Teachers manual Title: Density and buoyancy of object Aim : to study the connection between the volume and

the mass and the buoyancy of materials Hypothesis : A denser matter will sink in the less dense liquid Variable : Constant : the volume of matter Manipulated : type of matter Responds : the rate of density Materials: wooden block, iron block, cork, water, oil Apparatus : measuring cylinder, beaker, compression balance Procedure : 1. The mass of wooden block, iron block, cork, and oil of the same dimension are measured 2. The matter are put into a beaker filled with 500 cm of water 3. The buoyancy of the matter in water is observed 4. The densities of materials are calculate and recorded Observation :

Material Wooden block State of matter Volume (cm) Mass (g) Density (g/cm) Observation (float or sink in water) Discussion and analysis:

Iron block

Cork

Oil

1. Define density and write down its formula Mass per unit volume, Density= mass/ volume

2. State the SI unit for density Kg/m or g/cm

3. Why does the substance float on water? Substance floats on water because it is less dense than water

4. Why does substance sink in water? 5. Substance sink in water because it is denser than water a) Calculate the density of the ice(mass = 92g, volume= 100cm) Density = mass Volume = 92g 100cm = 0.92g/cm b) Does ice float on water? Yes

c) Give your reason for 5b Ice less dense than water

Substance Mercury Petrol Sand Water Cork

Density 13.6 0.75 2.6 1.0 0.25

6. Using the result and table, predict the position of sand and mercury if all substance were put together in gas jar. Sand will float on mercury

7. draw a suitable diagram and label

Conclusion: Matter of higher densities will sink in liquid of lower densities. Hypothesis accepted/rejected
