From Our Pastor PLUGGING IN. . .
Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 1 Peter 4:9-10 I always conclude our new members orientation sessions with a heartfelt plea. I ask those in attendance as forthrightly as I can to look through our Newsletters and Bulletins and to pick out a couple of areas of fellowship and ministry that interest them. I suggest to them that they step out of their comfort zone, make whatever contact is appropriate, and plug in to our shared life here at FHPC. This, I tell them, is a sure antidote to feeling like an outsider. It is a way to make a fairly large congregation into an aggregation of smaller, more intimate ones. I do this because I have seen far too many folks make that first step toward entering into a church community, yet fail to make that next critical transition into becoming a part of that community. This generates a sad and all-toopredictable, outcome. Some of these folks remain ever on the margins of church life without ever experiencing the fullness they sought. Others simply drop from sight, remaining strangers terminally disappointed by failed expectations. All who were party to the potential of these relationships are reduced in very real ways when this occurs. The church loses complexity and personality. It loses the rich possibilities inherent in the God-given gifts that these folks bring with them. This is sad. The church member loses a sense of belonging, the joy of participation, and the satisfaction of blessings faithfully shared. This is painful. The indwelling kingdom of Jesus Christ loses energy. This is tragic. But, lets expand this conversation a bit. Heres a couple of questions: Are you satisfied with where you find yourself in our community? Are you plugged in to life here at FHPC? If you cant answer yes to both these I am pleading with you to look carefully through this copy of In Touch in search of places to invest your gifts and talents. Youll certainly find plenty of opportunity within the quickening rhythms of our fall activities. Why settle for life on the margins? Its much richer here in the center of this joyful and vibrant community. Come claim your place. Come share yourself with the rest of us. Come plug in. Lets light this hilltop up! Grace and Peace,

The financials for the month of August reflect a positive income/expense ratio even though the budgeted amounts were skewed considerably higher. The budgeting process for August 2011 was based on last years records which included five Sundays versus this year where there were only four Sundays. This accounts for the large difference between actual and projected budget numbers. More importantly, the Year to Date ratio of income over expense remains at a very positive level over the projected budgeted ratio. What a wonderful surprise we had in mid-August when a large number of boxes were delivered to the church officeit was the new wonderful fabulous FHPC cookbook! Even though the cookbooks arrived ahead of schedule they will go on sale immediately on Sunday mornings. Winter visitors need not worry well have plenty available in the fall but you can also call or email us and well reserve your copies. The cost for the cookbook is a bargain at $15.00. There is also a limited number of cookbook stands which sell for $1. In addition to getting a cookbook for yourself, we encourage you to purchase books for others on your Christmas and birthday lists! Remember the profits will support our Sunday Fellowship. An additional benefit of this project is the building of church community through cookbook conversations. After you try a recipe we urge you to seek out the recipe donor and thank him or her. Most people love to talk about their recipes and these cookbook conversations may help us to get to know each other in new ways. THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! The FH Presbyterian GOOD DEEDS DOZEN Outreach Program organized a yard cleanup September 10, 2011 for an elderly woman that was simply unable physically and financially to handle the job. Years of overgrowth had become a CODE VIOLATION with the TOWN. Lisa Kern, Organizer of the yard cleanup for The FHPC GOOD DEEDS DOZEN Mission Outreach Program found out about the violation and started to organize volunteers to help. Phyliss Kern with KERN REALTY donated water, Gatorade, ice and snacks, STARBUCKS donated the coffee, Carman and Jimmy with 1st CLASS LANDSCAPING and MAINTENANCE trimmed palm trees and cut the worst of the cactus and Kevin from FOUNTAIN HILLS CONSTRUCTION CLEANUP donated his dump truck so we could haul away the debris. Chris with SAM the BUG man sprayed the entire property for pest control. Additional hard working WONDERFUL volunteer workers included Chandler Roesch, Sue Lickman, Joel Nelson and his son Joel Jr., Neal Lyons and his wife Sherry and Robert Weidman. We completed the entire front yard. The truck was full!! We were all very hot and tired! We will be scheduling the backyard cleanup for October 22nd at 7am so please mark your calendars. Just Coffee: Caffeine with a Mission With the month of September begins the Holiday Boxes schedule which includes: separating, sorting and counting what is on hand to see how many more of a particular item that needs to be purchased; prepare boxes of Christmas cards to be signed (will be available in the Church office again this year) or from me; begin fundraising to help cover overseas shipping costs; purchase and ready a variety of snack items; put together 100 boxes that will later be filled; prepare shipping labels and customs forms. By the end of the month, my living room, office and garage will have a Holiday atmosphere and look to it. I am hoping that as many as possible will be willing to fill out and sign the cards that will be placed in each box. Last year as many as 12-15 different cards went into each box. Just imagine yourself as being the recipient of one of these Holiday Boxes so far from home, reach in and pull out a dozen or more signed cards from a dozen different people back home. Think that signed cards are important? You bet they are. Eyes on God
The move to our new home was very stressful on our puppy. As we sold our furniture and boxed up our belongings, he became increasingly anxious. When the big day came and the truck was packed, we took one last walk through the empty house. Unable to comprehend what was happening, our anxious dog stayed right at out feet. He could make no sense of his circumstances but trusted us to take care of him. During that traumatic time, he never let us out of his sight. That reminds me of King Jehoshaphats prayer when a mighty enemy advanced against him and the situation was desperate. Jehoshaphat prayed, We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you (2 Chronicles 20:12, NRSV). God came through for his people that day, and hell come through for us, too, when all seems lost. Just stick close and keep your eyes on Him. - Kari Myers

Evangelism Ministry
On Sunday, September 25th at a special session meeting eight wonderful individuals were accepted for membership into our awesome church family. Brooks Benjamin is joining by Reaffirmation of Faith. Brooks was born in Hawaii and raised in Newport Beach, CA. He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Gayle, for 27 years and they have 3 daughters Amie, Kimberly and Kristen (who is attending ASU). Brooks has worked in the Real Estate business for 25 years and as a result of the recent bad economy his company relocated him to Arizona 10 months ago. He says he loves boating and is a frustrated photographer. Brooks saw our sign that says imperfect people wanted and thought thats my tribe! Gary and Debby DeBernardi are joining by Letters of Transfer. Most of you already know Debby because she is our new Director of Christian Formation Ministries. Debbys past experiences include various roles in nursing, education, and ministry. Debby and Gary live in Ahwatukee and have lived in Arizona for 32 years. They have two married daughters and three grandsons. Gary has a CPA practice and they both enjoy hockey, hiking, fishing, scuba diving, golf, books and spending time with their grandchildren. Debby says they are looking forward to forming new friendships in this church. Christian and Katja Hissler are joining our church by Reaffirmation of Faith. They came to Arizona 4 years ago from Germany and moved to Fountain Hills 3 months ago. Katja and Christian have 3 children, David, 14 years old, Johanna, 9 years old and Charlotte, age 6. Their children participated in our Vacation Bible School this summer. Katja is a Montessori teacher and Christian works for a German software technology company. Christian says that he loves that he can ride a bike to work all year round and see something beautiful every day here in our community. Katja says that she loves the fact that she doesnt have to drive a manual transmission car because she had such a hard time in Germany driving the hilly terrain with a manual transmission. Kristina and Tyson Robinson are joining by Letters of Transfer. They are both from Iowa and met 10 years ago during their freshman year at Central College in Pella, Iowa. Tyson works at the Mayo Clinic as a Historical Unit Coordinator while Kristina is presently working at Four Peaks Fitness but is seeking employment in education. They have recently gotten very active with our youth group and Tyson has joined our Celebration Ringers. They enjoy watching movies, traveling, and they both have been competing in the Mayo Corporate Dragon Boat team. Kristi says that she will always welcome free cooking lessons because she has a lot to learn, and Tyson----well Tyson says he likes turtles!!!! Ellie Ruiz was out of town and unable to be here on New Member Sunday. She is joining by Reaffirmation of Faith. Ellie was born in Guatemala and came the US in 1975 and then to Fountain Hills in 1987 where she raised 4 children. She first came to this church 11 years ago with her friend Doug Katonak and is so excited to finally become a member. Ellie has two professions; she is a tax preparer and also a caregiver. She says that one job is for the money and the other job is food for her soul! We are so happy to add these wonderful new members to our church family. Please be sure to introduce yourselves to each one of them and get to know them better!

In August several of the PW Women attended the movie THE HELP. It is an adaptation from the book by Kathryn Stockett. This #1 Best Seller, and currently #1 at the Box Office, has been reviewed by our Hooked On Books Club. Prior to attending the movie, this outing consisted of dining together with much lively conversation. A fun time was had by all!! This is the second year this group has formed such an outing. This could turn into a yearly event, and if it does, we will keep you posted. FLASH. . . I would recommend you see this movie, and even better still, read the book. -Barb Wyman

Some years ago, a newspaper profiled the lives of an elderly Christian couple. When the pair was first married, they decided to use their God given gifts to help others. They focused primarily upon serving through their church and life-care retirement homes. Their love and service down through the years prompted a foundation to honor them for their caring philanthropy. Upon receiving their award, Mr. And Mrs. Davis Illingworth spoke of the motto that had been the guiding rule of their lives: Count your blessings, and make your blessings count.

Christian Formation Council
Well fall is in the air again (hopefully) or maybe I should just say we are gearing up to welcome in our fall programming. First of all I want you all to notice the change in the title of our department. We felt that since we hired a Director of Christian Formation, this entitled us to an update in our name also. So at our meeting the Terri Schmidt, Elder first part of September we voted to change our name to something more sophisticated and updated. Now on to other exciting news.Where does someone who loves to talk, begin her ramblings? We had a fun summer, with a few gatherings and major events that brought lots of people both young and old to our church. We hope to continue with these fun events in the hopes of bringing in new families, so be sure and stay tuned to our columns and special printouts in the bulletins on Sundays. If you have family members, or neighbors, or friends who are looking for a place to call their Church. please be sure and to include them in our fun. We love meeting new people. It has occurred to me, that most of you probably dont know who is on our council. Those that have so faithfully helped me come up with these fun ideas and who I make work, so hard. So let me introduce you to some of my favorite people: Charlie Eberspacher, Paula Eberspacher, Carol Hencz, Sandy Heunisch, Michele Sivets, Shawn Uphoff, and of course we wont forget Debby DeBernardi and Pastor Bill. This list would not be complete if I forgot to mention the person that makes me look so smart, Marta Ludwig. Thank you to all of you who make my job so much easier and so enjoyable. Now to get on with my news.. through a book by William Wilberforce called, Real Christianity. So if you have Tuesday mornings open and think this sounds like something you are interested in, come on by as the door is always open and the lights are on.

Wednesday Evening Family Nights

Wednesday evening studies have started up again. We are close to the end of our 5 week Ron Bell video series. We start the evening with a Potluck dinner at 6:30pm with the whole family. Then we separate into groups: Adults, Children, Junior High, and Senior High, or as needed. Our next study will be a 6 week series with Dr. Tim Smith in a Journey Motif. This should be a fun and exciting few weeks. As you can see we are trying to make Wednesdays more family friendly and have something for all ages, so be sure to invite anyone and everyone to join us. What more could you ask for with good food, family, friends and good discussions.

Nursery
Our nursery is in need of major updates. We need to replace the cribs due to changes in health codes. There are many other things that are going to be needing updated also. With Anabelle here, and hopefully more young families to follow, we will have to make sure we are up on current health code laws and regulations. We will be providing a wish list at a later date, so please be ready to help out if you can.

Mens Bible Study

Attention all Men interested in fellowship while studying the Bible. John Bivens will be leading the study again this year on Thursday mornings at 7:00am. There will be coffee and sweet rolls to help entice you. The men meet in the Adult Center, so come and join them if this appeals to you. As I wrap up my ramblings, I want to take this time to thank all the people in the Church who have contributed so much to help with the Churchs Christian Formation. You all have been so great to help whenever I have sent out pleas. I want to ask all to continue praying as we try to continue to build our department. I also would like to take this time to say thank you to the people in all the departments that make our church run. If it takes a village to raise a child, how many more does it take to run and support our church? I have an idea that we have enough support to do it now, but we always have room for more. Pastor Bills Bible Study

We are still journeying down the roads in Mark. We meet most Sunday mornings at 10:30 in the Adult Center. Pastor Bill has patiently led us and answered our questions and listened to our interpretations. We have helped each other grow and learn. We would love to have all who are interested in learning what Mark has to say to us, come and join us every Sunday morning right after fellowship. Mark has been a fun book to read and talk about, so come join in on our fun. As we read Mark, it is almost like watching a movie, so many subplots and lots of entertainment.

Koffee Klatch has started back up for the season. They meet most Tuesday mornings at 9:00am in the Adult Center. Reverend Stan Jones leads his faithful followers in some interesting discussions. This year he is leading the class

By Norm Collins This year is really moving along, isnt it? By the time you read this we will be into October. If you are like me, you would have the time go by a bit slower. But it wont. We simply have to accept things as they are and be grateful for the time we have. Anyway, this being the beginning of Fall means we cant be far from that event you all have been eagerly waiting for namely, the annual Stewardship Campaign! Yes, indeed, it is right around the corner. Because my term on the Session is coming to an end in December, we have a transition plan that will have Jerry Maples serving as the co-chair of this years campaign. As you might suspect co-chair is a euphemism for one who does 90% of the work, but has to share the title with someone else. That someone else is me. Seriously, I am extremely grateful to have Jerry involved. He is certainly well qualified for this role and has developed an excellent plan. Additionally, he is a member of the Finance Committee and is well aware of what it will take to move this church from where it is to where it needs to be.

As I have said before, our church has some significant challenges in its future, but it also has many great assets chief among these are a truly wonderful and highly skilled staff and a congregation that is loaded with talent, wisdom and a deep desire to serve God. We all know our collective aim is to see this church prosper in terms of expanding its service to God across our community. In closing, I encourage you to seek Gods counsel through prayer as you consider your monetary and volunteer commitments to Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church in 2012.

God will give us the answer if we ask Him the question and then really listen.

A Guide for Giving I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc. is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. Music Ministry
I am writing this after the worship service which just welcomed the Celebration Singers back into worship after the summer break. I'd like to thank you on behalf of the Celebration Singers for all your loving, kind and supportive comments on their return into the worship experience! There are always fewer singers at the beginning of each season, and they are so joyful in welcoming each other but, they are always extremely happy when the other members show up! There is always warming-up and adjusting when re-uniting choral voices, determining blend, clarifying rhythms and tempos, though, unlike other choirs who perform a few times a year, a church choir must be ready to go within two w e e k s of rehearsal. They have a special strength, and a definite calm that comes from prayer, as we stand, singing a freshly rerather good choices in music. These kids have such good attitudes, and are truly committed to making something happen. When they get around each other it really does start happening! Their flexibility and willingness makes for a good rehearsal. Wednesday nights are great nights for those who love to fellowship awhile over such tasty potluck dishes, then be further challenged while studying the ways of Christ. Wednesday Evenings are very, very good! Soon, the "Pearwood Recorder Consort" will begin their rehearsals. This is a wonderful group of musicians, directed by Barb Wyman, performing music from all eras. We have soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders being played by musicians who all play other instruments with great skill, yet, also love pla ying and exploring the historical ambiance of a musical instrumentation by playing compositions that are one hundred to one thousand years old and continuing through to some very contemporary pieces. Its a wonderful group of musicians. If interested in joining this group, you may speak with Barb, or let me know, and we'll set you up rehearsing with us on Thursday's at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary music room. An exciting new history of Fountain Hills, Rising Above the Rest The Story of Fountain Hills, AZ was recently published and is available for check out from our church library. It was written and compiled by Alan Cruikshank, Fountain Hills Times publisher, and two of our church members former Mayor Jerry Miles and Jean Linzer. The book relates the history of our town from its founding days in the late 60s through 2010. Over 90 stories provide the backgrounds, highlights, and sidelights of our towns people, businesses, organizations, churches, and town government. Besides providing the story of the beginnings of our own church, you will find that quite a few of our church members have played a big part in the growth of our town over the years as well as the quality of life we have here. Hundreds of color photographs add to this publications appeal. For those who would like to have their own copy, it is for sale at the River of Time Museums store located in our towns Library building. - Barbara Oakeson

Mens Fellowship
CALLING ALL MEN
The Mens Fellowship at FHPC is inviting men to join us for food, fellowship, fun, and service (OK, so that doesnt start with an f). The Mens Fellowship group generally meets on the second Saturday of each month between October and May. We occasionally meet on the First or Third Saturday to accommodate special events. The meetings begin at 9 am with a hearty breakfast (courtesy of Chefs Jack and Phil), usually follow with a speaker, and end with fellowship. The meetings generally run 90 minutes. We have many events planned for this season including the traditional Christmas Decoration/ Chili Dump, Valentines Brunch, a good ol fashioned Barbeque, and many more. We are also involved in service work both here in Fountain Hills with the Helping Hands Food Bank, and in The Valley with the Phoenix Rescue Mission. So if youre looking for a way to connect with other Christian men in our community, look no farther. Our first meeting is on Saturday, October 8, at 9:00 am. We hope to see you there!

Hospitalized? Call the church! If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.

The Caledonian Society of Arizona

Since many Presbyterians claim Scottish or Scots-Irish heritage, we wanted to reach out to you and let you know that we have a Scottish heritage organization in the metro area. It is called The Caledonian Society of Arizona, and we meet on the second Thursday of the month at the Irish Cultural Center (ICC), 1106 N. Central Avenue, at 6:45pm. We have a brief business meeting, followed by a program relating to our heritage. Refreshments are then served and we use this time to visit. The Society has sponsored an annual Highland Games and Gathering for many years and in many locations. We are currently in Steele Indian School Park, at Third Street and Indian School. Our next Games and Gathering will be in March 2012. The last full weekend right after St. Patricks Day! Please check out our website at www.ArizonaScots.com or join us for one of our meetings.
