Michelle Kim Mr. Stasi Western Cultures 10 August 2011 The Man behind the Apple A Brief Background of Steve Jobs What is the initial thing that comes to mind when one declares Apple.? A fruit? No, these days, something more along the lines of: Technology. Steven Paul Jobs was born in Los Altos, California on February 24, 1955 and adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs. He grew up in the apricot orchards, which later became renamed as Silicon Valley. Jobs is the cofounder and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. With his guidance, Apple has produced one of the worlds bestselling music devices: the iPod, the revolutionary iPhone, and of course the innovative Macintosh. Steve Jobs has truly changed the world with his revolutionary music playing devices, computers/laptops, and the iPhone. Apple Today Apple is leading the digital music wave these days, having sold almost 200 million iPods. At the time of this writing [Inside Steves Brain] (November 2007) Apple had sold a whopping 100 million iPods, and is on track to ship more than 200 million iPods by the end of 2008 and 300 million by the close of 2009. (Kahney 3). In fact, the Apple iPod is the fastest selling digital music player of all time. Jobs greatly helped in the success of the Apple iPod by being able to cut out the ideas that were cherished but unlikable. He discontinued the iPod mini which many people despised him for, yet he replaced it with the iPod nano, which is loved by many. When

Apple first introduced the iPod it had the world stunned. Up until then, they had clunky, unattractive mp3 players that didnt hold nearly as many songs as the iPod does. It is highly doubted that any other music player can hope to beat Apple at this point, and despite their competitors revealing iPod killers which turn out to be purely incompetent, they are unaffected. Apples Roots From the start in 1977, Apple Computer grew rather quickly, releasing the Apple II in April 1978. It was, according to the ad copy, a truly usable computer, the first for the masses. (French 32) Apple sold more than $300 million worth of computers in its first five years in business (French 52). However, in April 1985, Steve Jobs was removed as head of the Macintosh division, and he technically had no job with the company. In September 1985, rather than being fired completely, he resigned himself. After Jobs left, the company started going downhill, and when he soon after, became Apples interim CEO, he slowly started to help out Apple. In 1998, his first year as interim CEO, Jobs seemed to be doing things right. He pushed the companys iMac computer into the marketplace Apple sold 278,000 iMac computers in just six weeks. (French 55). The iPhone The iPhone itself has been a major breakthrough in technology. It almost seems to be transforming the meaning of cell phone. Launched in June 2006, the iPhone is already radically transforming the massive cell phone business pre-iPhone and post-iPhone. (Kahney 3) In fact, it is predicted, that by 2009, Apple will have sold over 30 million iPhones. Already, it has sold well over 2 million. Steve Jobs has well impacted the world with the iPod, Macintosh, and iPhone. Apple is creating the ideas and dreams that people have had, and opening them to the public, in a way

where they are easy to use, and fun to use. Jobs is CEO of one of the most expansive fields of our time, and he has done much to transform the meaning of phone, computer, and music player, in less than a lifetime.
