CHAPTER ONE

DISPELLING THE MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS CENTRED ON DELIVERANCE

I

t is of paramount significance to point out from the onset the truth that in many Charismatic circles across the globe, the doctrine of deliverance is one of the most controversial and confusing subjects that Christians have ever encountered. This is a typical scenario especially in today’s modern era whereby deliverance ministers and ministries are mushrooming across the globe, with many assuming titles as Specialists of Deliverance. The most overworked Christian vocabulary in the Body of Christ across the globe today is the word, "Deliverance" as it is trending and shaping every sphere of spiritual endeavour for many churches. It appears that the idea of deliverance has created a lot of hype in which some believers have branded their churches as deliverance ministries while others have opted to advertising their ministries on television and other forms of media, inviting the masses to come to their special deliverance classes.

As a consequence, many at times venture into the deliverance ministry with barely any knowledge of what they are doing, culminating in unsuccessful deliverances, disappointments and frustrations as people walk away still in bondage because the deliverance minister did not understand the root problem of the person in need of deliverance. On one extreme end are those who do not believe in deliverance at all, citing that it is not possible for a born again Christian to be demon possessed. Although scripturally correct, passivity in this area creates a scenario whereby demons are eluded and comfortably hibernate in various spiritual quarters of humanity as no spiritual endeavour is undertaken to expose and cast them out. On the other extreme end are those who are demon-conscious and go to the extent of hunting and searching for demons everywhere in every opportunity they get to the extent of blaming every problem on demons. In other words, they attribute every small problem to demons such that logically, they believe that every problem needs deliverance. Yet the Bible is very clear that the works of the flesh are not dealt with by deliverance but by repentance as the passions of the flesh need to be crucified and not cast out (Galatians 5:24).  Extremes of both doctrine and practices in deliverance are highly attributable to a lack of revelation knowledge of the Word of God on the subject as many are completely lost at sea as to how to effectively conduct deliverance.  That is why it is important that those venturing into this powerful ministry be properly trained on how to conduct deliverance prior to being released into the ministry.

This book is therefore a means to dispel the myths and misconceptions centred on the doctrine of deliverance and to point out errors in current practices among the so-called deliverance ministers so that you have a deeper revelation of how to conduct Bible-Based deliverance. It suffices to mention that contrary to current practice, the ministry of deliverance was never intended to be a separate entity in the Body of Christ by itself. Nor was it initially designed for those who have somehow attained a stratospheric pinnacle of enlightenment in matters of the spirit. Instead, it was designed to flow hand in hand with all the other aspects of the teaching, prophetic and healing ministry. Its isolation as a super-special ministry has led to imbalance and sometimes demon-consciousness, resulting in people opening themselves up to more demonic attacks as opposed to freedom. Through this book, we seek to restore the consciousness of God and of the authority that God has given us as believers in conducting deliverance. We are not ignorant of the devices of the enemy; yet we do not want to be demon-conscious and end up operating in doctrinal error. Through revelation teaching based on God’s Word, we can be aware of all the devices of the enemy and yet be God-conscious of our pivotal role in conducting deliverance.

This topical compendium is a buffet of divine truths served up with a dish of provocative revelations of God’s word which are seasoned with barbs of prophetic spices and delicacies of revelatory flow on spiritual warfare. The title of the book, The Rain Of Fire, is derived from the character of manifestation of God as a Consuming Fire that burns, melts and infiltrates the demonic realm with flashes of lightning coupled with a pounding, booming and rumbling sound of thunder, exploding in the atmosphere and shaking the demonic kingdom. In John the Revelator’s apocalyptic vision, there are three unusual sounds coupled with fire proceeding out of the throne of God: He testified that,

"Out of the throne proceeded lightning and thunder and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God " (Revelations 4:5).

In view of the above scripture, what do you think the fire burning before God’s throne is for? For decorating the Heavens? No! Fire is a symbol of victory in spiritual warfare! It’s for roasting, burning and scorching demonic forces released on assignment against us believers. This is the same burning coals of fire which God extracted from His throne and placed on Prophet Jeremiah’s mouth to enable him to spit fire against his enemies. When confronted by the Prophets of Baal in spiritual combat where battle lines were drawn in the spiritual realm, Elijah called down a Rain of Fire from Heaven which consumed the alter and silenced the voice of his enemies once and for all (1 Kings 18:17-40). In a similar vein, when two Captains each with their fifty men who were soldiers were sent to arrest him on the mountain, he again called the Rain of Fire upon them and they perished at the sound of his declaration:

If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men (2 Kings 1:9-14).

This practical demonstration of God’s power at that level is the most recommended spiritual diet the Church requires in this season in order to deal effectively with demonic forces infesting the spirit world. Just like Elijah, we need to get to a level where we call liquid fire from Heaven such that it will chrystalise and solidify into a tangible spiritual substance manifesting as a visible physical fire in the natural realm, burning demonic entities and tools used to perpetrate evil in the Dark World. During deliverance, we have to release fire from God’s Throne and rain it on earth as a liquid substance, causing demonic forces to melt away completely in God’s presence.Therefore, in all our battles against wicked spirits, we must fight fire with fire since the only language demons understand is the Fire of the Holy Ghost.  It is for this reason that this book has been titled, The Rain Of Fire, as it befits the manner in which we deal severely with demonic spirits.

Against this backdrop, this treatise will furnish you with insight,tools and weapons to wage an effective, tactical and strategic warfare against forces of darkness as you pursue your God-designed and God-intended destiny. This book is therefore a deliverance weapon in your hand that will equip and empower you with revelation knowledge on the art of spiritual warfare so that you are able to decisively deal with the whims and vagaries of the enemy and set the masses free from the debilitating life circumstances of poverty, sickness and limitation in progress that have imprisoned God’s people for ages.

THE ESSENCE OF DELIVERANCE

What Is True Deliverance?

But upon Mount Zion, there shall be deliverance

Before we delve deeply into our discussion of the revelation of deliverance, it is incumbent upon us that we define the term from a Biblical perspective so that you will have a clear understanding of what deliverance entails. My understanding of deliverance is that it is the spiritual emancipation of an individual that is under satanic control and bondage either spiritually, mentally or physically. This satanic bondage may range from mild oppression to full-scale possession where an individual is violently insane. The term satanic bondage as used in this context means the influence or control of an individual’s body, soul or spirit by Satan and his hordes of diabolical evil spirits. This can come in various forms of spiritual entanglements such as witchcraft and sorcery, magic and occult, idolatry and ancestral worship, spell casting and enchantments, vodoo and fortune telling and other diabolical operations of Satan. Notorious spirits from which an individual can be delivered include such demons as poverty, sickness, depression, suicide and death and other diabolical operations of the devil. However, although the familiar and servient spirits control the person in possession, the actual programming orders for that person come from the higher demons, normally the powers and principalities. Unless delivered, those possessed can actually become biological robots unable to control their minds and emotions. There are often many spirits involved in remote controlling their victims and they are backed up and reinforced by the principalities and powers.That is why it is of uttermost importance to understand spiritual hierarchy, divine order and protocol in the dark kingdom so that we are highly effective in dealing with their operation in spiritual combat.

In retrospect to the Biblical exegesis and hermeneutical understanding of the Word, deliverance therefore connotes to the prophetic act of breaking and unlocking spiritual cages, padlocks and chains that have kept God’s people imprisoned for ages, demolishing and crashing down demonic walls of resistance in the spirit world, dismantling satanic forces and powers contending the destinies of the masses, breaking yokes, webs of emotional, physical and mental entanglement, uprooting satanic establishments, alters and evil foundations, dethroning demonic entities from the seats where they have enthroned themselves, while at the same time releasing blessings, unleashing breakthroughs, and decreeing Open Heavens over God’s people so that they can fulfil their God-given destinies and unreservedly partake of the inheritance God has lavishly bequeathed upon every believer in Christ.

However, it is of paramount significance to pinpoint from the onset the fact that although casting of devils is a central theme and core activity in every deliverance ministry, this ministry is not about demons! On the contrary, it’s about guiding and helping the masses come into the reality of the victory that Christ died to secure their liberty. The ministry of deliverance is about bringing spiritual victory and freedom to those who are in bondage, whether it’s through demonic possession, oppression or obsession. It’s about ensuring that the masses are holistically delivered from a morass of debilitating life situations such as poverty, lack, demonic influence, limitation in progress and witchcraft operations through undertaking the following prophetic acts; namely, casting out demons, pulling down strongholds, breaking up legal rights, ministering inner healing to humanity as well as rendering prophetic direction through prophetic instruction to recipients of the deliverance anointing. 

Definition Of Deliverance:

In its full context, deliverance connotes to the act of rescuing humanity from demonic bondage, calamity, deception, destruction, manipulation and other precarious situations and circumstances spiritually engineered in the demonic realm against the destinies of God’s people. It is a process that takes place when one is transitioned from a state of being spiritually imprisoned, chained, caged or detained by demonic spirits to a state of liberty or freedom where one begins to fully and unreservedly enjoy the rights and privileges bestowed upon him in Christ. It incorporates the spiritual act of setting free the human spirit, soul and body from the chains of bondage or captivity by the wicked man (demonic spirits) (1 Samuel 17:37; Psalms 7:2). The main agenda of the ministry of deliverance is to bring about spiritual victory, breakthrough and freedom to those who have been held hostage by the enemy through debilitating life circumstances of poverty, sickness, death, or limitation in progress, so that the can worship God freely and fulfil their God-given destinies. In a holistic sense, it connotes to the prophetic act of casting out demons, pulling down strongholds, breaking up legal rights, ministering inner healing to humanity as well as rendering prophetic direction through prophetic instruction to recipients of the deliverance anointing.

THE RATIONALE FOR CASTING OUT DEMONIC ENTITIES

What Qualifies Us To Conduct Deliverance?

It’s disheartening to note that dozens of folks have missed their God-given destinies because they have not yet been delivered from the hand of the enemy. As a consequence, many are not able to fully enjoy the benefits of blessings God has freely bequeathed upon them because demons are preying on them. The purpose of ministering deliverance is therefore to set free those who are in bondage so that they can freely indulge on what God has unreservedly and lavishly made available for them, without reservation. Sadly, many have gone to the extent of departing from this world without fulfilling their God-given destiny simply because they were spiritually held hostage by the enemy during their life time. Metaphorically speaking, a soldier who is heavily loaded with ammunition can die in battle if he doesn’t have a revelation of the power behind the weapons that are at his disposal. For this reason, many soldiers in Christ have been mortally wounded, spiritually disarmed and technically knocked out yet the very liquid power that neutralises the weapons of the enemy is in their hands. Jesus understood the power of the deliverance anointing upon his life as a spiritual weapon to dismantle demonic entities and set the masses free from demonic hostage and web of spiritual entanglement, hence he made a public announcement for the masses to come and freely make a withdrawal of the anointing:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach deliverance to the captives... (Luke 4:18),

Note that it takes the anointing of the Holy Spirit to set free those who are held in captivity by demonic entities. In other words, in order for you to conduct deliverance effectively and efficiently, you need to be anointed by the Holy Spirit. For this reason, Jesus received a special anointing to break every yoke of bondage and set the captives free from the web of satanic entanglement. To be anointed for deliverance means to be divinely lubricated with the presence of the Holy Spirit and duly certified by Heaven such that whenever you meet demons, they must check out of bodies of their victims they have held hostage and be evicted from geographical territories in which they are illegitimately resident. That is why there is such a things as a deliverance anointing which is an impartation of God’s supernatural ability upon an available and yielded vessel, in order to set free those who are held hostage in various domains of demonic imprisonment. The anointing is an endowment of a spiritual substance upon either a living and non-living object or vessel to enable it to perform beyond human or natural limitations. In terms of the character of it’s manifestation, the anointing is a spontaneous gushing, outpouring, overflow and bubbling of the spirit of God in the inner recesses of the human spirit, which overtakes the human soul and body in such a way that the cognitive faculties of the human mind is not able to comprehend. In the context of conducting deliverance, this anointing is administered through divergent prophetic acts of remitting heavenly sounds such as preaching, prophetic declarations, waving and laying and clapping of hands and other actions of faith that provokes its manifestation.

Do you notice in our opening scripture that Jesus says he is anointed to preach deliverance? This means that  preaching is the reason behind the release of the deliverance anointing. Preaching is what stirs up the atmosphere and cultivates a fertile ground for the rain of the anointing to infiltrate through the congregation. In fact, the words released during preaching produce flaming arrows that enters the realm of the spirit to dismantle demonic strongholds embedded both in the minds of people and in the atmosphere. The Greek word for preaching is kerusso which means to impart or herald spiritual knowledge. This implies that preaching is such an integral prophetic act of imparting revelation knowledge upon recipients of the deliverance anointing so that they are spiritually, mentally and physically positioned to receive their full deliverance. In other words, preaching is a divine legal precedent that stripes demons of their legal foothold and right to torment their victims. That is why, unknown to many folks, there are more demons that are actually cast out of people’s bodies during preaching than during the act of laying of hands.

A young girl was brought to church who had been bound by an evil spirit for so many years and the minute she sat down and listened to the man of God, the evil spirit left her. She could see the evil spirit looking at her and threatening her from a distance but that devil couldn’t stay. That demon was afraid of what the man of God was preaching and then came out of her and ran out of church.This is because when you preach, you collectively present the legal cases of people you are preaching to before the High Court of Heaven and argue out their cases. Even the most dangerous criminal is rendered powerless before the court of law when he loses the case to a plaintiff. That is why even the most vicious demons cannot withstand the verdict adjudicated against them before the High Court of Heaven during preaching of deliverance.

At this juncture, the question you are probably pondering over your mind is: How do I ascertain that I’m qualified to conduct deliverance? It’s simply because you have been granted delegated authority and power by Heaven and released on a divine assignment to cast out demons in your sphere of contact. Jesus said,  "As my Father has sent me, even so I send you to do the works I did " (John 14:12). In other words, you are operating under delegated authority to administer the same degree of supreme power  which Jesus used to defeat the devil at Calvary when he made a public spectacle of him before all his cohorts. In its simplest terms, authority is the legitimate right to exercise power while power is the dynamic ability to cause changes. The Greek word translated as ‘authority’ here is ‘exousia,’ and its basic meaning is to have the right to rule or govern, as one whose will and commands ought to be submitted to and obeyed. In contrast, the Greek word translated‘power’ is ‘dunamis,’ which means to have the inherent strength or actual ability to bring about a desired purpose.

Let me illustrate the dynamic workings of these twin processes of power and authority with reference to an analogy of a policeman and truck driver. Physically speaking, a person who drives a truck, has inherent strength or ‘dunamis’ power at his disposal to perform his task. On the other hand, a traffic officer has insufficient physical power to stop a truck, but he does have ‘exousia’ or delegated authority at his disposal. When the traffic officer puts up his hand, the truck driver stops his vehicle, because behind that gesture lies the whole weight of the police department. The police officer has authority  to stop any vehicle approaching at a designated roadblock on a public road. Even if he might be only fifteen years, the badge he wears on his shoulders grants him the authority  to stop a fifty year old man. Because he is acting under delegated authority from the police force, he has the right to arrest any traffic offender, as he deems necessary. In a similar vein, we have been granted the authority to arrest any demonic forces causing traffic congestion in our sphere of contact, regardless of rank and to forcefully evict those demonic entities who are parading our streets without the license of the Blood of Jesus. Concerning dunamis power, Jesus said:

You shall receive power (dunamis)when the Holy Ghost has come upon you (Acts 1:8).

By these words, Jesus alluded to dunamis, the demon-busting power that wreaks havoc to the demonic camp like a rain of bullets tearing apart a large army. Did you know that not only does dunamis refer to the dynamic ability to cause changes but it also refers to strength or power originating from numbers. In other words, it denotes to power that a large army has, usually of a nations’ combined forces. So, when Jesus said that you shall receive the Holy Ghost, he meant that the power of a large army shall come upon you. That means you are fashioned into a one man army by the power of the Holy Ghost. In other words, you are able to get done what a mega army with banners is able to accomplish. That is why the Bible contextually says,

You shall chase a thousand (demons) and two shall chase ten thousand (demons) (Deuteronomy 32:30).

This is the spiritual law of multiplication and mathematically speaking, this alludes to the power of large numbers. This means because of the power of a large army spontaneously bubbling in the inner recesses of your being, you shall produce a high voltage of God’s power that shall put to flight thousands of demons.This is because of the multiplied and amplified power of one army that has been imparted into your spirit man. That means you are a general of God, a soldier of Christ and a militant army in God’s hands. You are able like Gideon who defeated an entire army as one man because you are a force to reckon with. When you partner with the Holy Ghost, the two of you intricately working as one shall evict thousands of demons out of the bodies of their victims. No wonder the Psalmist says,

A thousand (demons)shall fall at your side and ten thousand (demons) at your right hand but it shall not come near you (Psalms 91:1).

This implies that you shall watch demonic powers crumbling in your presence and melting in every direction yet no calamity shall befall you nor shall any plague come near your dwelling. Corroborating this revelation, Jesus declared upon this rock I shall build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Since a gate is a strategic point of entry and exit that determines the extent to which a city is fortified, the gates of hell connotes to key and strategic forces of darkness and satanic establishments that draws their power from the pit of hell and at strategic times attempt to fire missiles against the people of God. In view of this, Jesus gave us the assurance that the church has been grounded, anchored and established as a militant and aggressive force to disquell every force of darkness.

It is in view of this high voltage of demon-busting power that immediately, after His resurrection from the dead, Jesus commissioned His disciples saying,
