Jacksonville Goes to College Week October 9 15, 2011

On behalf of the Jacksonville National College Fair Committee and with the support of Superintendent PrattDannals and Mayor Brown, we are kicking off the first annual Jacksonville Goes to College Week. We have created a calendar of events for the Week of October 9th-15th that encompasses the districts commitment of equal access to a high quality education for all students and the assurance that students will graduate ready for postsecondary education and/or the competitive workplace. This week has been designed to engage families, communities, school staff, and students in activities that promote college access and success. Date Sunday, October 9 Activity Community Outreach Description The Community Involvement Office will be sending information about the weeks activities to the faith based communities and will be encouraging attendance at the College fair on Oct. 15. All Juniors and Seniors will be encouraged and allowed time to sign up for the SAT or ACT during the school day and from home. Middle school students are encouraged to visit the www.collegeboard.com and www.act.org to learn about the test. www.YCG.org also has a number of videos with student interviews about why college is important. 8-12 grade students should be encouraged to register for college fair at www.gotomyncf.com : counselors should facilitate these activities with their school staff High school based acceleration coordinators and their students will provide outreach and education on the various acceleration programs and career academies available throughout the district: School based Acceleration Coordinators and Career Academy Staff should be providing information to their school as well as feeder pattern schools. Videos will be placed on the district website for viewing. PSAT will be administered to all 10th graders and some 9th and 11th graders; PSAT will be administered to 8th grade AVID students E,M,H ALL

Thurs., October 13 College Basics 101 Elementary school teachers are encouraged to hold discussions about why college is important: talking points will be emailed to elementary principals the week of Oct. 4th. Middle and high school ELA teachers will be provided college admissions and scholarship essay writing materials: materials will be sent to each middle and high school principal the week of October 4th to disseminate to ELA teachers. All students, DCPS employees, employees of the city of Jacksonville, and private agencies will be encouraged to wear attire from their alma mater or favorite college. We are asking that elementary, middle and high schools participate and make a fun day of this. Prime Osborn Convention Center, 9 am. to 1 pm., admissions is FREE, parking is $5. Students in grades 8-12 are encouraged to attend with their families : school counselors should be disseminating information about this E, M, H
