ACADEMIC PROJECT ONE - 2010

Regeneration and Revitalization of Birziet Palestine The aim of this brief was to design a model example for the people of Birziet, that would activate the abandoned village by community participation and by designing a sustainable building using local resources and materials to help re-create a new system that people of Birziet can follow. The design includes a multifunctional cinema screen and a designed coffee and arts studio that relies upon heating and cooling from existing oven and wind chimney.

Winter: In winter the cinema screen will be divided in 8 panels that will be one sided mirror so that it can reflect the incoming rays of sunlight directly into the pocket. The screen will be made out of wood and will be retractable so that within the day it can be used as seating and during the night as a screen. Summer: Since the sun rays will be to strong during the summer, a net shading will also be implemented to diffuse the sunlight and provide a shade over the seating/ screen. The panels will be turned to an angle to allow the south west wind to not get blocked but pass through the screen and help with bringing cool air within the chimney of the building. The design of the retractable seating, shade and screen all connect with the retractable roof of the existing building.(pg. 05) The lower level will be used as a art rented studio and the upper level for a coffee and shisha place.

Winter: The existing bakery will be used to generate heat from it that will be used to heat the building. Fumes and gases will be let outside the oven directly into a steel lining shaft that will exhaust the fumes at the top of the chimney built on the bakery. insulation on each floor will block the hot air that gets heated due to the steel lining in the chimney. the hot air will enter the top vent. The retractable roof will be opened in the morning to bring in the east morning sunlight. Summer: The chimney will also be used as a wind catcher. A vent will be opened on the west facing side of the chimney that will suck in the wind and direct it down a shaft and be brought by a lower placed vent at the bottom of the first level to cool and ventilate the building. at the same time the upper level has a folding door balcony on the west facing wall to allow ventilation and bring in the cool breeze. The retractable roof also will improve ventilation. 5

ACADEMIC PROJECT TWO - 2010

The Idea Store Shadwell Basin, East London The project brief consisted of designing a 6000m2 Idea store much like the present one in Whitechapel, London. The design needed to include dance studios, performance space, theatre, libraries, offices, toilets and design studios. The design needed to relate to the site and the concept of the idea store. The concept of this design was therefore to create a very open planned space, where the performance center would have the option of being open overlooking the basin or being closed off for private events. The design included a series of fragmented buildings that gave great flexibility in movement and access.

ACADEMIC PROJECT THREE - 2011

Each fragment of the designed museum represented important landmarks of Athens. The faade of the fragment facing the respective landmark each has a protruding window that allows a view of that landmark, giving it a visual connection. Other than this the materiality used for each of these extensions is the same material represented in those landmarks. So for the Panatheniac stadium there is marble, Acropolis there is stone, for Syntagma square there is marble, for the Olympic Village it is steel and for the Zappeion there is concrete.

ACADEMIC PROJECT FOUR - 2011

MAIN COURSE SECTION

The Queens Market as a Performance, The Restaurant as the audience Queens market located in the Newham borough of east London is a special market that represents what London is today. A place where many different cultures come together in one place, interact and exchange with one another that in other places may not do so. These cultures are so diverse that they are integrated in such a dynamic and energetic way that they almost create a new identity of their own. The Concept of this designed restaurant is therefore able to highlight these qualities of Queens Market by encouraging people to enter the market from elsewhere and simultaneously activate the in-active spaces within the site. The restaurant is design as four segments, introduction, appetizers, main course and dessert located in strategic positions within the market. They all represent different stories and rhythms and also act as a uniform body of design.

The material strategy for the wall was implemented on the basis of using natural and sustainable materials. The glulam beams and timber materials used, picks up on the natural and organic materiality the Queens market has. The design of the faade is inspired by the fabric stalls in the market. The curious openings and verticality of the fabric inspired this module designed structure. The designed tables represent fabric textile engravings 1mm thick, so that when they are pulled down from its faade position it represents how the fabric pieces roll down within the stalls of the market.
