Argyle, by Anna Bell

A simple v-neck worked in an all-over shadow argyle pattern created from knit and purl stitches. Deep ribbed cuffs can be worn turned up or down, and have an optional contrast trim. Difficulty Level Intermediate - Knit and purl stitches, ribbing, increases, decreases, picking up stitches.

Materials Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Aran 50gm (87m [95 yards]) 10 [10: 11: 11: 12: 12] balls A few metres of contrast colour in same yarn (optional) 4mm (US 6) and 4.5mm (US 6) needles or size to obtain correct guage Stitch marker Tapestry needle for finishing Size To fit size 81: [86: 91: 97: 102] cm (32: [34: 36: 38: 40] inches) Finished size: 86 [91: 97: 102: 107] cm (34 [36: 38: 40: 42] inches) Gauge After blocking, 18 sts and 26 rows in cable pattern to 10 cm (4 inches) using larger needles.

Stitch instructions K: knit P: Purl M1L: lift bar between last and next stitches, knit this new stitch through the back loop. 1 st increased M1R: lift bar between last and next stitches, knit this new stitch through the front loop. 1 st increased K2tog: K two stitches together. 1 st decreased. ssk: slip next two stitches knitwise, return both to left needle, knit together (or use your preferred left-leaning decrease) Stitch pattern Argyle stitch pattern is worked over 12 sts and 24 rows. Chart is read from bottom to top, right to left on RS rows, left to right on WS rows. = P on RS rows, K on WS rows all other sts, K on RS rows, P on WS rows

Instructions Back * Using smaller needles, cast on 71 [75: 79: 83: 87: 91] sts. (RS) K 1 [3: 0: 1: 3: 0] P 3 [3: 2: 3: 2: 3]. Cont in K3 P3 rib to last 1 [3: 2: 1: 3: 2] sts, K 1 [3: 0: 1: 3: 0] P 3 [3: 2: 3: 2: 3]. Cont in rib as set until work meas 5 cm (2 inches), ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles. With RS facing, start to work in Argyle pattern from Row 1 as shown above, starting with stitch marked A [B: C: D: E: F]. Each P st should fall in centre of a 3-stitch rib. Inc 1 st at each end of 7th (RS) and each foll 8th row until there are 79 [83: 87: 91: 95: 99] sts, taking new sts into pattern. Cont straight until work meas 33 [33: 35.5: 35.5: 38: 38] cm (13 [13: 14: 14: 15: 15] inches) ending with row 12 or row 24 (WS) of stitch pattern (make a note). ** Shape armholes: (RS) Keeping stitch pattern correct, cast off 3 [4: 4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 73 [75: 79: 81: 85: 87] sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 rows, then on foll 3 [3: 4: 4: 5: 5] alt rows. 61 [63: 65: 67: 69: 71] sts. Cont without shaping until armhole meas 19 [19: 20: 20: 21: 21] cm (7.5 [7.5: 7.75: 7.75: 8: 8] inches), ending with a WS row. Shape right shoulder: Keeping stitch pattern correct, pattern 20 [20: 21: 21: 22: 22] sts and turn. Work each side of neck separately. (WS) Cast off 4 sts at beg of row, 6 [6: 6: 6: 7: 7] sts at beg of foll row, and 3 sts at beg of next row. Cast off rem sts. Shape left shoulder: With RS facing, rejoin yarn and cast off centre 21 [23: 23: 25: 25: 27] sts. Cont in pattern to end of row. Work 1 row without shaping. Work left shoulder to match, reversing shapings. Front Work as for back from * to ** Shape right armhole and v-neck: (RS) Keeping stitch pattern correct, cast off 3 [4: 4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of next row. Work 36 [37: 39: 40: 42: 43] sts and leave rem sts on holder. Turn work so WS is facing. Each side of front is worked separately. Work 1 row without shaping. (RS) Dec 1 st at armhole edge of next 3 rows, then on foll 3 [3: 4: 4: 5: 5] alt rows. AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge of each RS row until 13 [13: 14: 14: 15: 15] sts rem. Cont without shaping until armhole meas 19 [19: 20: 20: 21: 21] cm (7.5 [7.5: 7.75: 7.75: 8: 8] inches), ending with a WS row. Shape right shoulder: (RS) Cast off 6 [6: 6: 6: 7: 7] sts at beg of foll row. Work 1 row without shaping . Cast off rem sts.

Shape left armhole and v-neck: With RS facing, rejoin yarn. Cast off 1 st at beg of row (centre neck). Work in pattern to end of row. (WS) Keeping stitch pattern correct, cast off 3 [4: 4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of next row. (RS) Dec 1 st at armhole edge of next 3 rows, then on foll 3 [3: 4: 4: 5: 5] alt rows. AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge of each RS row until 13 [13: 14: 14: 15: 15] sts rem. Cont without shaping until armhole matches right side, ending with a RS row. Shape left shoulder: (WS) Cast off 6 [6: 6: 6: 7: 7] sts at beg of foll row. Work 1 row without shaping . Cast off rem sts. Sleeves * Using smaller needles and contrast colour if you are using, cast on 41 [41: 43: 43: 45: 45] sts. (RS) K 2, (P1, K1) to last st, K1. Change to main colour yarn and cont in K1 P1 rib as set until work meas 5 cm (2 inches), ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles. With RS facing, start to work in Argyle pattern from Row 1 as shown above, starting with stitch marked G [G: H: H: I: I]. Inc 1 st at each end of 5th (RS) and each foll 6th row until there are 57 [59: 61: 63: 65: 67] sts, taking new sts into pattern. Cont straight until sleeve meas 48 [48: 48: 51: 51: 51] cm (19 [19: 19: 20: 20: 20] inches) ending with row 12 or row 24 (WS) of stitch pattern. Shape sleevecaps: (RS) Keeping stitch pattern correct, cast off 3 [4: 4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 51 [51: 53: 53: 55: 55] sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next 7 rows, then on foll 4 alt rows, then on every foll 4th row until 25 [25: 27: 27: 29: 29] sts rem, ending with a WS row. Dec 1 st at each end of next and each foll alt row to 19 sts, then on foll 3 rows, ending with a WS row. Cast off rem sts. Finishing Lightly block all pieces. Sew front to back at right shoulder only. Neckband With RS facing and smaller needles, starting at left front shoulder, pick up and knit 36 [37: 38: 39: 40: 41] sts down left front neck, place stitch marker. Pick up 1 st at centre neck, 36 [37: 38: 39: 40: 41] sts up right front neck, 34 [34: 36: 36: 38: 38] sts across back neck. With WS facing, work in K1 P1 rib, making sure the stitch BEFORE the stitch marker is worked as a P st. Next and all RS rows. Cont in K1 P1 rib as set to 1 st before marker. Work double decrease as follows: slip next 2 sts as if to knit. Knit next st and pass 2 slipped sts over it. Two stitches decreased. Cont as set until ribbing measures 2.5 cm (1 inch). Cast off all sts in rib. Sew front to back at left shoulder. Set in sleeves and close sleeve and side seams. Schematics
