UP THE

ETREX

Turn on the GPS

Change Page to the Menu and check the batteries.

To make sure you are collecting data in decimal degrees you need to go to setting. Other wise you will need to covert each entry. Not a deal breaker but a pain. Use the front toggle and find the Main Menu --> Toggle to Setup and push to select.

Toggle to Units --> Find Position Format You need to be in hddd.ddddd Change to the Satellite page. You need to wait to collect waypoints until you have at least 4 satellites. What is your accuracy? Compare with several other people. Check out the elevation. What do you notice about this value?

WAYPOINTS: DELETE

OLD WAYPOINTS

Find--> Waypoints --> Nearest ( Push to OK) At the top there is a menu Find then a Page icon then an X Toggle to the page icon and click --> Toggle to Delete All -> Yes

WAYPOINTS: ADD NEW


Page to Main Menu Toggle to Mark Man Push the toggle in to marks your first point. You can keep the number or type in a name for that point. To add information - Toggle to the waypoint number on the flag ( the first one should be number 1) push to select and type in feature name. As backup, it is critical that you keep a data journal with each point recording: latitude and longitude, and other relevant information. GPS units fail, break, get lost, get stolen and then you have only memories. More Resources

LAUNCH DNR GARMIN


If you get the error below, choose OK.

Click GPS Choose Auto Connect to GPS. It may take a minute to find the port. When it does open, the GPS name will appear in the window. However, the projection information is incorrect. The data you collected is unprojected geographic coordinates latitude and longitude WGS 84.

Go to File Set Projections. Set the datum to WGS 84 and leave the projection to No Projection Choose OK. Go to Waypoint Choose Download.

CONVERT THE DATA TO A SHAPEFILE TO VIEW IN


Open the Campus.mxd

ARCMAP

Back in DVR Garmine Got to File Save to ArcMap Shapefile layer Navigate to the GPS_lab_yourname folder and open it Type in a name for your file. You points will be added to the Table of Contents in ArcMap

Right click the testpoints ( you will have a different name). Choose zoom to layer. Evaluate the accuracy of the points with respect to the orthophoto base map? Are the off consistently? Are the off in the same orientation? You can experiment with the ruler tool to document your exploration.
