Welcome to Madrid: Estimado Sr. Pryde, aunque mucha gente conoce British Council, nos podra dar unas lneas esenciales de su actividad?. Cmo director cual es su principal funcin? Welcome to Madrid: Mr Pryde though many people know the British Council, can you explain to us what you actually do? And as director what are your main tasks? Roderick Pryde: Es el organismo pblico del Reino Unido destinado a la promocin de la educacin y cultura britnica y est reconocido en todo el mundo como una de las instituciones lderes en la enseanza de ingls. Contamos con 13 centros en toda Espaa en los que hemos depositado nuestros conocimientos y experiencia al servicio del aprendizaje y la enseanza de ingls desde 1940. Como director de un equipo de unas 900 personas en Espaa, mi principal funcin es ser conocido en Espaa, conocer a la gente y las instituciones importantes; dirigir, dar protagonismo y crear un espacio que permita a mi excelente equipo hacer su trabajo. Roderick Pryde: It is a public body from the United Kingdom which exists to promote British education and culture all over the world and it is recognized as one of the leaders in English teaching.We have 13 centres all over Spain in which we have deposited our knowledge and experience in the service of learning and teaching English since 1940. As Director and leader of a team of some 900 people in Spain I see my main responsibilities as being visible in Spain, knowing the right people and institutions, setting direction, giving clear leadership, and creating the space to allow a great team to get on with doing their jobs. WM: You are a non- prot making organisation in Britain and in Spain the Delegation in Spain of the British Council, so can you tell us what your income is used for? RP: Espaa y Gran Bretaa son importantes socios, la gente en Espaa le gusta mucho el Reino. Unido, en especial: la cultura, la educacin y el arte. La demanda del ingls en todo el pas es my alta, del ingls como idioma, sus ttulos y los estudios en el Reino Unido. Por todo esto nosotros trabajamos con nuestros socios por toda Espaa, especialmente en la lengua inglesa, el arte y la educacin para ofrecer servicios muy extensos de alta calidad y programas que ofrecen oportunidades a los jvenes espaoles ayudando a construir puentes y entendimiento entre los dos pases. RP: Spain and the UK are important partners, and people in Spain are well-disposed towards the UK with signicant appetite for British culture, education, and the arts. Across the country demand for English language, UK qualications and UK study is high. We therefore work closely with partners across Spain, particularly in English language, the arts, and education, to offer on as broad as scale as possible high-quality services and programmes which offer opportunities to young Spaniards, and which help to build relationships and understanding between our two countries. WM: You teach children from 3 years old and this is a huge responsibility, can you tell me what makes you

most proud as an organization? RP: Estoy encantado de ver que, gracias a los esfuerzos de todos los que han trabajado con nosotros y para nosotros durante mas de 70 aos, la gente nos ve como una organizacin de conanza que hace un buen trabajo, establece los niveles en varias reas y entiende lo que quiere y necesita la gente en Espaa. Aunque llevamos muchos aos trabajando en las mismas reas y con muchas de las instituciones clave, durante todo este tiempo, siempre hablamos con la gente sobre sus necesidades y sus expectativas y estamos constantemente actualizando todo lo que ofrecemos. RP: Im delighted to see that, thanks to the efforts of everyone who has been working with us and for us for over 70 years, we are seen as an organisation which is trusted to do a good job, to set standards in some areas, and to be tuned in to what people in Spain want and need. While have largely worked in the same key areas and with many of the same key institutions for all of this time, we are continuously talking to people about their needs and expectations, and then innovating and ne-tuning what we offer to meet these. WM: Que valoracin hara de la ciudad de Madrid como positivo y que encuentra como negativo o como necesario de mejorarse. Y del mismo modo como ve a sus ciudadanos. WM: What positive and negative aspects do you see in Madrid and how could it be improved? And in the same vein how do you view the citizens of Madrid?
RP: He tenido la suerte de vivir en varias de las grandes ciudades del mundo desde Kyoto a Dehli, y he disfrutado de vivir en cada una de ellas. Madrid para mi es un sitio estupendo para vivir, No demasiado grande y el centro es muy elegante, es muy cmodo en todos los aspectos, ofrece una cultura fabulosa durante todo el ao, la comida es estupenda, el transporte publico esta entre los mejores del mundo, el clima es excelente y el acceso a los lugares histricos y al campo est a unos pasos. Tengo unas pequeas quejas. A pesar de las mejoras recientes, no es fcil y es peligroso ir en bici. Los conductores no ven a los ciclistas especialmente cuando estn llamando por telfono en lo mismo momento. Y no siempre es un placer escuchar a los llamados msicos (gente que espera recibir propina) en el Metro. Me gustan los madrileos y son acogedores y amables. La gente quien yo conozco a travs del trabajo no se dan importancia y te tratan como persona. Me encanta cuando estoy charlando con alguien de una manera muy relajada en una recepcin y solo luego descubres que en realidad era alguien muy importante. Es un pequeo reto a veces ser extranjero durante poco tiempo en Madrid, aunque hables bien el espaol, tu no formas parte de la red cerrada de familias y amigos ni tampoco de la red de extranjeros que llevan ms tiempo que tu aqu establecidos. RP: Ive been lucky enough to live in a number of the great cities of the world, from Kyoto to New Delhi,

and to love living in every one. Madrid for me is a great place to live in. Its not too big, the centre is elegant, its extremely liveable in every way, there is a fantastic cultural offer throughout the year, the food is great, public transport is world-class, the climate is excellent, and access to great historical centres and countryside is just a step away. Ive got some minor niggles. Despite recent improvements, its not an easy or safe city to cycle around. Drivers seem simply not to see you, especially when theyre on the phone at the same time! And the buskers on the Metro (people who play music and expect to be paid) are not always a pleasure to listen to! I like Madridlenos, and nd them welcoming, and friendly. People I meet through work are not at all self-important, and talk to you as a person. I love it when Im chatting to people in a very relaxed way to people at a reception and only later nd out that are I fact terribly important! Its sometimes challenging in a very minor way, to be a short-term foreigner in Madrid, even if you speak reasonable Spanish, because youre not really part of the strong family and friends networks which people have, nor of the more established foreigner network. name 3 places in Madrid which are of particular interest for tourists, what would be your choice? RP: A parte de lugares como El Prado y Reina Soa yo tengo 3 sitios preferidos y siempre los recomiendo a visitantes. El Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales . Para mi es como ir de paseo al siglo 16 El Museo de Sorolla en el P Martnez Campos. Es una joya no solamente por los magncos cuadros, sino tambin la esencia que transmite la casa, permitindote entrar en la vida de Sorolla. La Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes, con sus magncos frescos en el techo. RP: Apart from the wonderful obvious places like the Prado and the Reina Soa, I have three personal favourites which I always recommend to visitors : The Descalzas Reales Monastery. For me going there is like walking into the 16th century. The Museo Sorolla in Paseo Martinez Campos. This is a jewel as much for the great paintings as for the house and the sense that you really get an insight into Sorollas life. The church of San Antonio de los Alemanes, whose frescoed ceiling is magnicent. Presentacin
Uno de los tradicionales elementos distintivos de la Villa de Madrid ha sido el nmero y calidad de sus fuentes. Sin embargo, tamao patrimonio no ha sido exclusivo de la capital; la Regin puede enorgullecerse de un variado repertorio de fuentes histricas, ya sea con un propsito funcional, sea con el meramente ornamental y decorativo. Y semejante patrimonio se extiende por todos los rincones de la Comunidad Autnoma, desde los Reales Sitios a los Municipios ms recoletos, en la Sierra o en la Campia. Como es natural, la necesidad de llegar agua a los ncleos urbanos desarroll el ingenio de los madrileos a lo largo de los siglos y el resultado es la gran cantidad de fuentes que -todava en uso- jalonan las plazas y calles de nuestros Municipios. Esta Gua de Fuentes Histricas, que ahora se presenta, incluye 24 piezas que reproducen la mayora de usos y morfologas posibles y acerca al visitante a distintos ejemplos de soluciones tcnicas que combinaron la utilidad con la belleza, a veces casi insuperable. One of the distinguishing elements of the city of Madrid has traditionally been its fountains, abundant in both quantity and quality. However, this signicant heritage is not exclusive to the capital. The region itself can also take pride in a varied range of historic fountains, whether their purpose is functional or merely ornamental and decorative. This heritage is distributed throughout the Autonomous Community, from Royal Sites to the most out-of-the way towns and villages in the mountains and the countryside. DIRECCIN Parque del Retiro (Plaza de la Repblica de Honduras). ____________________________________________ Esta fuente fue construida en 1781-1782, con diseo de Ventura Rodrguez, como parte de las obras de ordenacin del Paseo del Prado. La ejecucin escultrica fue obra de Alfonso Giraldo Bergaz, Antonio Pino y Jos Rodrguez. Pese a la formacin neoclsica de Ventura Rodrguez, esta fuente presenta elementos de clara inuencia barroca. Realizada en piedra caliza, est compuesta por una columna central que lleva blasn con las armas de Madrid. stas son sostenidas por una nereida ninfa con cuerpo de mujer y cola de pez y un tritn. La columna, sostiene una taza poco profunda en cuyo centro se encuentran cuatro amorcillos agrupados bajo una alcachofa en la que se sita el surtidor superior de la fuente, realizado en este caso en granito. Este conjunto escultrico se encuentra arropado por un parapeto, que presenta relieves en forma de cascada. El vaso inferior comprende piln circular. ADDRESS The Plaza of the Repblica de Honduras situated in the Retiro Park. ___________________________________________ This fountain was built in 1781-1782, as part of the public works that were effected to adorn the Paseo del Prado. It was designed by Ventura Rodrguez. The sculptural decorative work was carried out by Alfonso Giraldo Bergaz, Antonio Pino and Jos Rodrguez. Despite Ventura Rodrguezs neo classical formation, this fountain shows some distinctive Baroque traits. The fountain is chiseled out of granite and white stone lime stone, consisting of a central column which bears the coat-of-arms of Madrid. These are held by a Nereid or Nymph with a womans body and a shs tail and a Triton. The column holds a shallow basin at the centre of which are four children around an artichoke. From the top layer, the water of the fountain ows. This sculptural work is surrounded by a cover parapet, which has motifs and designs in the form of a waterfall. The lower platter has a circular font which holds the sculptural centerpiece.

En 1880 la fuente se traslad a su emplazamiento actual en el Parque del Retiro, junto al ngulo sudoeste del Estanque Grande, en uno de los lugares ms simblicos de este parque madrileo. Existe una rplica en la Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, conocida popularmente como Glorieta de Atocha, promovida por el alcalde Enrique Tierno Galvn, dentro del plan de remodelacin urbanstica de este recinto, consistente en el derribo de varios pasos elevados y la recuperacin de algunos de los elementos ornamentales diseados en el siglo XVIII en el proyecto del Saln del Prado. Fruto de esta iniciativa fue la construccin de una reproduccin en bronce de la Fuente de la Alcachofa, que, desde el ao 1987, ocupa la parte central de la citada plaza, en recuerdo de su emplazamiento primitivo. Al margen de los materiales empleados, el nico rasgo diferencial de la rplica con respecto a la estructura original es la base sobre la que aquella se asienta. Se trata de una plataforma circular, en cuyo interior se integra una supercie cuadrada cuarteada y cuatro estanques a cada lado, que permiten completar la circunferencia. Cada uno de stos se alimenta de las aguas arrojadas por un conjunto escultrico de cuatro surtidores, con forma de alcachofa, que se disponen cuadrangularmente.
In 1880 the fountain was moved to its current position in the Retiro Park, beside the southeast corner of the Lake, which is one of the most symbolic places in the Park.. There is a replica of the monument in the Roundabout of Emperor Carlos V, better known as the Glorieta de Atocha. This was carried out by the Major Enrique Tierno Galvn, as part of a urban renovation of this area. This consisted in removing various risen trafc bridges which crossed the square at various angles. Then the recuperation of some of the original ornamental designs of the 18th century was put in place. Part of this recuperation was the reproduction of the Artichoke Fountain which from 1987 stands in the central part of the Square in remembrance of the rst fountain. Leaving aside the material used, the only different between the original and the replica is the base on which it is placed. replica is located on a huge circular platform, the interior of which is a tiled-like square table with four ponds on the angle completing the circle. Each of these are nourished by the water which falls from the central piece where four spouts in the shape of artichokes are also placed to form a quadrangle.

2. Fuente del ngel Cado Fountain of the Fallen Angel

DIRECCIN Jardines del Buen Retiro de la Villa de Madrid (Glorieta del ngel Cado). ____________________________________________ Esta fuente fue realizada en 1880 empleando como elemento principal el vaciado en bronce de la escultura de yeso que en 1877 ejecutase, en su tercer ao de pensionado de la Real Academia Espaola de Bellas Artes de Roma, el escultor madrileo Ricardo Bellver. El conjunto tiene unas dimensiones aproximadas de 10 metros de largo, 10 de ancho y 7 de alto. La escultura de Bellver mide 2,65 metros de alto. El extenso piln sobre el que cae el agua es de granito y tiene forma ochavada. En el centro, se alza el pedestal. Su base de granito, tiene forma de pirmide truncada, de planta octogonal, y en cada uno de sus lados gura una cartula de bronce. Estas cartulas representan a diablos que sujetan con sus manos lagartos, sierpes y delnes, y en cada una de ellas hay tres surtidores de los que mana el agua. Sobre dicha base se sitan otros dos cuerpos, pero con menor inclinacin. Y a continuacin un tercer cuerpo, compuesto por tres escalones de planta circular, sobre ADDRESS Gardens of the Buen Retiro, Roundabout of the Fallen Angel. ___________________________________________ This fountain was constructed in 1880. The original 1877 plaster cast was used as a model to recreate the new work in bronze. The gure is a creation of young Ricardo Bellver, while he was in his third year as pensioner in The Spanish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The fountains dimensions are roughly 10 metres long, 10 metres wide and 7 metres high. Bellvers sculpture measures 2,65 metres in height. The fountain is surrounded by a circular ower bed railing. The huge font on which the water falls is made of granite. Built on a circular stand, it rises on a granite pedestal, shaped like a truncated pyramid whose lower base has eight facets where bronze evil masks are displayed. These faces represent devils holding in their hands lizards, snakes and dolphins. The water ows from three spouts protruding out of each of these gures. Standing on this base are two more slightly straighter pyramid-like sections which support a third section

el que descansa la escultura principal que remata el monumento. El ngel Cado, con las alas desplegadas y contorsionado, se apoya sobre unas rocas, mientras una gran serpiente se enrosca alrededor de su cuerpo. Esta obra de Bellver muestra tres grandes inuencias: la helenstica, especialmente de Laocoonte y sus hijos; la barroca (sobre todo de Bernini), y la romntica, por su sentimiento e intensidad dramtica. La escultura est inspirada en unos versos de El paraso perdido, de John Milton. La obra fue adquirida por el Estado por 4.500 pesetas, segn la tasacin previamente efectuada por el Jurado de la Exposicin, y se decidi enviarla a Pars, con motivo de la Exposicin Universal de 1878. Dado que en ella slo se admitan esculturas de mrmol o bronce, se iniciaron los trmites para realizar la fundicin en dicho metal. Bellver sugiri hacerla en Roma, pero nalmente se llev a cabo en Pars, por la casa Thiebaut-Fils. La escultura se cedi al Ayuntamiento de Madrid para su instalacin en un lugar pblico de la capital. El sitio elegido fue un espacio libre en los Jardines del Buen Retiro, ocupado anteriormente por la antigua Fbrica de Porcelanas de la China. La Glorieta del ngel Cado, al igual que otros muchos lugares de la capital espaola se encuentra a una altitud topogrca ocial de 666 metros sobre el nivel del mar en Alicante. Esto, unido a la existencia de una falsa creencia popular moderna segn la cual el monumento es una suerte de homenaje a Lucifer, al mal, o a lo hertico, ha despertado la imaginacin de muchos acionados al esoterismo. No obstante, en la poca en que se erigi la fuente, los instrumentos de medicin no tenan la suciente precisin como para conocer esta cota con tanta exactitud, por lo que se trata de una mera casualidad, llamativa en todo caso. Desde los aos noventa se halla expuesta, en la sede de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Madrid), una rplica de El ngel Cado realizada en resina de polister sobre molde de silicona.
where the sculpture stands.The top section is much shorter and ascends through three circular steps to the main gure of the monument. The Fallen Angel his wings spread out and twisted, rests on the rocks with a serpent wrapped around his body. The work of Bellver is here inuenced by three tendencies. The Hellenistic inuence through the famous group of Laocoonte and his children. The Baroque with Berninis inuence indicated by Bellvers use of diagonal lines in search of expressivity. The Romantic aspect is conveyed through the strong sense of the drama of the fountain. The sculpture was inspired by John Miltons Paradise Lost. The monument was bought by the Spanish State for 4,500 pesetas, which was the price set by the Exhibition Jury. It was sent to Paris for the Universal Exhibition of 1878. As only sculptures of marble or bronze were admitted to the Exhibition, it was decided to have it cast in bronze. Bellver suggested it should be done in Rome. However, the work was carried out in Paris, in the house of Thiebaut~Fils. Later the sculpture was presented to the Town Council of Madrid so that it could be exhibited in the capital. The location chosen was the Retiro Park, in the spot where once the old Factory of Porcelain China stood. The Roundabout of the Fallen Angel is 666 metres above the sea level at Alicante. This fact, added to the modern false belief that the monument is dedicated to Lucifer- The Fallen Angel, to the evil side of nature, to heresy, has given rise to a lot of speculation by followers of certain esoteric cults. However, at the time when the fountain was erected, it seems the instruments to measure sea levels were not very precise, so the matter stays within the limits of a remarkable coincidence. Since the 90s there is a polyester resin replica modelled on a silicon mould of The Fallen Angel at the Museum of The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Madrid.

DIRECCIN Plaza de Cnovas del Castillo, s/n. __________________________________________ La Fuente de Neptuno de Madrid fue diseada por Ventura Rodrguez en el ao 1782, y ejecutada entre 1780 y 1784 por Juan Pascual de Mena, quien la esculpi toda ella en mrmol blanco procedente de Montesclaros (Toledo), como parte de las obras de ordenacin del Saln del Prado.

The god Neptune is at the centre, represented by a snake around his right hand and a trident in his left, in a seashell-shaped chariot pulled by two sea horses. The chariot is surrounded by seals and dolphins who spout water high up in the air. The god of the waters would allude to the Navy which Charles III reformed to make it more competitive and to narrow the gap with the colonies.

DIRECCIN Plaza de la Cibeles, s/n. ____________________________________________ Esta fuente, una de las ms insignes de Madrid y a fuerza de popular, icono de la ciudad, fue trazada durante el reinado de Carlos III como parte de las obras de ordenacin del Paseo del Prado. Este proyecto, iniciado por Jos de Hermosilla bajo la supervisin del Conde de Aranda, se basaba en crear un espacio circoagonal limitado en los extremos por dos fuentes dedicadas a los dioses mitolgicos Cibeles y Neptuno. En el centro, se situara adems una fuente dedicada a Apolo. It was built during the reign of Charles III, as part of public works carried out on the Paseo del Prado. The project, began by Jos de Hermosilla, under the supervision of the Count of Aranda, was based on creating a classical circus-shaped space with fountains at the angles. Fuente de Cibeles
Ala muerte de Hermosilla en 1775, Ventura Rodrguez se hizo cargo de las obras, y l mismo se encarg del diseo de las fuentes, incluida la Cibeles, cuyo proyecto y presupuesto fue presentado en marzo de 1776. Las obras comenzaron en 1780, encargndose de su realizacin los escultores Francisco Gutirrez y Roberto Michel principal escultor del conjunto de los leones que tiran del carro divino. La ornamentacin general fue realizada por el escultor Miguel Ximnez. Esculpida en mrmol toledano de Montesclaros, consiste en un gran vaso inferior circular sobre el que se sitan unas rocas que hacen de soporte al carro de la diosa, el cual est tirado por dos leones. Sentada en el carro aparece la diosa Cibeles, de trazas clsicas, vestida con un no manto. En la mano derecha sostiene un cetro, smbolo del poder universal, mientras que con la izquierda muestra las llaves de la ciudad. Por encargo de Juan de Villanueva, Alfonso Giraldo Bergaz complet la ornamentacin de la fuente con las guras de un dragn y un oso, de cuya cabeza salan dos surtidores de agua potable, y que fueron retirados a mediados del siglo XIX. Las obras nalizaron en 1792, situndose en un principio a la entrada del Paseo de Recoletos, mirando hacia Neptuno. All estuvo Cibeles hasta que en 1895, con motivo de la ordenacin de la glorieta de Emilio Castelar, fue trasladada a su emplazamiento actual.
On the death of Hermosilla in1775, Ventura Rodriguez took charge of the works and the design of the fountains, including Cybele, whose project and funding was presented in March 1776. The works started in 1780, with Francisco Gutirrez and Roberto Michel Michel was the person who worked on the lions pulling the chariot. The ornamental work was mostly carried out by Miguel Ximnez. Carved in marble from Montesclaros in Toledo, it is composed of a great lower circular rim where there are rocks supporting the chariot of the goddess pulled by lions. Seated in the chariot is the goddess, of classical beauty, dressed in a ne robe. In her right hand she holds a sceptre, symbol of universal power, while in her left hand she shows the keys of the city. On an order from Juan de Villanueva, Alfonso Giraldo Bergaz completed the decorations of the fountain with the gures of a dragon and a bear. From their mouths a strong jet of water spouted. These were taken away in the middle of the 19th century. The works were nished in1792, when the group was situated at the entrance of the Paseo de Recoletos, looking towards Neptune. Cybele was there until 1895. However, because of public works on the Emilio Castelar Roundabout, Cybele had to be moved to its present location.

5. Fuente de Apolo Fountain of Apollo

DIRECCIN Paseo del Prado, s/n. ___________________________________________ La Fuente de Apolo se empez a construir durante el reinado de Carlos III como parte de las obras de ordenacin del Saln del Prado, aunque no fue hasta el reinado de Carlos IV cuando se dio por terminada. Igual que Cibeles y Neptuno, el diseo se debe a Ventura Rodrguez, si bien la realizacin nal fue de Manuel lvarez y posteriormente de Alfonso Bergaz, quien concluy la obra en 1803. La fuente se compone de un cuerpo central con escalinata, tarjetones en los cuatro frentes y en sus costados con dos mascarones que arrojan agua sobre tres conchas superpuestas de diferentes dimensiones. La cornisa descansa sobre cuatro estribos decorados con cuatro estatuas que representan las Estaciones del ao. Finalmente, sobre stas, surge un pedestal circular adornado con las armas de Madrid que sostiene la estatua del dios Apolo. However it was not until the reign of Charles IV that it was nished. It was Ventura Rodrguez, who also designed Cybele and Neptune Fountains, that was in charge of the design. Nevertheless, it was sculptor Manuel lvarez that oversaw the actual project. Afterwards, it was Alfonso Bergaz who completed the work. The fountain consists of a central section with steps and large slabs on all four sides. On the sides are two grotesque masks (mascarons) which sprout water on three overlapping seashells of different sizes. The cornice rests on four buttresses decorated with four statues which represent the seasons of the year. On top of all this, there is a circular pedestal, bearing the arms of Madrid under the god Apollo.

6. Fuente de Diana Cazadora Fountain of Diana the Hunteress

DIRECCIN Plaza de la Cruz Verde, s/n. ___________________________________________ Tambin conocida como Fuente de la Cruz Verde, por el nombre de la plaza donde est ubicada, la fuente combina en su construccin materiales de ladrillo y piedra, tanto blanca como de granito. Est adosada a la fachada del huerto del desaparecido Convento de las Bernardas del Santsimo Sacramento, mediante la cual se salva, a modo de terrapln, el fuerte desnivel existente entre las calles Mayor y Segovia. Esta fachada, que el conjunto aprovecha como pilar, condiciona su diseo arquitectnico, adoptando una estructura ms prxima a las fuentes de caos que al modelo de pilastras o columnas imperante en las fuentes de Madrid en los siglos XVIIy XVIII. El conjunto consta de tres cuerpos, unidos entre s mediante un zcalo de granito. El central, que se dispone a mayor altura, integra un escudo de Madrid labrado en piedra blanca, bajo el cual aparece una lpida con la siguiente inscripcin: Siendo correjidor el Excmo. Sr. Marqus de S Cruz. Ao de 1850. Sobre su dintel descansa una estatua de Diana, ADDRESS Plaza de la Cruz Verde, s/n. _____________________________________________ This fountain is also known as the Fountain of the Green Cross, because that is the name of the square where it is situated, Plaza de La Cruz Verde. This fountain is made of red brick, white limestone and granite stone. The statue stands against the wall of the former orchard garden of the Convent of Bernardas of the Holy Sacrament. The garden is a natural slope that connects two major streets running at different levels: Calle Mayor above and Calle Segovia below. The fountain leans against the Convents structure but the latter conditions the fountains architectural design, making it more similar to the fountains of spouts than to the model of columns which was the fashion for fountains in Madrid in 17th and 18th centuries. The monument consists of three elements united by means of a large granite plinth. The central piece which is higher, incorporated in its design the arms of Madrid, inscribed on white stone. Underneath there is plaque with the following inscription Being Mayor His Honour the Marquis of Sta. Cruz.

El grupo escultrico se encuentra anqueado por dos pias ornamentales, de piedra blanca. La fuente presenta cinco caos en su frente (tres de los cuales se encuentran en el cuerpo central) y uno en cada lateral. Sus aguas se depositan en tres pilones: el principal est ubicado en el frontal y los otros dos en cada lado, todos ellos construidos en granito y de planta rectangular. Construida a iniciativa del Ayuntamiento de Madrid para suministro de agua potable, fue inaugurada en el ao 1850 en la Plaza de la Cruz Verde, recinto que toma su denominacin de una antigua cruz de madera pintada con este color, con la que era costumbre sealar los lugares donde se llevaban a cabo las ejecuciones de la Inquisicin. Su trazado corri a cargo del arquitecto Martn Lpez Aguado, mientras que el grupo escultrico, procedente de la desaparecida fuente de Puerta Cerrada, fue realizado en el siglo XVIII por los escultores Ludovico Turqui y Francisco del Valle.
1850. On the pediment there is a statue of Diana,dressed in a short tunic. She was the virgin goddess of the hunt and protector of nature. The statue was chiselled in marble, as were the two mythological dolphins situated at her feet. The sculpture is anked by two ornamental pineapples of white stone. The fountain presents ve spouts on the front (three of which are on the central part) and one on each side. The fountains waters ow from three fonts. The main one is at the front and the other two are at the sides of the fountain. All of them are made of granite and have a rectangular shape. Built by the Town Council of Madrid to supply drinkable potable water it was inaugurated in 1850 in the square called Plaza de la Cruz Verde. The square got its name from an old green wooden cross. It was the custom to use these green crosses to mark places where executions had been carried out by the Inquisition. The details and design were in the hands of the architect Martn Lpez Aguado, while the sculptural work, taken from the Fountain of Puerta Cerrada was carried out by the sculptors Ludovico Turqui and Francisco del Valle in the 18th century.
7. Fuente de Felipe IV Fountain of Philip IV

DIRECCIN Plaza de Oriente. ____________________________________________ Esta fuente, formada por dos piletas subcirculares, se compone de un doble conjunto escultrico, de diferente datacin, ubicada frente al Palacio Real. La fuente presenta un desarrollo simple pero de notable valor esttico. Un plinto rectangular, rematado en cuatro extremos de disposicin diagonal sobre el que descansan sendos leones de bronce acostados, constituye el cuerpo central del conjunto, realizado por Elas Vallejo. Sobre el basamento central se encuentra la estatua ecuestre de Felipe IV, tambin de bronce, realizada por Pietro Tacca bajo diseo de Velzquez en el siglo XVII, con la colaboracin de Martnez Montas y de Galileo Galilei para lograr el equilibrio del quido. La parte frontal y trasera del conjunto se asienta sobre dos estanques de escasa profundidad. A los pies de la estatua ecuestre se sita el segundo conjunto escultrico, realizado en 1843 por Francisco Elas Vallejo y Jos Toms por encargo de Isabel II. Este conjunto consiste en una composicin a modo de reejo de espejo, compuesto por dos bajorrelieves ADDRESS Plaza de Oriente. ___________________________________________ This monumental fountain with its two circular-like pools holds two sculpture groups of different age placed in the main axis between the Royal place and the Opera Theatre. The fountains design is simple but harmonious. A rectangular plinth designed by Elas Vallejo lies at the centre of the fountain. Four bronze lions rest at its corners. On an elevated base the bronze statue of Philip IV on horseback dominates the view. The statue is the work of Pietro Tacca following Velzquez designs of the 17th century. It is thought that Tacca received assistance from Martnez Montas and Galileo Galilei to ensure the balance of the horse. The front and rear part of the monument are facing pools of shallow water made of granite blocks and iron balustrades where the pool meets the monument, and protected by a brim of limestone in the outer perimeter. A second group at the feet of the equestrian gure was devised in 1843 by Francisco Elas Vallejo

realizados por Jos Toms y que representan la imposicin del hbito de la Orden de Santiago a Velzquez por parte del Rey Felipe IV y una alegora de la proteccin del monarca a las artes y las letras. Los laterales oriental y occidental presentan sendas esculturas representando guras masculinas de ancianos que sirven de alegora a los ros Jarama y Manzanares. En el primer caso, bajo la escultura aparece una fuente compuesta por dos pilas superpuestas con forma de concha que vierten aguas al amplio piln semicircular. En el segundo, la alegora del ro descansa sobre un cntaro del que brota un surtidor de bronce que arroja las aguas sobre sendas fuentes ya descritas y a un piln simtrico al citado anteriormente. Se trata de una obra maestra de la estatuaria ecuestre, no slo por su calidad artstica, sino tambin por sus caractersticas tcnicas. Es la primera escultura a caballo del mundo en la que ste se sostiene nicamente sobre sus dos patas traseras y, discretamente, tambin sobre su cola. La obra consigue su difcil equilibrio gracias a un calculado estudio de los puntos de apoyo y la distribucin de los pesos de la estatua. El conjunto se completa con un pedestal, y dos fuentes, elementos de menor inters artstico. Fueron realizados en el siglo XIX, dentro del contexto de las obras de construccin de la Plaza de Oriente. El monumento fue inaugurado ocialmente el 17
and Jos Toms by order of Queen Isabel II. The piece is arranged symmetrically, as if a mirrored reection. Two bas-reliefs of Jos Toms represent the concession of the Knighthood of Santiago to Velzquez by King Philip IV and an allegory of the royal patronage of the arts. The western and eastern panels are occupied by allegories of the rivers Jarama and Manzanares in the shape of elderly males. In the rst case, below the sculpture is a fountain of overlapping shell-shaped double basins throwing water to the big semicircular pond. The second allegory is resting on a pitcher where a bronze font pours water onto yet another semicircular pond. It is a masterpiece of equestrian sculpture, not only because of its undeniable artistic quality but for its technical features as well. It became the rst horseback statue to stand on two legs (also discretely on the tail). The work attains a difcult equilibrium thanks to a thorough study of weight distribution. The group is later completed by a pedestal, adorned with various sculptures, and two fountains, elements of lesser artistic interest. They were all designed and made in the 19th century. within the context of the layout of Plaza de Oriente. The monument was ofcially inaugurated on

8. Fuente de los Galapagos Turtles Fountain

DIRECCIN Plaza de Nicaragua, s/n (Parque del Retiro). ____________________________________________ Obra del arquitecto Francisco Javier Maritegui, siendo Jos Toms autor del grupo escultrico de granito y piedra caliza. La fuente est compuesta por un surtidor superior en forma de caracola situado sobre una taza que, a su vez, se apoya en una columna en forma de palmera recubierta de hojas. A sus pies hay cuatro nios montados sobre otros tantos delnes de cuyas bocas surge el agua que cae en el vaso inferior, tras salvar dos gradas recubiertas de vegetacin. Al nivel de la segunda de estas gradas hay otros cuatro surtidores que vierten sus aguas primero sobre unas conchas y posteriormente al vaso inferior. Estos cuatro surtidores representan dos ranas y dos galpagos, que le han dado su nombre popular. La Fuente de los Galpagos o Fuente de Isabel II est situada en los Jardines del Buen Retiro, aunque originalmente estuvo en la Red de San Luis, junto a la Gran Va. Fue inaugurada en 1832 para conmemorar la jura como princesa de Asturias, o segn otras fuentes el nacimiento o el primer cumpleaos, de la que sera la reina Isabel II. La fuente no tena meramente un carcter conmemorativo y ornamental, sino que serva para el abastecimiento de agua. Tras la inauguracin en 1858 del Canal de Isabel II la fuente dej poco a poco de tener dicha funcin utilitaria. ADDRESS Plaza de Nicaragua, s/n (Parque del Retiro). ___________________________________________ It is the work of architect Francisco Javier Maritegui in collaboration with sculptor Jos Toms who is responsible for the creation of the sculpted group in granite stone and white limestone. The fountain is provided with an upper font in the form of a sea shell placed over a stone platter which in turn is supported by a high column with the shape of a palm tree. At the feet of the palm tree four children are riding dolphins. Water sprouts out of the dolphins mouths onto a lower vase after falling on a series of grades covered with vegetation. At the level of the second grades another four water pipes also contribute to the lower pond. It is these latter spouts, representing frogs and turtles, that have given the fountain its popular name. The Turtle Fountain or Fountain of Isabel II is located in the Retiro Gardens but it initially stood in the Red de San Luis, close to Gran Va. It was inaugurated in 1832 to commemorate Isabels royal oath as Princess of Asturias and heiress to the crown, or according to other sources to celebrate her rst birthday. The fountain was not merely decorative but it was meant to improve the supply of water of the population. With the opening of the Canal de Isabel II in 1858 and the arrival of a safe and constant supply of water to the city, such fountains fell gradually in disuse by the citizens.

Las pasarelas de la primavera del 2011 ensearon un gran variedad de tendencias y trajes para la temporada de otoo que viene. The Spring 2011 runways showed a great array of new and exciting trends this season. A mixture of volumes, textures and colors created a sleek and modern look for fall. Menswear-inspired and 70s trends will continue to have a strong presence this season. Looks were mostly neutral, in varying shades of grey, with mixes of blue to keep colors fresh and on point. The runways of Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week played up a light, airy gray for day looks and more matte, gunmetal pieces for night. The use of blues as a highlight is fresh and modern. This new mix can be amplified further with black. The menswear structure of clothing will continue to be a large influence on this seasons

Esa fbrica de piedra, madera, ladrillo o hierro que se construye y forma sobre los ros, fosos y otros sitios, para poder pasarlos que nos describe la enciclopedia es, a veces, uno de los elementos del Patrimonio inmueble ms olvidados -de tan usadospor todos los ciudadanos. Esta Gua de Rutas de Turismo Cultural ha querido, resumidamente, mostrarnos la gran diversidad y riqueza de los puentes histricos de la Comunidad de Madrid; puentes que jalonan cuatro rutas principales que discurren de Madrid a Soto del Real; de Rascafra a Canencia; de Buitrago del Lozoya a Boadilla del Monte; de Aldea del Fresno a Aranjuez dando fe de la gran diversidad de estilos, utilidades y elementos constructivos. Tantos como caminos; de tanto porte como importantes fueron (y son) las comunicaciones; nuestros puentes son testimonio de otras pocas y de quienes vivieron en ellas y los utilizaron, contribuyendo al desarrollo de una Regin que -sobre todoes un cruce de caminos, un ddalo de inquietudes e iniciativas enriquecedoras. That fabric made of stone, wood, brick or iron which is raised and built to enable us to cross rivers, moats and other places, as it is defined in the encyclopaedia, is often part of our heritage which people tend to ignore, possibly because we use them so often. This Cultural Tourism Route Guide aims to provide concise information about the great variety and wealth of historic bridges in the Madrid Region. These bridges are found along the four main routes from Madrid to Soto del Real, from Rascafra to Canencia, from Buitrago del Lozoya to Boadilla del Monte and from Aldea del Fresno, with a wide range of styles, functions and building materials. There are as many as there are roads and they are as large as important is communication; they provide testimony of other times and of those who lived by and used them, helping to develop a region which is, more than anything else, a crossroads, a labyrinth of enriching interests and enterprises. PUENTE DE SEGOVIA
Conecta el Paseo de Extremadura con la calle de Segovia, sobre el ro Manzanares y la va de circunvalacin M-30. Aunque no hay unanimidad sobre la fecha exacta de su construccin, se puede armar que es el puente ms antiguo de la ciudad de Madrid. Se sabe que fue construido a nales del siglo XVI (entre 1582 y 1584), reinando en Espaa Felipe II. Fue precisamente este rey quien encarg su construccin al arquitecto Juan de Herrera pensando en dar mayor uidez, al paso sobre el ro Manzanares, a una de las principales vas de acceso a la capital: el camino de Segovia. Consta de nueve arcos desiguales de medio punto, que decrecen

The Segovia Bridge spans the Manzanares River between the Paseo de Extremadura and the Calle de Segovia and the M- 30 beltway. The oldest bridge in the capital, it was built between 1582 and 1584 during the reign of Phillip II. He ordered its construction to the architect Juan de Herrera so that the Manzanares could be crossed from one of the citys main access routes, the Segovia highway. The Segovia Bridge has nine unequal semicircular arches that decrease in size toward both ends. The solid-granite bossage extends to form ridges.

Conecta la Glorieta de Marqus de Vadillo con la Glorieta de Pirmides, sobre el ro Manzanares y la va de circunvalacin M-30. Existi otro puente en el mismo lugar, pero, al no disponer de una buena infraestructura, era peridicamente destruido por las riadas. La ltima de ellas fue en 1720, ao en que se derrumb bajo la presin de las aguas el que haba sido levantado en el siglo XVII. Fue entonces cuando se decidi construir otro ms fuerte y con unas caractersticas distintas. Se termin en 1732 y destaca por sus arcos de medio punto, labrados en sillares de granito. En el centro de la obra se pueden observar dos hornacinas, que representan a los patronos de Madrid, San Isidro y Santa Mara de la Cabeza. Ambas estn fabricadas en piedra caliza y el responsable de su ejecucin fue Juan Ron.
THE TOLEDO BRIDGE

The Toledo Bridge spans the Manzanares River and the M-30 beltway with the Plaza de Pirmides and Plaza de Marqus de Vadillo at either end. Another bridge had been built on the same site in the seventeenth century, But it was gradually destroyed by floods. It finally collapsed in 1720 under the pressure of flood waters. It was decided that a stronger bridge would be built in its place. The Toledo Bridge was completed in 1732. It has semi-circular arches of granite ashlar. There are vaulted niches at the centre of the bridge with figures of Madrids patron saints, San Isidro and Santa Mara de la Cabeza. Both of the limestone figures were sculpted by Juan Ron.

El puente, de decoracin modernista y compuesto por dos bvedas paralelas de hormign armado, vino a remplazar a uno anterior que era conocido como Puente Verde, debido al color de su barandilla. Est decorado con osos rampantes, smbolo de Madrid. Fue inaugurado el 13 de junio de 1909 con el nombre de la Reina Victoria, esposa de Alfonso XIII. Durante la Repblica cambi el nombre por el de Puente de Galicia, hasta que despus de la Guerra Civil volvi a recuperar su nombre original. Los atardeceres sobre la capital, desde este puente, son dignos de contemplarse, as como la vista de la Catedral de la Almudena baada en luces anaranjadas.

The view of the sun setting on Madrid from this bridge is quite beautiful, especially the Cathedral of Almudena, as it is bathed in the soft amber light.

Escrito y traducido por: Petar Spasojevic Cuarta vez en Espaa, segunda vez en Madrid, primera vez estudiando Espaol. Todo esto era suciente para uno de los mejores viajes de mi vida. Madrid e International House me ofrecieron todo para una estancia inolvidable. En primer lugar, IH Madrid es una escuela en la que hay muchos estudinates de todo el mundo que estudian no solo Espaol sino tambin los otros idiomas. Durante mi estancia de 4 semanas mejor dos niveles y 4 profesores se preocuparon de que mi espaol mejorara muy rpido. Todos los profesores queran siempre explicarnos todo lo que no entendamos, darnos muchos ejemplos del uso de la gramatica y lo que es lo ms importante, hablbamos espaol todo el tiempo y tambin siempre tenamos que escribir para practicar la lengua escrita. Madrid me ofreci todo: monumentos histricos, la comida espaola tradicional y vida nocturna que no v nunca antes. Es una ciudad que no duerme nunca y adonde volver muy pronto, pero uno est seguro de que: mi estancia en Madrid no habra sido la misma sin IH Madrid y cada vez que vuelva Espaa, Madrid e IH sern mi eleccin.

Fourth time in Spain, second time in Madrid and my rst studying Spanish: All this ws enough for one of the best trips of my life. Madrid and International House offered me everything needed for a memorable stay. First IH Madrid is a school where there are many students from all over the world who study not only Spanish but also other languages. During my four week stay I moved up two levels with four teachers who took care that my Spanish improved very quickly. Each teacher was always ready to carefully explain anything we may have trouble understanding, offered many examples in grammar use, and enabled us to, most important of all, constantly practice speaking Spanish as well as always writing Spanish. Madrid gave me everything: monuments, traditional Spanish food and nightlife like I have never seen before: It is a city that never sleeps and somewhere to return to as soon as possible, of this I am sure. My stay in Madrid could not have been the same without IH Madrid and each time I come to Spain IH and Madrid will be my rst choice.

El lechazo es la cra de la oveja, genricamente cordero, que se alimenta slo de la leche de la madre, pero el lechazo churro, adems, debe ser hijo de una hembra ovina de raza Churra. Es por lo tanto un cordero lechal de raza churra (cordero churro lechal). Esta raza de ovejas es tan antigua como la historia de la regin donde se localiza, Castilla y Len (Espaa), ya que fueron los invasores celtas los que cruzaron las ovejas del centro de Espaa con los carneros que ellos trajeron y as obtuvieron el primitivo tronco churro del que derivan las ovejas churras actuales. Es muy rstica, es decir perfectamente adaptada a las condiciones geogrficas y climticas de esta tierra, la ribera del ro Duero, que atraviesa de parte a parte la comunidad autonoma de Castilla y Len. Se clasifica como de aptitud lechera, esto quiere decir que los ganaderos la explotan principalmente para la produccin de leche, por lo que cuando la cra se separa de la madre, a los 20 a 25 das del parto, las ovejas entran en fase de lactacin y ordeo. Esas cras, con pesos vivos medios de 10Kg, se sacrifican y comercializan como lechazo churro. Es a esa edad y peso cuanto mayor es el rendimiento en canal y adems tienen la proporcin idnea de msculo, hueso y grasa para la elaboracin de los famosos asados, la forma ms tpica de cocinarlo. Desde el mes de mayo de 1997 se cuenta con el Reglamento de la Indicacin Geogrfica Protegida del
The lechazo is a young sheep,usually called lamb which is only weaned on its mothers milk but the lechazo churro,as well as that is the young of a female sheep of the Churra breed.So for this reason it is a weaned lamb of the churra breed. This breed of sheep is as old as history itself in the region where it is found in Castilla- Leon (Spain) It was the Celtic Invaders who crossed the sheep from central Spain with the rams which they had brought and so obtained a primitive strain of churra from which the modern churras are derived. It is very rustic, that is to say, it is perfectly adapted to the geographical conditions and climate of this part of the country ,the banks of the River Duero,which crosses that part of the autonomous region of CastillaLeon It is classed as apt for weaning which is to say that the shepherds exploit it mainly for milk production so that when the young are separated from their mothers at 20 or 25 days the lambs enter in a phase of lactation. These young lambs which weigh on average 10kg are slaughtered and sold as lechazo churro.Its at this age and weight when its yield is best when split open and as well it has the ideal proportions of muscle, bone and fat to make the famous roasts, the most typical form of preparing it. El cordero asado es un plato muy tpico en las zonas de Castilla como Burgos o Segovia. Es tradicin prepararlo durante las fiestas navideas a lo largo de todo el pas, pero sin duda las ciudades y gentes castellanas no lo dejan pasar. Su tierna y suave carne es uno de los alicientes de este plato, ms todava si el cordero es lechal. Elaboracin de Cordero asado:

Se utiliza un horno de lea que debe permanecer a 180 grados de temperatura, y que se ha ido calentando lentamente durante toda la maana con madera de encina con un ao de secado. Tambin se puede hacer en el horno de casa y queda tambin muy sabroso. Su elaboracin se basa slo en la calidad de la materia prima y en la habilidad del maestro asador; porque simplemente se pone el cuarto de lechazo, cubierto por su propio epipln o ligera telilla de grasa sobre un recipiente de barro (en ocasiones se le suele untar un poco de manteca, pero en los lechazos de alta calidad no es necesario), en el que previamente se ha rellenado la base con agua y unas gotas de limn. Se aade algo de sal y al horno. En mitad del proceso, ms o menos, se da la vuelta al lechazo, boca arriba, y antes de servir se le arrima al fuego para que la parte de arriba se dore y quede crujiente. Pasados una hora y tres cuartos estar listo para disfrutarlo
To prepare Roast Lamb

You use a wood- fired oven which has to be at 180C and has been heating slowly all morning with evergreen oak wood which has been been dried for 12 months.You can also roast it at home and it will be delicious. The correct preparation is based only on the materials used and the ability of the master chef. Because you simple put a quarter of the lamb covered with its own epiploon or a light camlet of fat in a clay jar with some water and and a few drops of lemon juice in the bottom, add a little salt and pop it in the oven,sometimes you can spread a little lard but in the best quality lamb this isnt necessary. When it is more or less half- done you turn the lechazo over face up and before serving put it close to the flame so that the upper part becomes golden and crispy In an hour and three quarters it is ready to enjoy.

Las arquitecturas pintadas fueron una de las opciones elegidas por muchos artistas para resaltar las escenas y los episodios representados en sus cuadros. Estos fondos arquitectnicos sern el hilo conductor de esta exposicin, que abarcar desde el siglo XIV al XVIII. El proyecto se detendr tanto en aspectos generales, con el n de mostrar al pblico la evolucin de estos decorados, como en el abanico de matices que contribuira a su independencia como gnero, ya en el siglo XVII.Antonio Lpez The depiction of buildings in paintings was one of the options used by artists to emphasise the scenes and episodes depicted in their compositions. These architectural backgrounds constitute the guiding thread of the exhibition, which spans the 14th to the 18th centuries. It will focus on general issues that will reveal to the visitor the evolution of these decorative backgrounds, as well as offering a detailed and wideranging analysis of the various issues that contributed to the creation of an independent genre from the 17th century onwards.

En su trabajo, Fogarasi articula amplias y complejas tramas discursivas que exploran los mecanismos de representacin de la hegemona cultural, as como sus posibles lneas de fuga. Son obras referenciales y didcticas en apariencia, pero con una fuerte presencia esttica y formal, en las que resuenan ecos del minimalismo y del arte conceptual. A partir de una lectura histrica transversal y de un uso crtico del espacio expositivo, en esta exposicin el artista analiza el uso del arte abstracto como elemento de modernidad durante la Guerra Fra y cmo ese hecho se puede relacionar con el proceso de conversin de las ciudades contemporneas en escenarios de representacin y control. Andreas Fogarasi (Vienna, 1977) examines the aestheticization and commercialization of urban space and the use of architecture, art and design as instruments of legitimation at the service of power, using different media and formats, from video, photography and text up through installation art and sculpture. In his work, Fogarasi articulates broad, complex webs of discourse that explore the mechanisms by which cultural hegemony is represented, as well as their possible fault lines. His pieces are referential and didactic in appearance but also have a strong aesthetic and formal presence, in which echoes of minimalism and conceptual art can be heard. With a transversal reading of history and a critical use of exhibition space as the point of departure, in this show the artist analyses the use of abstract art as an element of modernism during the Cold War and explores how this fact can be associated with the process by which contemporary cities have become settings of representation and control.

Desde 1904, Picasso visitaba a menudo el Circo Medrano, instalado cerca del estudio que el artista tena en el Bateau-Lavoir, en Montmartre. La acin al circo se haba desarrollado ya entre los pintores impresionistas atrados por su luz y su movimiento. Sin embargo, la aproximacin de Picasso tiene un carcter ms universal y profundo. A travs de las simblicas guras del circo, el pintor realiz una reexin sobre la vida del artista y la vincul a su investigacin sobre los problemas fundamentales de la pintura. Las dos guras principales de esta obra revelan los polos del arte de Picasso, la creatividad y la fantasa, por un lado, y la seriedad y el rigor, por otro. La acrbata sobre la bola, presente tambin en otra pintura importante de ese momento, Los saltimbanquis, muestra el temperamento de juego propio del artista.
From 1904 onwards Picasso regularly went to the Cirque Medrano, which was located near his studio in the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre. The Impressionist painters had already been interested in the circus, attracted by its light and movement. Picassos interest, however, was of a more universal and profound nature. Through the symbolic gures of the world of the circus he offered a reection on the life of the artist while also using this theme as part of his process of investigation on fundamental issues of painting. The two principal gures in the present work reveal the two poles of Picassos art: creativity and fantasy on the one hand and seriousness and rigour on the other. The gure of the female acrobat on a ball, which is also to be seen in another important painting of this date, The Family of Saltimbanques, reveals Picassos characteristically playful temperament.

Durante casi ochocientos aos, Teotihuacan fue el centro cultural, poltico y religioso de una potente civilizacin. Una gran metrpolis antigua, la mayor ciudad construida en el continente americano en poca prehispnica, que alcanz su apogeo entre los siglos II y VII dC. Teotihuacan signica en lengua nhuatl el lugar de los dioses o el lugar donde se hacen dioses, nombre vinculado a la leyenda del Quinto Sol, del Cdice Chimalpopoca, redactada en 1558 en nhuatl por un autor de quien se desconoce el nombre. Segn la leyenda, sera en Teotihuacan donde nacieron los dioses; de ah que la mayor parte de los pueblos de la meseta mexicana se sintieran descendientes de esta civilizacin.

Esta exposicin, que cuenta con el Alto Patronazgo del Rey de Espaa, soberano de la orden del Toisn de Oro, mostrar obras de Rubens, Velzquez, Carreo de Miranda, Antn Rafael Mengs y Goya. Retratos cortesanos y piezas de artes decorativas, armaduras y libros miniados, permitirn conocer a los hroes, Geden y Jasn con el vellocino de oro, y a los smbolos de la orden. La exposicin estar presidida por el El martirio de San Andrs, de P.P. Rubens que conserva la Fundacin desde 1639.

This exhibition,whose patron is the King of Spain, sovereign of the Order of The Golden Fleece,shows works by Rubens, Velzquez, Carreo de Miranda, Antn Rafael Mengs and Goya. Portraits of courtesans, pieces of decorative arts, suits of armour, and illustrated manuscripts will permit you to know more about the heroes Gideon and Jason with his golden eece and the symbols of the order. The exhibition will be presided by The martyrdom of St. Andrew by Rubens which has been in possession of the Foundation since 1639.

Dispone de 80 cabinas, cada una de ellas con capacidad para cinco personas, y recorre una distancia de 2.457 metros, alcanzando una altura mxima de 40 metros. EL TELEFRICO is an original and ecological aerial transport means linking the town centre with the main green belt area in Madrid, the Casa de Campo. The run starts from the Paseo del Pintor Rosales and ends at the Casa de Campo. You can observe a unique and different Madrid from the Telefrico. It has 80 cars, each with a capacity for ve people and covers a distance of 2457 metres, reaching a maximum height of 40 metres.
