Session #8:
The Communion and Concluding Rites
The final session in our study of the Mass and revised translation is about the Communion and Concluding Rites. Although the Lords Prayer has not changed, well review its meaning. There are some changes to the priests prayer that follows it; well explore the reasons for these changes. Through discussion, well uncover how we have encountered signs of peace in our lives, both within and outside church. Well also discuss the Lamb of God, which continues the theme of forgiveness and echoes John the Baptists wonder when he first saw Jesus at the Jordan River. Well discuss the nature of systemic sin described here, distinguished from the personal sin addressed in the Confiteor. Then well see the scriptural basis for the assemblys response: Lord, I am not worthy ... The Concluding Rite sends us forth to be Christ-like at our jobs and at school, with our families and friends, and with strangers. We will explore what it means to be sent from Mass into the world. Our time together will conclude with a review of what weve learned about the revised translation and about the Mass.

33rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 13, 2011 CHANGE OUR LIVES The letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the entire early Christian community that the return of Christ was imminent, and that devoting time or attention to anything else was foolish. As time progressed, this fervor subsided a bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if we should take them to heart, if we really believe that Christ still may come upon us as a "thief at night" (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Does this mean that we are to stop our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund? Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, living like children of the light and illuminating the world around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and security in Christ Jesus.

MASSES & CONFESSIONS MISAS Y CONFESIONES

Either way talents are there for a purpose--to be used. As Jesus' story shows, money has no value if it is buried. Our abilities are just as worthless if we never use them. Do you know what yours are? They are those special aptitudes unique to you. Unfortunately, the stories of the saints have not always helped us. Some of us believe we have to have extraordinary gifts like them to do anything worthwhile. Not long ago a scientist set up an experiment. She matched people recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis with people who had had the same illness longer. She expected the newlydiagnosed would show an improved outlook with a new "buddy," and this proved true. Surprisingly, the outlook of the helpers improved even more. Just the listening and befriending made all the difference. Think carefully about what your true abilities are and use them for welcoming, spreading joy, making peace, healing, or comforting. CONCLUDING RITES
The word mission comes from the Latin word mittere, which means to send. In its most general sense, a mission is an assigned duty or task. A mission can be a simple task like being sent to clean the yard, or it can be something quite serious such as being sent to relieve hunger in a poverty-stricken area. When we use the term mission in reference to the Church and the baptized, we are talking about something serious, because we are talking about being sent to accomplish Gods mission. The Church is missionary by its very nature because it exists to continue the work of the risen Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Church continues the response to Jesus words: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, until the end of the age (Matthew 28:1920). The Church accomplishes its mission through the ministry of the baptized. Through the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist), each of us is empowered for mission. We are sent forth from the baptismal waters and to keep the flame of faith alive in our hearts. In Baptism we put on Christ, in Confirmation we are strengthened with the fullness of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and each week as we cele--brate the Eucharist we are nourished with the body and blood of Jesus and sent forth to love and serve the Lord in others. While some of the baptized are sent to mission lands or hear an awe -inspiring call to service, each of us is called to witness to the person and message of Jesus in the daily tasks of our lives. All of us are sent to act as my friend does: to have a sense of urgency, to be singularly focused and live in the fire of Pentecost. This is the kind of witness that will accomplish the mission and it is everyones responsibility. Question for Reflection In what ways do you announce the Gospel of the Lord and glorify the Lord by your life?

Revised Roman Missal/Nuevo Misal Romano

Over the last few months, we have studied the upcoming new English translation of the Roman Missal, which we shall begin using on the First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2011, which is two weeks from now. Much still needs to be done as we ready ourselves for the implementation, and there will also surely be a little sadness as we bid farewell to the Mass translation we have become accustomed to over the last 40 years. However, despite some opposition and criticisms we may encounter, it is important to keep in mind that the process by which we have received the new Missal has been very methodical and comprehensive. There is never such a thing as a perfect translation, for each language has its own unique character. But many experts and Church leaders have worked diligently over the last decade to ensure we receive the most suitable and accurate translation of all the prayers as possible. In a very real way, this new Missal should help foster the full, active, and conscious participation of the faithful especially with respect to renewed interior participation at Mass. The rituals and actions of the Mass are not changing; rather, we are receiving richer translations of the original Latin words of the Mass. The new words will require priests and laity alike to be even more attentive to the deep meaning of the prayers. As we have seen, the new translation will reveal the Scriptural origins of the Mass more powerfully. And although some of the prayers may be longer or more complex than those we use right now, they would not be terribly different in length or style from many sentences among the Pauline readings that we currently hear in the Lectionary. The new texts also demonstrate the evolution of the Churchs understanding of how to use the vernacular most effectively in prayer. In fact, many aspects are a recovery of the devotional language that is familiar from private prayer books. It is an effort to cultivate a sacred vernacular an elevated style of speech that illustrates the signifiChurchs prayer, perhaps we should strive to understand and enter more fully into that life of prayer. Particularly as young people today find themselves having to combat radical secularism at every turn, it is of tremendous benefit to worship in a manner that is meant to radiate reverence, truth, and beauty unambiguously and abundantly. A renewed expression of the immensity of what happens at the sacred liturgy is essential this will inspire more seekers of truth to recognize their home in Christs Church. And ultimately, we hope that such beauty in the Mass will lead to an increase in vocations to the holy priesthood. We should therefore approach the new translation with joy, supporting our priests wholeheartedly as they strive to implement the texts. Page 5

cance of the occasion, and helps us enter a context of divine worship. As Pope Paul VI urged in 1969, the language used in the sacred liturgy should always be worthy of the noble realities it signifies, set apart from the everyday speech of the street and the marketplace. Our sacred music at Mass should also reflect this principle. We will sing new settings of the revised Gloria and Sanctus, but all music at Mass should exude a clearly sacred style, for our singing in praise of the Lord is a sacramentalizing of human speech. This is wonderfully evident in liturgical chant, which evokes the heavenly choirs in a simple yet noble fashion. These elements of the new translation are integral to prayer and worship in the Roman Rite, which in turn are key to our identity as Roman Catholics. It is this need to maintain a distinctive Catholic identity that makes the new Missal so important. Through it, we will achieve greater unity with Mass translations in other languages. But perhaps more significantly, our new translation of the Mass will help us to set ourselves apart from the culture at large. It will require us to exercise patience and discipline as we engage the new texts for the first time. It will necessitate deeper study of the faith by presenting the splendor of truth with greater precision. Even if there are difficult words or prayers, their meanings can be taught and the opportunity to catechize on the depth and mystery found in the words of the Mass can have great evangelizing potential. What better way to advance the New Evangelization than through the Holy Mass itself? The sacred liturgy is meant to transform and mold us, not vice versa! If we are uneasy with the
