REVAMP YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE
by Holly Humphreys
our muscles adapt quickly to any repetitive routine. Remember that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over while expecting different results. This holds true for your workouts. When your results stop, its time to do something new. The problem - your muscles have adapted to your routine. The solution - its time to apply the concept of muscle confusion. Muscle confusion is a way to keep your body guessing by changing your routine. STRATEGY #1: USE A DROP Set Drop sets are often used to fight off exercise plateaus. This technique is great for increasing muscle strength, endurance and for adding to the cardiovascular benefit of your workout - which results in more fat burn. This is how to do a drop set: When you perform an exercise to exhaustion, dont stop there. Drop the weight by 80% and do another set. STRATEGY #2: FOCUS ON NEGATIVES Most people completely miss the benefit of the negative in each repetition by allowing the weight to drop quickly with little control. It is understood that the negative portion of each repetition is just as important as the positive portion; possibly more important. Focus on the negative portion of each repetition by lowering the weight very slowly. Concentrate on the negative contraction, and make each repetition count. STRATEGY #3: USE ACTIVE REST Every minute of your workout is an opportunity to increase intensity and to burn more fat. Dont waste precious minutes with long rest periods. While it is important to catch your breath if you feel winded, most of the time you would benefit more from an active rest. Do one of the following activities for 30 seconds between exercises and turn your regular workout into High Intensity Interval Training. High Knees with Alternating Punches: Alternately bring each knee high to your chest in a quick jumping movement while alternating forward punches at shoulder level. Side-to-Side Jumps on Bench: Stand on one side of an exercise bench. Place the foot closest up onto the bench, jump up and switch feet, then land on the opposite side of the bench. Side-to-Side Ab Twists: With feet close together, jump and twist your legs left to right - holding your abs tight. Keep a bend in your knees and swing your upper arms with each twist. STRATEGY #4: MODIFY THE EXERCISE There are certain exercises that are considered staples in the gym. The squat. The lunge. The chest press. The shoulder press. The bicep curl. You get the idea... While you shouldnt throw these exercises out the window, find creative ways to modify the familiar motion in order to challenge your muscles. Try these exercise modifications: Squat on a Bosu ball or balance board. Place a weighted bar across your shoulders and do walking lunges. Do a full squat between each repetition of shoulder presses.

Floral Perspective
By Annette LaRocque, Murrieta VIP Florist As the days become shorter and the evenings turn cooler, its time to take our homes from summer to fall dcor. Autumn is my favorite time of the year. The most beautiful warm colors are all around. Fall is the season where we begin planning celebrations for family and friends to get together. Fall is a time for traditions, fun times and good memories. Youll want your home to be welcoming; warmth, love, laughter and flowers are just the right combination. Whether you are visiting friends and family or staying home and having a get-together, flowers are the perfect way to add color and beauty. When visiting family and friends, a beautiful fresh bouquet of flowers is a great way of thanking your host. Also, the personal touches you add to your home make it uniquely yours. Whatever your style, flowers and plants are the perfect way to add beauty and warmth to any celebration. Here are a few tips on decorating with flowers for fall and things you may want to consider. Accessorize a large table by placing a long narrow floral centerpiece in the center of the table. Add a few smaller accent pieces or candles on each side of the arrangement for an added effect. Create a centerpiece in a treasured family vase or bowl, or in seasonal pieces such as a cornucopia or a utility vase surrounded by dry corn cobs. Place small potted plants staggered down the table with fall leaves or flower petals in between, then set votive candles on the petals. Use vegetables or fruits as accents in your floral arrangement. Garnish your serving trays with flowers and greens. Scatter colorful fall leaves, flowers and votive candles along the center of your dining table. Float flowers in crystal wine glasses. Place a single long-stem rose on each plate to welcome your guests to the table. Decorate small desserts with flowers or make an ice ring with flowers to chill champagne or wine. Place a garland of fruit, flowers and fall foliage over your front door.

ne only needs to walk into Honeycutt Farms in Murrieta to know you are in for a treat. Friendly staff, cozy furnishings and yummy smells greet you as you enter. Petunia the Pig greets you at the curb, and the pig motif is carried out through the interior of the eatery. With fresh flowers at every table, the aura is cheerful and comfortable. I had the pleasure of sampling several of Honeycutts wares, and can say without hesitation that this is going to become a new regular stop for my family. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a broad spectrum of selections for each meal at very reasonable prices. Breakfast specialties include biscuits and gravy, omelets, waffles and pancakes and some of the best bacon Ive ever eaten - thick cut and perfectly crisp. I was told their fried eggs are unique in flavor, but I wasnt told the secret - I dont know what they do, but that egg was awesome. The sausage gravy was served over a fluffy biscuit and was peppery and loaded with chunks of sausage. For lunch, the options are extensive - sandwiches on freshly baked bread, burgers, soups and salads ... everything homemade and wonderful. I tried their Honeycutt Ham Classic sandwich, which had a thick serving of ham on squaw bread with crispy lettuce, a light layer of mayonnaise and a tangy spread of honey mustard - delicious. And enormous, I might add - I could only eat half of the half I was given! On the side I had clam chowder - full of clams with a thick, potato-filled stock. The owner told me their most popular soup is served on Wednesdays - homemade split pea and ham. I also tried their cucumber salad, which was thinly sliced cucumbers in a tangy vinegar-based, sweet dressing. Onion rings were thick sliced and crispy and delightfully not greasy, a perfect complement to the fish and chips, available only on Fridays. The battered fish, served with tartar sauce, was flaky and tender. Also on the side was a serving of the seafood salad - shrimp and crab, tossed with diced celery in a light dressing - very tasty. Honeycutt offers dinner specials every night except Sundays, when they close after the lunch crowd. Specials include Stuffed Pork Loin with Cinnamon Apples (Tuesdays) and Prime Rib with au jus and Horseradish Sauce (Saturdays), but their regular dinner menu will leave no one unhappy. Evening entrees are served with choice or soup or salad, roll or parmesan toast, and two sides from a varied list, including mashed potatoes and farmhouse rice. The next time you are looking for comfort food in a friendly place, you need to check out Honeycutt Farms - in Murrieta for over 20 years.

For the customers who savor the hands-on leisurely where did the time go? shopping experience at Grannys Attic, the antique mall has added an old fashioned soda and candy shop as well as Grannys Cup & Saucer, a deli soup and sandwich eatery for those who want to rest their feet for a while. Freville, who also owns Old Town Antique Faire, a large Western-style wooden antique emporium found in the heart of Old Town Temecula, also said some familiar antique-ing get-togethers bring in new and repeat customers. We do have a regular appraisal service, and were planning big events like our upcoming outdoor flea market in October and the Thanksgiving and holiday open houses in November and December, said Freville. Next door to Grannys Attic Antique Mall is Grandpas Antique Depot, another large antique mall of one hundred shops spanning more than 11,000 square feet.
brought in to Grannys Attic by hopeful individual sellers for placement on eBay. Many of the dealers at the antiques mall also advertise on eBay, but an increase in fees by the giant auction site has led some dealers to switch to Craigslist, an online network of classified ads, for selling their items, he added.
on the MAP
According to owner Linda Majenski, selling online is necessary in this day and age. Grandpas Depot has an eBay store. Its been an important survival strategy because shopping on the internet is how a lot of antique shopping is done in the world today, said Majenski. Still, nothing beats the experience of actually seeing and touching the antique or vintage item before you buy it, she added, explaining that being identified as the place to find specific items can bring people in to shop. Right now, Grandpas Depot has a fantastic collection of Victrolas, or what was called talking machines, Majenski said, referring the invention that revolutionized the way that people were able to bring recorded music into their homes for the first time in history. And were also known for having a large display of antique toys. One thing that shoppers today may not know, said Majenski, is that, because the current downturn in the economy has forced many people to sell their antiques at reduced values, the prices of many big antique items such as furniture are getting to be comparable in price to newer, less well made furniture. Right now, smart buyers can find high quality antique furniture made with the kind of great craftsmanship that is impossible to find in todays furniture, and they can buy it for nearly what they would pay for something new, she said. Its a great time for finding great deals on great antique furniture. John Sterbenk, owner of The Country Porch, another large front-porch-and-wood building located on Front Street in Temecula, agrees that prices of antique furniture have dropped substantially in the last year. I recently sold a complete bedroom set, French, all beautifully made from solid wood, for $1800, said Sterbenk, but a year or so ago that same set would have sold for $2800. Sterbenk, whose mall has seventy vendors, said he has been seeing that everything collectible has been dropping in price in the past two years. And one trend that he has noticed at both The Country Porchs eBay store and the Temecula building is the increased interest in items that were part of everyday life after the 1970s.
Sixty percent of the buyers now were born in the 1970s and 1980s, said Sterbenk. Not only do those buyers have money to spend because they are ones who seem to have jobs right now, but they also have a sentimental attachment to items from those decades. So collectibles from that era may not be considered antiques, but they are very marketable now. For the Temecula Valleys antiques sellers, figuring out how to keep their wares marketable in a changing economy and a generational shift of collectors will continue to be the key to success. And keeping a good attitude could turn out to be the winning attitude. Terry has been actively involved in our community for years. But what most people may not realize is that Paradise was recently recognized with a prestigious award from General Motors. Mr. Gilmore traveled to Detroit this year to personally receive the 2010 Dealer of the Year award from GM. This honor is bestowed on only the top 2 percent of the Chevy and other GM company dealers in the United States. In order to receive this award, dealerships must have top performance in sales and customer satisfaction, including customer retention and other criteria, and top ratings in standards of excellence. Only fifty dealerships in the country were recognized with this award, and the other recipients were typically much larger dealerships which makes the win by Paradise even more exciting. Terry Gilmore says commitment is everything, and that has been evident from his long tenure with the Boys & Girls Clubs. Over the years, he has been involved in many different nonprofits, and describes himself as a leader - he says he loves the challenge of taking chaos and making something grow from it. Paradise is known for being an active community partner, and supports many events and different charitable organizations throughout the year. Giving back is important to Mr. Gilmore as well as his entire staff. Terry and his business partner, Bob Gregory are very proud to be a part of the Temecula Valley community.

And one great way for Temecula Valley residents to get in the mood for pie this autumn is to take a day trip up to the late 19th century gold mining town of Julian, now the mother lode of apple cider and pie country! About an hours drive southeast of Temecula, Julian was born of gold rush fever in 1870 and is a designated historical district dotted with pioneer store fronts and Old West ambience. Located among oak and pine forests in the north end of the Cuyamaca Range at 4,200 feet above sea level, the areas rich soil and a cold-winter climate proved to be ideal for growing apples, prompting local residents to begin trading in their gold pans for pie pans around the late 1880s. Today, crops of apples with gold mine names like Pippins, Julian Duchess, Queen Cox and Liberty are still providing Julian with a sweet economic boom a century after the local ore diggings played out. Visitors can really get into the apple-mania beginning October 1st and 2nd with a two-day Apple Days festival that kicks off the communitys annual two-month Julian Apple Days. Featured at the festival held at Menghini Winery will be apple displays, gold panning demonstrations, music, dancing, and

But if youre craving more than pie in Julian, there are some other fun ways to spend your time no matter what day you decide to visit. Got a little gold fever? Try your hand at panning for the yellow stuff at the Julian Mining Company which provides gold panning demonstrations, use of a gold pan, and a vial to collect your treasure after an hour of panning. Prices are $8.95 for adults and $6.95 for kids. Visit www.julianminingcompany. com for more information. A living history tour of Eagle And High Peak Mine, one of Julians original mines, is also another highlight in the area. Panning for gold dust is included in the tour, but the real nuggets of entertainment are the actual experience of walking through the mine corridors and the guides informative stories about the life of a miner of the day. But take a dark night stroll around historic Old Town Temecula with Dale Garcia, and youll start to believe that there are plenty of stories around these parts that have become a whole lot livelier than the original starring players ever were. Thats the fun that happens when history meets mystery. The stories take on lives of their own! said Garcia, the lantern light guide behind Old Town Temecula Candlelight Walking Tours, the 90-minute walkabouts which begin at dusk on weekends and usually cover six to seven blocks along Front and Main streets in the historical district. A lifelong history buff who was inspired to begin the candlelight tours in Old Town Temecula after visiting a re-enactment of the Gettysburg Civil War battle four year ago, Garcia, 54, really gets into the spirit of the past on his tours. So much so that he dons the dudsright down to his pocket watch, suspenders and spursof a Western U.S. marshall, looking for all the world as if he ambled right through a late-19th-century time portals swinging doors. But that doesnt mean the local history raconteur just sticks to the Temecula of the 1880s. Garcia, who also is a docent with the Temecula Museum and has led thousands of third graders

Nor does the story marshall just stay with the usual Temecula got its name from the Luiseo Indian words meaning land of the white mist history spiel when he gives his night time candlelight tours. Its the odd and quirky bits of the areas past that really intrigue him too. I look for the peculiar history about Temecula, the yellow journalism stuff. Its actual facts, but human interest stories too, said Garcia, who also regularly posts old newspaper clippings about crimes and trials and other human travails on his blog oldtowntemeculatours.wordpress.com/. I think that makes the tours more entertaining and differentthe stories about the local people who lived here as well as some of the more historically known people who passed through this place. Wander along with Garcia on his tours, and you might learn about arcane facts about the witch hysteria in the Temecula Valley in the late 1850s, or how the 1883 volcanic eruption of the Indonesian island of Krakatoa, the most violent explosion in continued on page 40

HORSE HEAVEN
But by the time many horses find the loving attention of Louise Gardner and Monika Kerber and their Temecula-based nonprofit Villa Chardonnay Horses with Wings, the animals are often starving or are just hours away from a Mexican or Canadian slaughterhouse or they have been tied to a fence by a road and abandoned. According to Kerber, owner and president of the horse rescue organization, the troubled economy has wreaked havoc on equines and their owners. Several of the horses here had been abused and neglected or were suffering from injuries, said Kerber, as she made the morning rounds to greet the more than forty horses which currently reside at Villa Chardonnay. But many others have come from owners who have lost their homes and are desperate to find places for their horses. And other owners dont know what to do because they no longer have the money to take care of their horses so they just walk away from their animals. Its truly heartbreaking. It really is. The cost of alfalfa has more than doubled in the last year, said Kerber, adding that exports to China and reduced planting by farmers in favor of corn for ethanol have played a part in the price spike of alfalfa from $9.50 per bale to $19.75 per bale. With a weekly outlay of fifty bales of alfalfa, additional costs for special grains for the older horses, farrier fees, veterinary care and medical supplies, Kerber estimated that it takes $8,000 per week to keep the sanctuary going. Currently both she and Gardner manage to pay for around 97% of the costs of Villa Chardonnay themselves, but finding ways to get more funding is always on their minds, Kerber said, adding that she works in the television marketing industry while Gardner is a lighting manufacturing company executive. A national law banning horse slaughter in the United States was passed in 2006, but no federal funding was set aside for horse rescue organizations so Villa Chardonnay holds fundraisers and other special events to help keep the feed bags full and the continued on page 43

hey come from all over. The polo fields, the race tracks, the wild lands, the cattle ranches, the show grounds and the corrals for family pets.
Thats why Gardner, chief financial officer of Villa Chardonnay, and Kerber stepped forward three years ago to create a home on ten acres for these dispossessed four-legged friends. But giving sanctuary to horses has proven to be a very expensive undertaking.

f youre hosting upcoming holiday parties, you want your home to look its best. If the wood table has watermarks, the dining room chairs are wobbly, or the couchs upholstery is unsightly, consider doing some furniture TLC. Easy, minor touch-ups can make your furniture look like new, and your local Ace Hardware store has the products you need to give your furniture a fresh look. Here are several furniture fix-up suggestions to get your home ready for holiday entertaining:
ice cube wrapped in cloth against it. Then, use a plastic credit card or a dull knife to scrape it off. Rub the wax with an extrafine steel wool dipped in mineral spirits, wipe dry and set with wax or polish.
If a chair is so wobbly that theres an old paperback jammed under the leg for balance, its time for a repair. Knock the loose joint apart with a hammer. Then, with sandpaper or steel wool, remove any old glue from both parts that need to be reattached. If the glue is difficult to take off, try adding vinegar to it. Spread wood glue on both surfaces and then, using a wood clamp or tourniquet, apply pressure on the chair joint for 24 hours allowing the glue ample time to dry. Adding a small screw to the joint will assure a tight hold.
Many furniture fabrics carry an upholstery code, usually found on a label under the cushions, which gives specific instructions on the proper methods for cleaning that fabric type. Typically, vacuuming and light brushing to remove dirt and grime is recommended as well as spot cleaning with an upholstery shampoo or mild solvent. Always patch testing the cleaner on the fabric first to ensure it doesnt shrink or discolor. Its a good idea to treat leather every year or so with a leather oil or conditioner. These products will keep the leather from cracking and remain more pliable to avoid rips and tears.
Visit your Neighborhood Ace Hardware store... Get in. Get help. Get on with your life.
If your chairs spindle is separated from its socket because of playful pets or years of use, you can re-secure it with a little elbow grease. Use a high-speed cutter to thoroughly remove old glue from the rung and inside of the socket. Then coat the end of the spindle and the inside of the socket with carpenters glue, and wrap silk thread around the end of the spindle. Clamp and let settle overnight.
Some common residue can be removed without the help of a professional furniture refinisher. Bear in mind, though, that you should always test your remedy in a small, inconspicuous area first just to be sure it doesnt damage the finish. For watermarks and rings caused by cups without coasters, use a wood amalgamator like Howards Restore-A-Finish or Formbys Conditioning Furniture Refinisher. Use with #0000 steel wool. The more zeros in the code, the finer the weave is. Drench the wool and squeeze out lightly. Apply pressure with the grain, and your woodwork will look like new again. Finish by wiping clean with a tack cloth. Cloths referred to as white ring removers also work to remove marks caused by heat and water and even minor scratches and will not remove finish from the wood surface. If candle wax is the culprit, harden the substance by holding an

uying your first home? Whether you are buying a $99,000 condo or a $300,000 home you will want to do some important things. One of the first decisions you need to make is about location. Location, Location, Location! You will want to research the area in which you would like to live. Take drives through the different neighborhoods that you are considering at different times of day and on the weekends. Everyone is looking for something specific in a neighborhood. For some, its a view or a specific lot size, for others its being close to their childs school or close to work. What is it for you? What size home do you need or want? Are you using this house as a stepping stone to get into the home you really want or is your plan to stay for a while? How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need or will you need? Will you be entertaining friends often? If so, maybe a home with a larger kitchen and a big backyard would be ideal. If you commute and have little time at home, a smaller
yard might be preferable. The next thing you will want to consider is the condition of the property. Do you need a home that is movein ready, or are you looking for something more challenging like a fixer upper? Do you have the skill available to make the repairs, or are you going to need to hire someone? If hiring someone is the case, you will need to make sure you have set aside money to make those repairs. All of these things should be considered before you start your search. What does the home have to have, what would be a deal breaker if it didnt, and what amenities would you like to have but could do without? You will also need to know what your sales price budget is. You will want to sit down with a knowledgeable Loan Officer for a mortgage consultation meeting. At this meeting you will go over your assets and income versus your debt and FICO scores. After this consultation is done, you will better understand what kind of a mortgage payment you would be comfortable with, how property taxes and insurance can affect that amount, and how much money you will need to have for your down payment and closing costs. With this done, you will have the peace of mind that you can comfortably afford a property within a specific range and you are ready to start actively looking at potential homes that will fit your financial situation. And last, but certainly not least, you need to find a great Realtor! You will want to look for an agent who has knowledge of the local area, expertise in negotiating and cares about what you want

THE MOVING PREMIUM?
all marks the end of fun and sun and reminds us that it is time to buckle up and get down to business. If you own your own business, it is also a good time to evaluate your general liability and workers compensation insurance premiums. When doing so, ask your agent if your premium is subject to an audit. Unfortunately, many people pay their initial premium and think they are done, only to receive a shock in the mail when they are faced with an increase of tens of thousands of dollars after the insurance company audits their policy. An auditable policy premium is either based on payroll or gross sales. If your premium is based upon gross sales and your sales skyrocket during the year, you will be faced with an increase in your premium. If it is based on payroll and you hire more staff, you will be faced with an increase in your premium. It is a good idea to have a very detailed discussion with your agent on this issue so you are prepared with the proper records and armed with a thorough understanding of the process when your audit takes place. Once faced with an audit, you can dispute the audit if you are properly prepared to demonstrate that the premium is inaccurate. You will have to provide a written explanation supported with documentation and you should be prepared to estimate what you believe the premium should be. You will also need to be prepared to pay any undisputed portion of the
premium increase. The number of days you have to dispute an audit can vary so be sure to ask your agent or the insurance carrier for the deadline. The following are potential errors in an audit: classification, math, typographical, date, improperly charging for overtime excess wages, not applying credits, using the wrong rates, charging for subcontractors at employee rates, experience rating errors, etc. In some rare instances, you can negotiate a decrease in the audit premium in exchange of purchasing a new policy of insurance from the company for the following year. If, after your review, it appears the stated amount is correct, you will be required to pay the premium increase. However, you may have recourse against the insurance agent if the agent committed negligence. This could have occurred if the agent failed to advise you in writing that your premium was subject to an audit and resultant increase. This is extremely rare and 99.9% of the time some document exists containing a warning. You should review your application, policy indication, and all correspondence to see if you were warned. If you are that rare situation, you should consult with a lawyer.

There are so many decisions to be made in advance of the nuptials how many guests, band or DJ, fish or fowl, what kind of cake, meeting with the photographer, dress fittings and of course hoping against hope that during the halftime show her fianc will remember to call about getting her the ring that hes been promising her. There is also one other oh so important question where to tie the knot? These days the options presented to the happy couple seem endless, or as my mum would have said, youre spoiled for choice! Do you want a theme wedding, a romantic gathering or a traditional church ceremony? No problem. Like SCUBA diving? You can get married underwater. Fond of flying? How about saying, I do in a hot air balloon or the Goodyear blimp? All these options and so many more are open

As a fairly well known DJ Ive been fortunate to perform at weddings around the world in some amazing locations, but some of my favorite have been right here in California. My wife and I chose (actually to come clean here, in the aforementioned typical guy fashion I let her choose) to do our own 10-year vow renewal in a vineyard in Temecula and then moved the reception inside to the barrel room for dinner and dancing. My wife had researched many different places to do the ceremony but one look at the barrel room at Wiens and she was hooked. That was the place for her! Thats the kind of emotional response that you want for your special day, after all you (hopefully) only do it once so you want every aspect to be right. And that includes the staff at the venue. Sometimes youll think youve found a great place, the dcor is perfect, the vibe just right, but the person or people who run it have an attitude. Take my advice, run quickly. You have to work with them for the next few months and you dont want your wedding day soured by uncooperative staff. At Wiens, my wife and I were very fortunate because everyone there was so helpful, often thinking of answers to questions before they were even asked (thanks Jamie!). It made the day everything we wanted. But its not just wineries that make great venues for weddings in California, ever thought about getting married in an
t might seem strange to talk about weddings just as the nights are drawing in and were trying to remember how to reset the timers for our outside lights, but its now that most brides are finalizing their plans for their dream day next spring or summer. Notice I say brides because the majority of grooms have that all-to-prevelant guy attitude hey, the weddings next year, well get to it in a few months. Footballs just starting. However the fairer sex knows better and while her fianc is cheering as his favorite quarterback dodges the linebackers and races for a touchdown, she is on the phone planning her own plays with her wedding planner.

Aquarium? No, not wading around in Uncle Rons thirty-gallon tank, but at a real Aquarium. Last year I DJd a wonderful reception at the Long Beach Aquarium surrounded not only by two hundred dancing guests but also by schooling fish who were really digging on the new Lady GaGa track. The head table had the most awesome backdrop a forty-foot high glass display enclosing the undersea life of the Pacific. As the bride and groom made their thank you speech two sand sharks swam above their heads. It was beautiful. The only concession I had to make was to turn off my DJ lights at 10pm because thats when the fish went to sleep (I guess our slippery friends arent party animals) but the music stayed pumping until midnight and the guests went crazy when I played the brides number one request Rock Lobster. Another unique venue was an automotive museum. The groom loved classic cars and his loving bride decided to indulge his passion and booked the Marconi Automotive Museum. I set up my gear between a $600,000 Aston Martin and a 2 million dollar Italian street rocket in fact that day I had to double the liability insurance I always carry and the groom drove into the museum in a 1967 red Ferrari. The crowd danced all night ringed by Lamborghinis and Bugattis. So much fun! That was the night when people didnt worry about mp3s they were more concerned with the mpg! One other very popular and memorable place to get married is on a boat. Were right next to the worlds biggest body of water, the Pacific ocean, and despite what happened to everyones little buddy, Gilligan, a lot of couples choose to tie the knot at sea. But heres a little word of advice, as fun as it might sound try to keep your voyage inside a harbor. Once your push out into the waves you might find some of your guests quickly regretting having that second piece of cake. Perfect places for an almost guaranteed calm cruise include Balboa Island and Long Beach Harbor. So as you start to finalize your plans for your wedding and once again Im talking to the brides here because I know the football games still on remember that its your day and you can be as creative with it as your imagination and budget will allow. And you really dont have to spend a lot (I was about to say go overboard but after talking about boats I figured that was inappropriate) if you do some of the legwork. My wife saved us a lot by working with Jamie at Wiens and doing many of the decorations herself. And when we look back on our own special day we have nothing but great memories of the sun setting over Temecula as we stood among the vines with family and friends on that warm summer evening before dancing the night away. I can only hope your wedding is as perfect for you.

recorded history, put an end to Temeculas railroad boomtown times eight thousand miles away. Additionally, Garcia enjoys recounting local lore such as that the Temecula blacksmith who was thought for years to be the last man in California to be executed by hanging, or how the bank robber of the Temecula First National Bank in 1930 grabbed $1,200 from the teller, but completely missed a nearby table stacked with the Vail Ranch payroll of $30,000 in cash! And, he said, people always want to know if there are haunted buildings in Temecula. Everybody loves ghost stories. People do ask me all the time if certain buildings are haunted, especially when were doing the candlelight tours, said Garcia, whose tours begin at the historic 1920s-era Palomar Inn Hotel which has been long rumored to be haunted. But I just them the stories I know and the facts I know, and I let them figure it out. Garcia can take as many as twenty people on his candlelight tours, but most of the time he guides groups of four to eight people through the historical district. And what he likes the best, he said, is when someone on his tours has a local story or too that Garcia hasnt yet unearthed because it keeps the tours fresh and unscripted. After the tours, people tell me that they are really surprised to learn about how much history there is here, said Garcia. And whats better is that Im always learning something new too, and that way I can keep doing what I love to dohelp Temeculas past really come to life again.
Garcias tours begin in the lobby of the Palomar Inn Hotel at 28522 Old Town Front St. on weekend evenings at dusk. They cost $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and military, $4 for kids ages 5 to 10. veterinarians on call. Their biggest money raiser of the year, the annual Help Abandoned and Abused Horses event was held last month, and another upcoming fundraiser is slated for November 12, featuring renowned equine artist Ashley Collins. Tax deductible individual donations and monthly sponsorships are also helping somewhat, said Kerber, but there is always a need for more assistance as alfalfa costs alone are expected to increase further. These are all my babies, she said, a cheerfully elegant sweep of her hand covering the scene of horses in the stables and corrals on Villa Chardonnay. They are so sweet, and they really respond to all the love and care they get here. And they all have such different personalities! Not only do the horses at Villa Chardonnay have different personalities, they have different stories too. The rescue operations website www.villachardonnay.org has a touching section about equine residents there including the wild mustangs that were orphaned during the Bureau of Land Managements round ups, a gentle giant of a draft horse, and a 25-year-old palomino gelding that was rescued after its elderly owner passed away and the children didnt want the horse.
Villa Chardonnay Horses with Wings was named for Kerbers and Gardners first rescue horse in Southern California four years ago. You could say it was kind of an internet romance because the two horse lovers spotted a website featuring young palomino that was scheduled to to go slaughter because she had a bad foot and likely would never be ridden. Kerber and Gardner picked up the horse that night, named her Chardonnay because her color was similar that of the wine, and nursed her back to healthy walking. But horses arent the only four-legged critters at Villa Chardonnay. There are 12 cats and six dogs (the canines were rescued from China and Mexico City), three goats, and one magisterial two-legged tom turkey named Eric. An older woman asked if we could take the three goats, and I thought about it for two seconds, and then I said yes, said Kerber, looking fondly at a big goat by the name of Junior as he was trying to eat this writers notes. But then at the last minute she also asked if we would take a turkey, and I said Oh, of course! What else could I do? Its all about loving and saving the animals here at Villa Chardonnay!

ven though the weather is cooling down, the music scene is getting ready to heat up! October 29 at Quaid HarleyDavidson in Old Town Temecula will bring the 3rd annual Help Ride motorcycle and music festival. Featuring a poker run, vendor area, beer garden, wine bar, bike show and awesome tunes from 9am -5:30pm, this event has seen unparalleled growth since its inception, and is now sponsored by the City of Temecula. This year artists include Gilby Clarke of Guns N Roses fame, Bobby Blotzer from Ratt and Erik Turner from Warrant all playing together on the same stage. Also performing will be Adlers Appetite featuring Steven Adler also from Guns N Roses, Creedence Relived - a CCR tribute band - and local classic rock band, Old School. Proceeds from this event benefit two local nonprofits - the Black Sheep and All From the Heart. The Black Sheep are an international Christian motorcycle club founded in Temecula that are committed to performing good deeds in their community. All From the Hearts primary focus is to support local U.S. Military families in need, in many different ways. Support Our Troops is an annual holiday event that honors 25 military families. Their Wheels for Warriors project provides power wheelchairs to veterans injured in combat. Both of these organizations are well worth supporting.
Gilby Clarke has been involved in the Help Ride since it began, and is excited to participate in 2011, once again hosting the event as MC. Gilby says that performing their music at Help Ride is the one thing, as musicians, that we can do to help out. Hes looking forward to being on stage with other icons, also his friends, jamming for the festival. This will be Bobby Blotzers first time at Help Ride - and he couldnt be more jazzed to be a part of this inspiring community event. For local wine fans, youll also be interested to know that Bobby has his own line of wines, created in tandem with Kristian Story out of Napa Valley. Body Talk Chardonnay was released on September 1, and Slip of the Lip, a Cabernet blend, will be available December 1. Already picked up by Hard Rock and Rolling Stone cafes, this was an opportunity for Bobby to meld his love of great wine with his love of rock n roll. Erik Turner also has his own wine label, Warrant Red. These and more are available at artistwine.com Even if you dont ride, you will want to come on down to Quaid Harley-Davidson on October 29. Concert-only tickets are available, and this also gives you entry into the vendor area. The Help Ride is certain to be a great day, for a great cause.
