The Brownsville Heralds Newspaper Scavenger Hunt Guide

The Brownsville Heralds Newspaper Scavenger Hunt Guide offers a wide range of activities to improve the learning skills for students in all grades. Reading comprehension, skimming and scanning, word and picture recognition, and following directions are just some of the skills your students will sharpen by completing these scavenger hunts. Traditionally thought of as effective only with elementary students, scavenger hunts are very useful in all grade and ability levels, as they can be designed to reinforce skills in specific subject areas. This guide includes 49 Scavenger Hunts that you can easily copy and distribute. Basic Organization Scavenger hunts are usually set up as a race. Because they are competitive and fun to do, scavenger hunts motivate even the most reluctant students. Teachers may want to consider offering a prize to the winning team or student. The primary objective is to see which student (or group of students) is the first to find the location of the items on the list for the correct answers to all questions provided. All students who complete the list are winners in more than one respect. Not only have they found all of the items, but now they know their way around the newspaper and have a better idea of the types of information included in their local newspaper. Allow the students to skim The Herald just prior to handing out the scavenger hunt assignment. How to Conduct a Scavenger Hunt Students can participate in a scavenger hunt as individuals or as a team. The questions can be presented orally or by simply copying the sheets in this guide. In addition to locating specific information or providing answers to questions, students could be required to cite the section and page number in order to get credit for their answers. This requirement can vary depending upon teaching goals. Math teachers, for example, may require students to add up the numbers of the facing pages. English teachers could require students to provide all answers in complete sentences. The scavenger hunt could be limited to just one page or section of The Herald, depending on the age and ability of the class. Teachers could impose a time limit on each question or on the complete scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunts can be completed by clipping and pasting the answers, recording the answers next to the question, or by circling the items in the newspaper. Create your own Scavenger Hunt! The information contained in this guide can be adapted to meet your needs in your classroom. Scavenger hunts are easy to write and a great way to review and reinforce the subject matter being taught in your classroom. If you dont see what you need in this guide, create your own scavenger hunt! Sandy McGehee, Ed.D. Director of Educational Services
