Leadership and Organization

Peter Drucker once noted: The leader of the past know how to tell. The leader of the future will know how to ask. The leaders in the 21st century are confronted with complex challenges and traditional leadership skills are not enough to deal with them. In old days, top leaders made all the decisions and everyone else followed Innovation was R & D responsibility and most businesses operated locally. In todays world, the leader is responsible for setting a new direction, engaging with people, and convincing all the stakeholders that the direction he or she has been taken is indeed the right direction. The new leader is responsible for fostering an environment where innovation happens collaboratively and the best people are used to lead a new path. The new leader is also not afraid to experiment and to make new mistakes. Todays leader also has to operate in a global environment and therefore must be fully aware of complex global challenges. This means, he has to operate in a highly competitive world, deal with new environments, and face new business models. At TMTC, we realise that it is not enough for leaders to use the existing management techniques, but also to think about new ways to lead - and deliver better business results. The Leadership and Organization at TMTC focuses on leadership of business, leadership of people, and leadership by results to deliver the blend of leadership practices to create and develop leaders of the future.

Strategy
Some of the most critical questions for all managers from CEOs to business unit heads are, How can I prepare my company to handle uncertainties in the business environment? How do I create value for my shareholders and key stakeholders? How do I generate a sustainable competitive advantage over rivals? How do I align my organization to execute our strategy? Michael Porter in his 1996 Harvard Business Review article argues that Operational effectiveness is not Strategy. For many years, companies have tried to achieve operational excellence through 6 sigma, TQM, JIT, supply chain management and various other means and technologiesfor the most part they succeeded in their efforts. But they have realized that in spite of their efforts to create operational excellence, they could not achieve the sustainable competitive advantage they had hoped for. Strategy at its basic core has to do with positioning and trade-offs. This means not only selecting what to do and doing it better than anyone else for a long period of time, but more important to also do things differently to create an order-of-magnitude advantage over others. To accomplish this, every top leader needs to provide leadership in formulating, communicating and executing the organizations strategy to guide his or her company. At TMTC, we realise that it is not enough for leaders to develop a strategy; they also need to translate that into successful actions. Recognising this need, TMTC offers senior managers a series of leadership programmes that have strategy formulation and execution as a core component of the learning experience. Some of the customized programmes that can be offered in this area are:

Strategies for sustaining advantage during difficult times Strategies for competitive advantage and growth E-business strategy

Innovation
When we think about Nano, we think of innovation! This 100,000 rupee marvel became possible because the great mind of Mr. Ratan Tata looked at the issue of family transportation differently. Innovation is about doing things differently or doing different things to achieve extraordinary results. In todays world, innovation is absolutely essential to survive and to build future growth. Without innovation,

companies lag competitors and eventually go out of business. Innovation is not only about new products and services, but also about new processes, markets, technologies, and business models. Every innovation starts with an idea. However, debating an idea with relevant group to check its commercial viability, and then making it successful in the market place is not easy. Many small / medium / large companies have failed to successfully commercialize their great ideas. So the questions are: What does it really take to build an innovative company? How can you turn your innovative ideas into profits? At TMTC, we continually look at companies that innovate and those who make their innovations profitable. The innovation programme at TMTC aims to address this multi-layered concept and look at various tool kits that can help companies build their innovation platform. Some of the customized programmes that can be offered in this area are:

Creating New Products and Services Fostering an Innovative Culture Corporate Creativity Innovative Management

Markets and Customers

Businesses are under constant pressure to deliver consistent customer driven products and services and create a wholesome customer experience. Companies struggle with managing interdependencies between its various functions and yet deliver consistently to their customers. This calls for a comprehensive understanding of the nuances of consumer behaviour, continuously keeping track of aggressive competitor moves and keeping current with market and customer dynamics. Given the rapidly evolving customer needs and expectations, more discerning customers and a fast changing business environment, capturing customer insight is critical. There is a felt need among companies to align and immerse their managers in concepts and practice of customer centricity and focus and for its people to understand and appreciate the applied aspects of marketing. At TMTC, we realise that it is not enough to have a sound marketing strategy. The challenge is to implement it successfully to create better business impact. Recognising this need, TMTC offers senior managers a series of programmes in developing and executing marketing strategies, pricing strategies, etc that can provide competitive differentiation.

Finance
Knowledge of business finance is crucial in running any business. The primary activities of Finance are:

Ensure the availability of funds to carry out various activities of business Optimize and increase the capital through better management of funds Allocate funds to improve the overall profitability of business

To optimize each of these activities & to ensure sustained availability of resources, understanding of various aspects in business finance is critical. Finance managers have to study questions like;

How much capital is required to manage company operations? What is the best way to fund companys capital needs? How much leverage is adequate? What is the most effective way to deploy existing capital? How can the cost of capital be minimised?

How to manage the cash flow?

In the modern corporation, dynamic finance management can be a prime tool in maximising return on investment and enhanced profitability. Here at TMTC we understand that the better organizations understand Finance, the better they are prepared to meet tomorrows challenges. From basic financial skills for operating managers, to modern finance for whiz kids on the fast track, TMTC caters to both ends of the corporate ladder.

Ethics
Recent events in corporate India have demonstrated the negative impact of unethical behaviour. This makes many of us wonder why successful and business savvy professionals behave this way. The answer lies in their lack of ethics. This phenomenon is not limited to India or any specific country. All of us hear and read about it all the time. It is typically fostered by short-term greed! Enron and WorldCom are well known examples of corporate destruction by unethical behaviour. Many in the corporate world say that business leaders are under tremendous pressure to deliver in the short-term which leads to unethical behaviour. We disagree! All of us know that business leaders are expected to run their businesses as profitably as they could. However, that does not mean that they could compromise on ethics. What these leaders fail to understand is that, in the long run, they are putting their entire organization at risk. Any business that lacks ethical principles is slowly but surely moving towards failure. Here at TMTC, we believe that ethical behaviour is one of the important and essential qualities in any leader. Our customized programs are designed to help you understand how you can make a difference in building an ethical organization.
