Q1 A closed cylinder has volume 40cm3. The cylinder has height h and radius r.
.
b) Show that the surface area, S cm2, of this box is given by :
S=
2r2 + 80
r
(c)
S : [1 , 5] R , S(r) = 2r2 +
80
r
( e) Find the values of r and h for the surface area to be a minimum within this
domain.

Q2 A school yard accident occurs in the town of Baconsfield. A school boy falls into
a ditch that can be modeled by the cubic function shown below:
Mathematicians
working at the site
want to save the boy.
They first need to
calculate the equation
of the function in the
form:
a) Find the values of a ,b, c and d and hence determine the equation of the cubic
function.
b) If the boy is within the domain [-1, 2] and is located at the minimum point
between these points. Find the coordinates of the boys location. ( ie the
graphs minimum )

c) The clever mathematicians decide to place a ladder in the ditch. The boy can
then climb out. The ladder would have to touch the minimum point and also
reach the point ( 2 , 0 ). Calculate the length of the ladder to two decimal
places.
d) Realizing that their ladder was too short the mathematicians decide to take a
different approach to save the boy. They decide to flood water into the ditch
so that the boy begins to float to the point m with coordinates (x,y).
If the mathematicians have a ladder that is 13.36m in length and would like the
ladder to start from ( - 1 , 0 ) and reach the point m. What would the coordinates of
the point m have to be for the ladder to just reach the boy?
