Steve Jobs, Apple's legendary co-founder, has died at age 56, succumbing to his longtime bout with cancer of the pancreas. Jobs is survived by his four children, three of whom are from his wife Lauren. The story of Steve Jobs is truly legendary. Hollywood would be hard pressed to come up with something more dramatic. The son of parents who adopted him, he pushed himself to greatness, working tirelessly up until his last breath to, as he famously said, "change the world one person at a time." The world has lost not only one of the greatest business leaders and entrepreneurs of all time, it has lost something far greater - a visionary and technical genius whose contributions to today's life cannot be overstated. Without Steve Jobs, there would not have been the personal computer revolution which we take for granted today. Apple ignited it with their invention of the original Apple I computer in the 1970s, the brainchild of "the two Steves," both Steve Jobs and his best friend engineer, Steve Wozniak. The two created Apple. Without Jobs, there would not be the Macintosh computer, the mouse, or point and click operating systems. Microsoft's Windows software is a copy of the interface Apple rst invented in 1984 when it released the Mac. Without Jobs there would be no iTunes, which is the worlds leading and largest online music store. It now contains 20 million songs. 16 billions titles have been downloaded since iTunes was launched ten years ago.

Without Jobs there would not be the iPod Touch which is the worlds most popular mobile gaming platform, outselling XBox, Sony and Nintendo combined. To date, Apple has sold over 300 million iPods, and has a 78% market share. Without Jobs there would not be the iPhone which is the worlds bestselling smart phone. Apple has become in the last four years the worlds largest mobile company. It even passed Microsoft and HP to become the largest and most protable computing rm in the world. Apple stock is valued at 11 times greater than Microsofts. Without Jobs there would be no iPad, which has no serious viable competitor. To date, Apple has sold nearly 30 million of the devices and cannot make them fast enough. In this new scal year they will sell some 60 million units. Three out of four tablet PCs sold worldwide are iPads. Without Jobs Apple would not be what it has become over the last ten years, ever since it launched the original iMac after he returned to the company. Apple is now the world's most valuable company, it passed oil giant Exxon-Mobil months ago. Without Steve Jobs there would not be Pixar, which has won countless Academy Awards for their groundbreaking computer animated hit lms such as Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Cars, The Incredibles, and Monsters. Jobs sold Pixar to Walt Disney and became Disneys largest stock holder. Jobs was declared to be CEO of the Decade by Fortune magazine and Person of the Year 2010 by the Financial Times. Jobs challenged people to "Think Different," and he certainly did. This slogan became Apple's rallying cry. He pushed the human race forward. Steve Jobs was not only a visionary, he was pure genius. He often saw things years before the rest of the industry did. More importantly, he often dened the industry, leaving his rivals often scrambling to compete for second place. Jobs has more than 300 patents with his name on them. Jobs once told a graduating class at Stanford University in 2005, Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool Ive ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything, all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure; these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to

avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. Your time is limited, so dont waste it living someone elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Dont let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. Perhaps Jobs greatest achievement is one which has gone largely unnoticed by the media. He has left in place a top management team to succeed him, one which has been effectively running Apple during the past 18 months. Keenly aware of his mortality and ever the perfectionist, Jobs has insured that his improbable and historic legacy will live on for the foreseeable future. 1.0v1 Oct 6, 2011 Kal K.
