Exercises for Descriptive Statistics Exercise 1 In the USA, air traffic has increased dramatically in the wake of airline deregulation, the passenger total was about 465 million in 1990, and is expected to exceed 850 million by 2004. Almost everybody is interested in flights being on time. Consider the following airline performance data. Table below shows the percentage of ontime arrivals for selected airlines at the 28 largest airports in the USA.

Exercise 2 A company wanted to check the fuel consumption of its new type car. A sample of 150 cars was observed with the following result: fuel consumption (l/100 km) 4.0 4.1 4.5 4.6 5.0 5.1 5.5 5.6 6.0 6.1 Total Task: a. What is the average fuel consumption of this new type car? b. What is the most typical fuel consumption? c. Calculate the standard deviation and relative standard deviation! Exercise 3 A small commercial company has 3 shops (A, B, C). The main data of these shops are the following: shop revenue (in thousand HUF) 2002 real A B C Total 72,000 208,200 plan 2003 real 38,770.2 planned revenue according to 2002 105.0 102.0 real revenue in 2003 according to the plan 102.0 105.0 2002 real 113.4 fi 13 27 41 49 16 4 150

Note: The real revenue of shop C in 2003 was 4,608 thousand HUF less than the planned! Task: Calculate and fill all the missing data in the table above!

Exercise 4 In order to check the waiting time of the guests in a fast-food restaurant a simple random sample has been selected. The waiting times of the 20 observed guests were the following: 45, 48, 49, 56, 61, 66, 66, 66, 70, 72, 72, 75, 78, 79, 81, 81, 83, 95, 102, 135. Task: a. Determine and interpret the average, the most frequent and the most intermediate positioned waiting times! b. Calculate and interpret all possible measures of dispersion! c. Calculate and interpret the quartiles! d. Calculate and interpret both measures of asymmetry! Exercise 5 The following information is available about the expenditures of the students in the canteen on a certain day: every tenth of the students spent less than 200 HUF; those students, who spent individually more than 800 HUF, paid altogether 27000 HUF; 20% of the students spent more than 600 HUF. Expenditures (HUF) 200 201 400 401 600 601 800 801 Total 600 300 fi fi gi gi si

Task: a. Fill out the table according to the information above! b. Calculate and interpret all central tendencies, measures of dispersion and asymmetry! c. Create and explain a histogram and a Box&Whiskers figure!

Exercise 6 In our College the result of a test in Business Statistics is the following: 22% of the students have more than 30, but not more than 35 points; only every eighth of the students have maximum 10 points. Points 10 10.1 20 20.1 30 30.1 35 35.1 Total Task: a. Fill out the table according to the information above! b. Calculate and interpret all central tendencies, measures of dispersion and asymmetry! c. Create and explain a histogram and a Box&Whiskers figure! Exercise 7 In a College the closing exam consists of two parts. On the first day 20 students took part in the written exam with the following results: 4, 1, 4, 5, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 5, 2, 2, 4, 3, 5, 5, 1, 1, 1, 2. On the second day the oral exams were carried out with the following results: 2, 3, 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4. Task: a. Create a statistic table form the results above, in which the results of both exams are presented! b. Compare the results of the written and oral exams by calculating and interpreting the most important central tendencies and measures of dispersion! c. Compare the quartile distribution and asymmetry of the two exams by numerical measures and graphical figures! Exercise 8 The following information is available about the distribution of lorries of a highway carrier company according to the kilometres run: there are only 2 lorries which ran maximum 30,000 kilometres; every fifth of the lorries ran more than 150,000 kilometres; 65 400 31.25 fi fi gi gi

those lorries, which ran individually more than 30,000 but not more than 60,000 kilometres, covered altogether 180,000 kilometres in distance; the company has 16 lorries which ran over 120,000 kilometres. kilometres run 30,000 450,000 30,001 60,000 60,001 90,000 90,001 120,000 120,001 150,000 150,001 Total 40 fi fi gi gi si

Task: a. Fill out the table according to the information above! b. Calculate and interpret all central tendencies, measures of dispersion and asymmetry! c. Create and explain a histogram and a Box&Whiskers figure! Exercise 9 The weight distribution of the checked in baggage at a certain flight of Malv (Hungarian Airlines) is the following: Weight (kg) 5.0 5.1 10.0 10.1 15.0 15.1 17.0 17.1 19.0 19.1 25.0 25.1 Total Task: Make a numerical and written analysis about the basic statistical characteristics of the checked in baggage!
