This year there are 7 people running for 4 coroner positions in Washington County. One of the people running is Jim Gariepy, (pictured above) a licensed funeral director for 21 years, who is well qualified to perform the duties as one of the four coroners in Washington County. He owns and operates the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, Inc. in Salem and also works at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home in Cambridge. He is community minded, being involved in organizations such as the Salem Rotary Club, the Salem Rescue Squad where he is a NYS Certified EMT and also serves as the squads Assistant Captain. Other organizations include the Greenwich Elks Lodge, National, State and Local funeral directors associations and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Salem. He is married to Kimberly St. Onge Gariepy who assists him in the operation of the funeral home. They have one son, Michael, who is 13 years old. Jim says, I would appreciate the support of the voters of Washington County in the upcoming election on November 8th by electing me for one of the positions of Washington County Coroner. I also urge you to vote for those who are running along with me: Ed Parsons, Ruth Scribner, and Tracy Snell.

Here's some ideas on how you can easily add some fall accents to your home. * Fall is full of bright colors like reds, golds, yellows, burgundys and oranges so you the simplest way to add a fall feel by introducing fall colors. * Consider some of the small ways you can add fall colors without making major changes. For example, you could simply change your throw pillows for pillows in a bright fall color, add colorful, decorative candles, books or picture frames to add little touches of fall. * Painting a room in a bright fall color will enhance the room, but you don't need to do an entire room, you could simply do an accent wall in a yellow, gold or orange color. * If painting is more work than you want to take on, consider changing your window treatments. Get rid of your light airy summer curtains and replace them with heavier fabrics in a fall color. Not only will you give your home a more 'fall like' appearance, you'll enjoy the practical benefit of saving on your fall (and winter) heating costs. * You can easily add visual appeal simply using a center piece of fall flowers to bring in some natural beauty while adding a pleasant aroma of the season. * Or, consider showcasing the beauty of the fall harvest with a center piece of colorful gourds and Indian corn and fruits like apples and grapes. Enhance the appearance by including colorful non traditional fruits such as mangos pomegranate or even tomatoes. * Nothing says fall more than pumpkins and colorful leaves. At this time of year pumpkins are inexpensive and available at grocery stores, farmers markets and often at road side stands. Take a walk on a sunny fall day, enjoy the weather and gather some fallen leaves to spread around the base of a bright orange pumpkin. * Consider adding some candles with the scents of fall such as the cinnamon scent of a fresh baked apple pie or some sweet vanilla.

GREEN HOME IMPROVEMENTS YOU CAN TAKE TO THE BANK Going green with home remodeling is as good for your wallet as it is for the rainforest. Heres a list of green remodeling projects that are good for the earth and save you cash at the same time. #1Install High Efficiency Replacement Windows Modern energy efficient windows can reduce your home energy use by as much as 50% year round, and usually pay for themselves in just a few short years. If new windows are in your future, look for multiple paned windows, low e coatings, insulated frames, and gas fills. And dont forget that proper installation is just as important as buying quality windows when it comes to achieving high energy efficiency. #2Install a High Efficiency Heating System Depending on the climate, heating your home can account for over 35% of your overall home energy costs. New, high efficiency furnaces and boilers can reduce those costs by as much as half, depending on where you live and how old your current heating system is. Look for units with AFUE ratings of 90 or better, and remember that poor installation can sabotage even the highest efficiency furnace. #3Install a High Efficiency Air Conditioner According to the U.S. Department of Energy, air conditioning accounts for 5% of the total energy use in the U.S., and costs American homeowners $11 billion annually. That said, upgrading to a high efficiency air conditioner can make a big difference when it comes to reducing your monthly utility bills. Energy Star rated units are required to have SEER ratings of 13 or higher, though the highest efficiency models on the market currently have SEER ratings of 20 and higher. As a rule, the higher the SEER rating, the more money youll save. #4New Kitchen Appliances Kitchen appliances are a major consumer of energy in your home. Thanks to the federal governments Energy Star program, however, theyre also one of the easiest ways to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home. An Energy Star dishwasher or refrigerator, for example, can reduce energy use at those appliances by 40% or more, while an Energy Star rated clothes washer can save you over $500 over the life of the appliance!

Get Your Home Ready For Winter and The Busy Times Coming: 1) Furnace Inspection: * Call a professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. * Stock up on furnace filters and change them monthly. * Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. * If your home is heated by a hot-water radiator, bleed the valves by opening them slightly and when water appears, close them. * Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace. 2) Get the Fireplace Ready: * Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. * If the chimney hasn't been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. * Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. * Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. * Check the mortar between bricks and tuckpoint, if necessary. 3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows: * Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. * Use weatherstripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. * Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. * If your home has a basement, consider protecting its window wells by covering them with plastic shields. * Switch out summer screens with glass replacements from storage. If you have storm windows, install them. 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts: * If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. * Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. * Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. * Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. * Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home. 5) Service Weather-Specific Equipment: * Drain gas from lawnmowers. * Service or tune-up snow blowers. * Replace worn rakes and snow shovels. * Clean, dry and store summer gardening equipment. * Sharpen ice choppers and buy bags of ice-melt / sand. 6) Check Foundations: * Rake away all debris and edible vegetation from the foundation. * Seal up entry points to keep small animals from crawling under the house. * Tuckpoint or seal foundation cracks. Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime. * Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation. * Secure crawlspace entrances. 7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Batteries. A Fire Extinguisher, too! 8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes: * Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. * Drain all garden hoses. * Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. * Drain air conditioner pipes and, if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. * If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees. 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces. * Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. * Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. * Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. * Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. * Don't automatically remove dead vegetation from gardens as some provide attractive scenery in an otherwise dreary, snow-drenched yard. * Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area. 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit: * Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. * Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. * Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. * Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. * Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency. All common sense things, but, how often do we forget to do them?

SAFETY TIPS REGARDING USE OF LADDERS: Choose Your Ladder Wisely. Make sure treads and side retainers are in good condition and free of debris. Opt for fiberglass if theres any chance youll be working with wiring or near power lines, since metal and dirty or waterlogged wood can conduct electricity. Look Up! And dont underestimate the maximum load capacity you need: Even if you weigh 150 pounds, carrying three 44s will put you over a 225-pound limit. A duty rating of I, IA, or IAA (250, 300, or 375 pounds, respectively) should do the trick for most home projects. Get the Right Height. Standing on the top rungs or overreaching can be a fast track to a fall. Stay off the top two rungs of a stepladder, and the top three of an extension ladder. If youre deciding between two ladder heights, opt for the taller one to give yourself some leeway. Keep Your Hands Free. Use a tool belt or rope to haul equipment up and down the ladder. To avoid tripping as you climb, hold on with both hands, and pay attention to where the top section of the ladder meets the lower section. Angle it Right. Put the base of a ladder too close to a building and you could tip over; too far away and it could slip out from under you. Follow the 4-to-1 rule: For every 4 feet of ladder height, the base should be 1 foot from the wall. Position the ladder so that the distance from its base to the wall is one-quarter of the height of the ladder at its resting point, creating a 75-degree angle. For a quick check on the angle of your ladder stand facing it with your feet touching its feet and your arms extendedyour palms should rest on a rung at shoulder height. Check Locks. Ensure that extension-ladder rung locks are secure and the fly section (the top portion) is slid in front of the base (the lower section) before climbing. For stepladders, fully extend the rail spreaders. Never Climb on Shaky Ground. If the ground at the ladders base is uneven, make it level by digging out dirt and standing the legs on a wide plank. Make sure the ladder is firmly seatedit shouldnt rock or wiggle. And never use a ladder on icy ground. On hard, dry ground, rest feet (with textured-rubber pads intact) flat, free of slippery plastic tarps and debris. On grass or soft ground, flip the feet up and drive their spiked ends into the ground, or lay the feet flat and tie them down on the side (or brace them in front) with 1x2 stakes. Roof: Proper Extension. Extend ladder 3 feet above any surface that you're climbing onto. Roof: Gutter Support. Slip a 2x4 into a gutter to keep it from being crushed by the ladder. Stabilize. Don't rest an extension ladder against a tree or pole, where it can rotate and fall. Close Doors next to a ladder and ensure they are locked or barricaded. Use a ladder stabilizer (or standoff) around windows, for greater stability, and to position yourself at a more comfortable distance from the work. Jacks Use ladder jacks on Type I or IA ladders only. Hook ladder jacks onto two rungs of ladders. Never use ladder jacks higher than 20 feet. Above 10 feet, you must use a harness. Position jacks on either front or back of ladder. If the planks are in front, have another ladder available for access.

Extremely cold temperatures often accompany a winter storm, so you may have to cope with power failures and icy roads. Many homes will be too cold either due to a power failure or because the heating system isn't adequate for the weather. When people must use space heaters and fireplaces to stay warm, the risk of household fires increases, as well as the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Exposure to cold temperatures, whether indoors or outside, can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other serious or life-threatening health problems. To help in extreme cold conditions, use these tips to prepare: * an alternate way to heat your home during a power failure: * dry firewood for a fireplace or wood stove, or *kerosene for a kerosene heater * furnace fuel (coal, propane, or oil) * electric space heater with automatic shut-off switch and non-glowing elements * blankets * matches * multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher * first aid kit and instruction manual * flashlight or battery-powered lantern * battery-powered radio * battery-powered clock or watch * extra batteries * non-electric can opener * snow shovel * rock salt * food that needs no cooking or refrigeration, such as bread, crackers, cereal, canned foods, and dried fruits. Remember baby food and formula if you have young children. * Water stored in clean containers, or purchased bottled water (5 gallons per person) in case your water pipes freeze and rupture. * Medicines Prepare Your Home for Winter. If you plan to use a fireplace or wood stove for emergency heating, have your chimney or flue inspected each year. Ask your local fire department to recommend an inspector, or find one in the yellow pages of your telephone directory under chimney cleaning. Also, if youll be using a fireplace, wood stove, or kerosene heater, install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near the area to be heated. Test them monthly, and replace batteries twice yearly. Your ability to feel a change in temperature decreases with age, and older people are more susceptible to health problems caused by cold. If you are over 65 years old, place an easy-to-read thermometer in an indoor location where you will see it frequently, and check the temperature of your home often during the winter months. Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so your water supply will be less likely to freeze. To the extent possible, weatherproof your home by adding weather-stripping, insulation, insulated doors and storm windows, or thermalpane windows. If you have pets, bring them indoors. If you cannot bring them inside, provide adequate shelter to keep them warm and make sure that they have access to unfrozen water.

Member may qualify for one time rate relock prior to the expiration of the initial term for a fee of $500.
