Kids Sermon ARE YOU A FRIEND?

Note: A Power Point is available on this site that goes along with this lesson: http://www.scribd.com/doc/69231265/ARE-YOU-A-FRIEND

Place the letters for FRIEND on PowerPoint, or write on a chalkboard or dry erase board. Write the remaining part as you talk about each letter of the word friend on the board. F Friends are all around us R Real and Genuine I Invite a friend to know Jesus E Example to others N Who Never changes? D Do the right thing S Burden of Sin Introduction Ask: If you have an F in your name stand up. (Give time to do this) Say: What are some things that begin with letter F? (Call for a few answers) Say: Can anyone tell me what it means to be a friend? (Pause) Lets find out.

Memory Verse: A friend loves at ALL times. Proverbs 17:17a. ACROSTIC SERMON F = Friends another word for friends is links. (Have a child come up and pull the paper chain out of the bag. Let them hold one end of the chain as you hold the other). Do you see this paper chain? (Show chain) Our friends are all those people who we are linked around us. These people are: Our family, grandpa, grandma, aunt, uncle, brothers, sister, baby, teacher, principal, mom, dad, friends at school and friends at church, kids on your neighborhood all these people are your friends. As long as they are linked to this chain, they are our friends. What happens when we get mad at someone or they hurt us? (Have child pull hard to break it apart). The link is broken and the friendship is hurt. We have to mend it. What can you do to mend our friendship? (Allow time for a response) We may need to say I am sorry that I hurt you. I am sorry that I knocked off your books. I am sorry that I said that was dumb. (Glue back the link). Now the link has been mended. Give the helper the paper chain for helping. R= Friends are real and genuine. (Call up four children to help play the parts as you tell the story) Once, there was a man who was taking a walk down the road. Along came some robbers who took his money and beat him up. (Child one will lie down) They were very unkind to him. The poor man fell on the ground and moaned in pain. His eye was black and blue and his body hurt all over from the beating. Along came a man (Child 2) who was on his way to a meeting at work. He was all dressed up in a suit and did not want to get dirty so he would not stop to help the poor man although he called out, Please help me. A little later, along came a lady (Child 3) who was afraid of the man so she ran as fast as she could away(Tell her to run back to her seat). She did not know this stranger. The poor man was getter weaker and weaker as he called out for help. A doctor came along (Child 4) and heard his cry for help. He hurried over to him and listened to his heart beat. Then, he gently picked him up and put him in his car taking him to the hospital. He told the emergency to take care of him and send him the bill. Which person was really a true friend? A true friend will help someone when they need help. They will not be too busy to help a friend who needs help if they possibly can help. God want us to be friends to those around us. We need to help our mom and dad at home. We can help our teacher if they ask for help in the classroom. We can help our grandparents when they are sick.

I= INVITE A FRIEND: Invite two kids to come up front. Take out a bag of candy. Give them each a piece of candy one for themselves and an extra piece to give away. Tell them that the candy represents other kids. Tell them to go and invite a new friend giving them a piece of candy to come back up front to stand by you. When all four kids return, give them all two pieces of candy telling them to repeat the same thing. Have all eight kids return.

Jesus told us to go into the world, our community, and tell others about him. They may never know unless you tell them about Jesus and how much he loves them. If we invite one that makes two. If those two invite one that make four.

E= Will be a good example. In school I would guess that you have rules in your classroom, Right? Can you name a few for me? (Display some rules) Some may be: Stay in your seat, raise your hand, keep your hands to yourself, follow directions, be kind to others, and obey the teacher. If I were to ask you what was the most important rule, what would you say? Does anyone know the Ten Commandments? Jesus gave us the Ten Commandments for rules to live by. One day, when Jesus was here on earth someone asked him what the greatest commandment was. Which one do you think it was? This was Jesus answer. Love the Lord God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. We are to love him with our whole begin. When we do that, he will help us to become the best example we can be as a friend. He is our friend and He will show us how to be a friend.

N= Never change. There is only one friend who will never change and that is Jesus. He loves us no matter what we are like or how we are. He loves us when we are angry, hurt, lonely, frightened or even when we do something that makes him sad. A friend sitting next to you may be your friend one day, and the next day decides to play with someone else. A friend who youre played with last year may have made a friend with a new student this year leaving you along. Those things make us sad. But remember, friends change that is the way God made us. But one thing he promises us is that, he will never change. He loves us so much and is the best friend that will ever have. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

D= Do the right thing. Call up a boy and a girl. Friends will share. Yesterday, mom had made some cookies. (Take out five individual packages of cookies the snack sinze ones that contain 6 each) When Sarah and John came home from school, they wanted to eat some. I want some of those cookies left over that mom baked, said John. Me too, said Sarah. Both kids went into the kitchen. John got there first and took three cookies (Give John three packages of cookies) leaving only two packages left. Then Sarah came into the kitchen and found only two cookies left. (Give Sarah two packages of cookies). When Sarah picked up the cookies she said, That is selfish. I would have given you the three cookies and taken only two if it was me dividing them out Well that is just what I did for you, said John, I gave you two and me three. God wants us to do the right thing and being selfish is not being like Jesus. Tell the kids to GO AND DO THE RIGHT THING with the cookies. Share with all their classmates at snack time. Thank them for helping.

S= Burden of Sin. What is our last letter? Right, Letter S. Have a kid walk a straight line. That was pretty easy. Say: Sin is like these books (Hold up books). Maybe (name child) told a lie to mom when she asked if he had completed his homework. (Put a book in his arms) He also told a lie to his teacher when he told her the dog ate up his homework. (Add another book) He told another lie when he was called to the principal office because of punching someone when they called him a name. (Add more books) Now walk a straight line. That seems just a little more difficult. When mom got home and called him for dinner, he told her he had his room cleaned so he could go outside and play ball. (Add books in out stretched hand to his side. He needed a pencil at school and took one off the desk next to him. Add more books to the other hand outstretched. Tell the child to walk the straight line now. Ask Is the load too heavy now? Jesus on the Cross When we carry a load of sin around it gets difficult. Jesus gave his life for us when he died on the cross. When we ask him into our lives he will forgive us for our sins, and take away our heavy burden of sin. We will not have to carry it any longer. Our load will be lighter like when (name child) walked the line without any books at all. He will set us free. Close in prayer. Rev. Jeanne McIntosh October 2011.
