirements. This organization puts all newcomers through the same set of learning experience. Most of my training has been carried out apart from other newcomers. There is a sense of being in the same boat amongst newcomers in the organization. I have been through a set of training experiences which are specifically designed to give newcomers a thorough knowledge of job related skills. During my training for this job I was normally physically apart from regular organization members. Recruitment forms identify several key traits deemed crucial to the firms success; traits are defined in concrete terms and interviewer records specific evidence of each trait. Recruits are subjected to at least four in-depth interviews. Company actively facilitates de-selection during the recruiting process by revealing minuses as well as pluses. New hires work long hours, are exposed to intensive training of considerable difficulty and / or perform relatively menial tasks in the first months. The intensity of entry level experience builds cohesiveness among peers in each entering class. All professional employees in a particular discipline begin in entry level positions regardless of prior experience or advanced degrees. Reward systems and promotion criteria require mastery of a core discipline as a precondition of advancement. The career path for professional employees is relatively consistent over the first six to ten years with the company. Reward systems, performance incentives, promotion criteria and other primary measures of success reflect a high degree of congruence. Virtually all professional employees can identify and articulate the firms shared values (i.e. the purpose or mission that ties the firm to society, the customer or its employees). There are very few instances when actions of management appear to violate the firms espoused values. Employees frequently make personal sacrifices for the firm out of commitment to the firms shared values. When confronted with trade-offs between systems measuring short-term results and doing whats best for the company in the long term, the firm usually decides in favor of the long term. The organization fosters mentor protg relationships. There is considerable similarity among high potential candidates in each particular discipline.
