SECTION B: Personal and Social Problems

1 (a) (i) Why are divorce, unmarried couples living together and remarriage after
divorce becoming more common in Hong Kong? (4 marks)
(ii) What are the effects of this trend on the children involved? (3 marks)
(b) (i) What does the bible teaching about divorce? (10 marks)
(ii) What do you think a Christian should say to a young man who says he is
going to live with his girl friend without getting married? (3 marks)

MARKING SCHEME:
(a) (i) Reason: (divorce)
- Divorce as a means of resolving martial problems is widely accepted.
- Of individualism; people are more concerned about themselves than about
others
- Women are becoming more independent financially
- Many people have an unrealistic/ too naïve/ too romantic/ view of marriage
- Divorce is no longer considered shameful
- Extra-martial affairs are increasing
- Fewer people have religious scruples about divorce
- Or other valid answers

Unmarried:
- They want to avoid unfair taxation system
- They want to avoid the legal binding involved
- They want to have a try-out towards marriage
- They are only seeking self-satisfaction
- They want to avoid permanent commitment
- They have been influenced by the mass media
- Fewer people have religious scruples about their personal behavior
- Or other valid answer

Remarriage after divorce:


- remarriage has become socially accepted
- they want someone to take care of the home/ children
- they want companionship/ security, especially in old age
- fewer people have religious scruples about remarriage

(ii) The effects on the children involved:


- They lack the care of both parents
- They may be emotionally disturbed
- They may develop wrong ideas/ misleading ideas/ about marriage
- They may become insecure/ uncertain about their identity
- They may feel inferior/ develop an inferiority complex
- They may do badly at school/ school work may suffer
- They might develop behavioral problems/ become delinquent
- They might find it hard to relate to others
- They may be discriminated against socially
- Illegitimate children might lose what otherwise would be their rights
- In some case it would be better in that they are removed from an impossible
situation

(b) (i) Bible teach about divorce:


- Man may not separate what God has joined together (Mk 10:9)
- The bible says divorce is not permitted
- A person who divorce and remarries commits adultery (Mk 10:11-12)
- Moses permitted to divorce to bring order to a chaotic society , but it was
not the standard that God originally intended (Mk 10:2-6)
- Paul said that a husband should not divorce his wife (1 Cor 7:11)
- When one partner becomes a Christian the believing partner should not seek
a divorce (1 Cor 7:12-13)
- When one partner becomes a Christian, if the unbelieving partner wants a
divorce, it should be permitted (1 Cor 7:15)

(ii) Christian should say:


- Marriage was instituted by God for our God for good and it should be
respected
- This action would be breaking God’s moral law because the Bible speaks of
marriage as God’s intention
- Persuade him to get married and seek God’s blessing
- Advise him to take his girl friend to see a counselor together
- Try to discuss the reasons for not getting married and put the Christian
viewpoint about love, sex, family, commitment etc. (up to 3 marks)

2. (a) Why are some people opposed to the sale of Mark Six tickets in supermarkets
and convenient store? (4 marks)
(b) Mention four social evils caused by gambling. For each social evil mentioned,
show how the bible teaches us to avoid it. (12 marks)
(c) Do you think that a day spent on a ‘gambling boat’ would be a suitable family
outing? Explain your answer. (4 marks)

MARKING SCHEME
(a) The reason:
- Availability may encourage children and young people to begin gambling
- Gangs may recruit young people there
- Shopping may be made inconvenient for regular shoppers
- There are already enough sales outlets; it would be harmful/ wrong to
introduce more
- People may be more easily led to buy when they can’t really afford it
- Or any other valid answer (any 2x 2marks)

(b) Social evils caused by gambling and application of biblical principles to avoid:
- People may depend on luck
We should trust God to provide our needs (Matt 6:31-33)
We should hope in God who richly provide us with everything for our
enjoyment (1 Tim 6:17)
- People may lose money and be unable to provide for their family
We are stewards of the money we have accountable to God for it use
(Matt 25:14-30)
- People may neglect their work
Work is ordered by God for our satisfaction and enjoyment (Gen 1:27-28,
2:15, 3:19, Eccles 3:13)
Also the bible condemn laziness (Prov 6:6-11, 2 Thess 3:10, 2 Thess 3:6)
- People may fall into debt .and get involved in illegal things
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and trap and into foolish and
harmful desires that plunge man into ruin and destruction.

(c) Is a day on ‘gambling boat’ a suitable family outing?

- It encourages individualism rather than a family spirit

3. Many Hong Kong people enjoy and benefit from going to Karaoke centers.
(a) What may be some of the harmful effects of going to Karaoke centers?

(c) What should you consider when choosing your leisure activities? (4 marks)

MARKING SCHEME
(a) Possible harmful effects:
- It may cause damage to hearing
- Young people may contact drugs/ alcohol there
- They may associate with bad elements and becomes gang members
- They may run into conflict with others and start flights
- It is relatively expensive for them so they may do outside work to earn
money for it
- Or they may waste a lot of money

(b) Advice from the Bible to a young person:


- There is a time for everything. Do the right thing at the right time. (Eccles
3:1)
- Leisure is needed for refreshment of our body and soul (Mk 6:30-32). Does
entertainment at Karaoke centers provide the right kind of refreshment.
- Instead of spending time to boost our own ego/ for our own entertainment,
we should spend our leisure time in activities helpful to ourselves and to
others or helpful in our Christian growth (Mk 1:35, Lk 4:16)
- We should not be mastered by anything
- We should take care of our body which is part of the body of Christ and
temple of the holy spirit (1 Cor 6:15, 19-20)
- We should make good use of our money entrusted to us by God (Mt 25:14-
30)
- We should avoid place where temptation is likely to occur (Mt 6:13, Mk
9:43)
- We may make bad companions and ruin our Christian characters (1 Cor 8:9)
- Christians should set a positive example in all that they do, to help people to
know God better (Mt 5:16)

(a) What can learn:
- We can work with and learn from some professional people such as social
workers, nurse and doctors
- We can gain life/ work experience
- We can develop personal skills
- We can establish a social network/ learn more about society
- We can build up self-confidence
- We can learn about the needs of other people and the reasons for those
needs
- We can develop a sympathy for/ understanding of other people

(b) The Christian motivation for community service:


- To share God’s love because God is love/ God loves all
- To follow Jesus’ example who came as a servant

- To obey God who has expressed concern about the poor/ the oppressed/
injustice in society/ widows and orphans etc
- Jesus say that the merciful will obtain mercy
- Christian love always seeks the good of others

- To help rescue/save people because God wants to bring salvation to all
- Because man is made in God’s image, so all people deserve help what God

(c) Do H.K. young people feel a responsibility to serve the community?

- Example 2: many join Auxiliary medical/ police(etc.) services for training

no need to give anything back
