Lesson 2

True、False or Not Given?

John and Susan have been married for 15 years. They have 2 daughters, Elise and Cecilia. Elise has just
turned 16 and her sister is 10 years old. Elise and her boyfriend, Michael, are planning to run away together
to get married.

1. Elise and Cecilia are twins.

2. John and Susan do not like Elise’s boyfriend.

3. Elise doesn’t like her parents.

Not Given。

有談及的,就是 Not Given。
Google tests wireless web access in its home town
Google is moving into the provision of internet access for the first time, though only in its home town of
Mountain View, California.

The internet search company is offering free wireless access to more than 72,000 inhabitants of the town.
It is part of an experiment to see what applications its developers can come up with and what services
people use while out and about.

Google will be able to test location-based services and contextual advertising. Using a person's position to
provide them with information is still in its early stage but is likely to be the next online battleground.

Based on the information in the above news report, decide whether these statements are True, False or
the information is Not Given.

1. Google did provide internet access services in the past but failed to satisfy
its customers. _________
2. Google is situated in California. _________
3. The provision of free internet access is a move against their largest rival -
Microsoft. _________
4. Google wants to see what services people use when they are not at home. _________
5. The development of location-based services is mature and is ready to
enter the market. _________

Apple recalls laptop batteries

Apple is recalling almost 2 million laptop batteries as fears of computers catching fire spread, following a
recall by Dell last week.

The company said yesterday that it had received nine reports of overheating laptops, and was issuing an
immediate global recall of 1.8m batteries in cooperation with the US consumer product safety commission
(CPSC).

Last week Dell, the world's biggest computer maker, issued a recall of more than 4 million batteries after
laptops caught fire.

Apple said it knew of two cases of minor burns from overheated laptops, and asked customers to check with
its website to find out if they are affected. The recall affects a large number of 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch
PowerBook G4, and 15-inch PowerBook G4 laptops sold since October 2003. The CPSC said most were
sold in the US, but 700,000 were sold elsewhere. It is not yet clear how many went to Britain.

Both recalls are batteries made by Sony.

Based on the information in the above news report, decide whether these statements are True, False or
the information is Not Given.
6. Dell issued the recall in cooperation with the US consumer product safety
commission (CPSC). _________
7. The laptops made by Apple have caused injuries. _________
8. Apple’s customers could go to Apple’s website to see if their laptops were
affected. _________
9. All substandard Apple laptops with overheating problems were sold in the
US. _________
10. If you bought a laptop from Apple in November 2003, your computer
might have overheating problems. _________

解說:

4. 第二段的最後部份, “out and about”就是不在家的時候,意思和題目中“not at home”一樣。
5. 最後一段第二句, “ using a person’s position to provide them with information”解釋了前一句的
“location-based services”是什麼,而這個服務目前仍在最初階段( in its early stage)。
