Espaol 102 Instructor: Michael Guzmn Ensayo 1: Cartas formales e informales

Using the conventions explained in the In-class Writing Workshop Guide handout, you will be writing two letters: A. The first letter will be addressed to a friend. The letter should contain at least each of the following:

An introduction, which should not only include a greeting to establish some rapport with the addressee, but could include general questions like Cmo ests?, Cmo te sientes?, in addition to giving the reader information about how you, the person writing the letter, are at the present time (ie. Whereabouts are you these days? What are you doing as of late?) A main body, specifically regarding your friends upcoming vacation to Mexico. : Where are they going in Mexico? What are they going to do there? Who are they going with? You could also add something about your personal knowledge of a place (ie. If your friend is thinking about someplace to go in Mexico, you could make a suggestion based on your personal experience: Si vas a viajar a Guadalajara, tienes que visitar el Parque Morelos porque es hermoso.)

A closing, appropriate for the relationship you have with the addressee (which should be clearly established at some point in the letter).

Note: This informal letter will draw vocabulary primarily from Chapter 4 in the textbook. B. The second letter will be addressed to a travel agent. This letter should contain at least each of the following:

An introduction, which should not only include a greeting to establish some rapport with the addressee, but should clearly state the purpose of the letter. In this case, you are planning a trip to Mexico and you have many questions about your itinerary on which you want the travel agent to advise you. A main body, specifically addressing questions and/or comment you might have for your travel agent, such as: What is the weather like in (insert city)? When is the best time to travel? My preferences are, my favorite activities are, I plan on traveling with, etc. A closing, appropriate for the relationship you have with the addressee (which should be clearly established at some point in the letter).

Note: This informal letter will draw vocabulary primarily from Chapter 4 in the textbook.

These letters should be concise, between 150-200 words each. The letters should be typed and double-spaced so that I may have space to write in comments and corrections. Please submit on Wednesday, October 12th: 1) a paper copy in class 2) an electronic copy at mguzman@westfield.ma.edu This is a FIRST DRAFT of the letters. You will be turning in a FINAL DRAFT at a later date. You are encouraged to use your textbook, dictionaries, and other useful resources to complete this assignment.
