About SANKEY
Custom designed metal products to meet your needs. It couldnt be easier.
Welcome to Sankey Australia
As a proud Australian with a strong commitment to local manufacture, we at Sankey pride ourselves on being experts in designing and manufacturing metal products for industry everything from pressing operations for motor and transformer laminations, to aluminium die-casting, expanded metal products, and Smarto guttering.
Countless Applications
Our versatile product range is ideal for applications in architecture, building design, rural applications, and production of consumer products which use metal. The range includes products well suited for decorative and practical screens for privacy, and against sun and wind, and others that are ideal for ooring, balustrading, and security.
A Superior Product
The manufacturing process of expanded metal mesh involves taking a at sheet of metal and simultaneously slitting and stretching it to form a diamond shaped hole pattern. During the process no metal is lost and the nal product is stronger per kilogram and lighter per metre than the original sheet of metal.
Versatility
Often incorporated as a popular architectural feature, expanded metal mesh offers the benets of decoration, protection, support and security. This versatile mesh allows light, heat, and air through, while retaining its strength, forming a very strong barrier for security purposes.
Variations
It is available in many variations which include pattern types, mesh sizes, material thicknesses (0.5-5.0mm), coatings (Uncoated/zinc-coated), material types (steel/aluminium), and weight bearing capacities.
Australian Partners
We are a proud partner to the Australian steel giant, BlueScope, who supplies raw materials used in production.

Manufacturing Process
The Expanding Process
Expanded metal mesh products are produced from solid sheets of carbon steel, galvanized steel, or aluminium and other metals/alloys. In the expanding process, the sheet is simultaneously slit and stretched, expanding the slits into diamondshaped holes of uniform size, shape and regularity. No metal is lost in the expanding process and the nal product is stronger per kilogram and lighter per metre than the original sheet. The newly formed strands and knuckles of the diamond-shaped trusses are at an angle to the original plane of the sheet, adding strength and rigidity. Because it is made from a solid sheet of metal, expanded mesh can never unravel. The metal strands which form the open diamonds of the new sheet permit light, heat, air, liquid, and sound to pass through, yet produce a virtually impenetrable barrier to larger solid objects. Even if cut at one or more points, the remaining strand intersections continue to hold.
Upper Knife
Lower Knife
The sheet advances between the knife one strand width beyond the lower knife.
The upper knife presses down and forms one half of the diamond design.
The upper knife then rises up and transverses one half diamond to the side as the material advances another strand width.
While the diamond design may vary, this illustration shows how a solid sheet of material becomes expanded metal without waste. The result of this expanding operation is a product that is lighter per metre and stronger per kilogram than the original sheet from which it came.
The upper knife presses down again to form another row of half diamonds to complete the hole shape.
The upper knife rises up again, transversing back in the opposite direction to its original starting position. The cycle continues until the sheet is completely transformed into expanded metal mesh.
Terminology
KNUCKLE
SWM
LWM
LWM is the distance from a point on a knuckle to a corresponding point on the following knuckle measured across the long way of the diamond shaped hole. This distance is also sometimes referred to as pitch LWM.
KNUCKLE Raised expanded metal is the form the product takes when it goes through the expanding process described SWM earlier. The strands and knuckles are set at a uniform angle to the plane of the sheet. This adds strength and rigidity, allows air circulation, and distributes the load WID ND on the metal to the RARAND THICKNESS mm TH ST supporting frames. No additional ST pressing operations are needed.
LWM
SW
SW is the overall dimension of the expanded metal mesh sheet measured in the same direction as the short way measure (SWM).
LW
LW is the overall dimension of the expanded metal mesh sheet measured in the same direction as the long way measure (LWM).
LW LW
N TH RA Flattened expanded metal is manufactured by passing ST SWM a raised expanded metal sheet through an additional cold roll reducing mill process. By attening the sheet KNUCKLE the knuckles and strands are turned down to produce a smooth and at surface, reducing the overall thickness and elongating the diamond pattern. LWM
SW
Knuckle
SWM A knuckle is the intersection of two strands and is always the width of two strands.

Thickness
KNUCKLE
Thickness is the actual measurement of the thickness of LWM the mesh material measured at the knuckle.
SWM
SWM is the distance from a point on a knuckle to a corresponding point on the following knuckle measured across the short way of the diamond shaped hole. This distance is also sometimes referred to as pitch SWM.
Strand Width
(SWM)
Knuckle
Thickness
Free air space is the percentage of the viewable expanded sheet area that is space, as opposed to metal material. Approximate values are provided in the product selection chart. Values for raised expanded metal vary from lowest value at normal incidence (i.e. when viewed with the sheet held at right angles to the line of vision) to highest value at maximum incidence (i.e. when viewed with the sheet slanting so that the thickness of strand is parallel to the line of vision, thus presenting a greater free area). For attened meshes only the value at normal incidence is given/relevant.
Guillotining
Knuckle
Guillotining is an operation to cut expanded sheets to SW x LW size (within the guillotining tolerance).

1. The above table is based on the XPM Industry Standard 1001 - Testing of Load Bearing Expanded Metal (structural meshes). 2. Load capacities given in the table are for Sankey Ruralmesh spanning in LW direction over clear spans, having every fourth strand welded to support with a minimum landing of 25mm. 3. The uniform and concentrated load capacities are essentially the same for double and triple spans. Linear interpolation and extrapolation are permitted. 4. Uniform load capacity is the maximum load just prior to permanent deflection (set) of mesh. Permanent set equals span/500 or 0.80mm, whichever is greater.
5. Deflections shown in the table refer to uniform loads causing a deflection of 6mm or span/360, whichever is less. 6. Concentrated loads have been applied through a 100mm diameter plate. They correspond to a localised deflection of 10mm. 7. For large simple spans the load carrying capacity is generally governed by deflection for double and triple spans by uniform or concentrated loads. 8. A load of 102kg approximates 1kN. 9. A load of 102kg/m approximates 1kPa pressure.

Louvamesh Installation
For maximum shading effect, Sankey Louvamesh should be installed with the LWM horizontal and the strands sloping outward and down. When the expanded metal is facing north, its shading effect begins at about 8:00am and continues until about 3:30pm during which time it provides extensive shade and reduced room temperatures. From sunrise until about 8:00am and from about 3:30pm to sunset, the maximum penetration does not exceed about 38% but because the mesh provides little restriction to airow, cooling and refreshing breezes are allowed to pass almost unhindered.
Clamping Methods
Galvanised steel fastening clamp sets are available for type GM and GR Gridmesh expanded metal. The clamp set consists of a top and bottom plate and bolt. All steel surfaces in contact with aluminium Gridmesh should be painted with zinc chromate.
Edge Trims
Sankey offer seven steel edge beading sections and standard steel angle sections suitable for use as expanded metal trims. In addition, special width trim sections can be manufactured to order.

General Information
Order Procedure
When ordering expanded metal mesh please provide complete prole details. Please specify: 1. Mesh type - Ornamesh - Gridmesh - Louvamesh - Maximesh - Balustmesh - Rendalok - Ruralmesh 2. Quantity of sheets 3. Sheet size - SW x LW (SW dimension rst) 4. Type of material - steel - aluminium - other 5. Finish - untreated - galvanised - powder coated 6. Tolerances (if required)
Camber
Camber refers to the bow in a sheet. It is measured by placing a straight edge along the concave side of the sheet parallel to LW, touching both ends of the sheet. The maximum distance between the edge of the expanded metal and the straight edge is the camber. The tolerance for standard expanded mesh is 5mm per 1 metre of length. For attened expanded metal it is 7mm per 1 metre of length.
Out of Square
The nature of the manufacturing process means expanded metal sheets have a degree of out of squareness. The tolerance for out of square is a maximum of 5mm per 1 metre of length, or 10mm per square metre on diagonals. These tolerances are for both standard stock and made-to-order sizes. Sheets can be re-squared by shearing on all sides.
Material
Expanded metal mesh products are manufactured from materials that conform to the following standards: - AS/NZS1594:2002, - AS/NZS1595:1998, - AS/NZS1734:1997, - AS1397:2001.
General Tolerances
All references to sheet size, strand width, thickness and mass are approximate. Every effort has been made to ensure these gures are accurate however the manufacturing process is subject to standard tolerances.
