Apple has not only become the leader in the personal computing market, but it is also the worlds largest mobile phone and computer company, in addition to being the most valuable firm in the world, according to market cap. Some six weeks ago, Apple surpassed oil giant Exxon-Mobil to achieve this milestone. Apple stock, at present, trades at over $400 a share. The firm has nearly $80 billion in cash reserves and no long term debt. Apple has grown like a weed, co-founder Steve Jobs told the city of Cupertino, California last month, when Jobs personally appealed to the City Council members to obtain permission for building a new spaceship-like campus to house some 13,000 of employees. Jobs request and engineering plans were quickly approved by the city. Apples new mega-campus is a 150-acre beast, to be built on land the company bought from rival Hewlett-Packard. Ironically, HP was the world leader in PCs until a few months ago, before Apple surpassed it.Looking like something right out of the TV series Star Trek, Apple plans to open the new 2.8 million square foot super campus by 2015. The futuristic facility contains lots of greenery, is five stories tall, and has an auditorium which can seat 1000 people. In addition to plenty of space for workers, food courts, fitness centres, trees and eco-friendly greenery, the building will be far more than just another large office dwelling.

Some 300,000 square feet will be used to house Apples vaunted state-of-the-art research and development laboratories which continue to churn out some of the industrys hottest selling products, including Macintosh computers, iPods, iPhones and of course the iPad. Apple has seen its stock price and growth increase over 2000 per cent ever since cofounder Steve Jobs returned to the company. Although he recently stepped down as the firms CEO, Jobs remains with the electronic behemoth and is now the Chairman of the Board. Apples new CEO, Timothy Cook, will make his formal debut in the first week of October, as the company prepares to launch its highly anticipated iPhone 5 and rumoured iPhone 4S. Recent surveys by mobile phone providers indicate that as many as one third of Apples installed base plans to upgrade to the iPhone 5, assuring that the new device will sell millions of units. Apple plans to ship nearly 100 million iPhones and 60 million iPads in the upcoming year, buoyed in part by explosive growth in both China and India. The rumoured iPhone 4S is purportedly a reworked version of its venerable iPhone 4, but at half the cost. Apple has indicated that they want a lower priced model to compete against inexpensive Google Android-based offerings. 1.0v1 Sep 27, 2011 Kal K.
