Office Location: 5218 HP, Tel ext. 8999 Day and time of course (Lecture): 10:05 am - 11:25 am, Tuesday, Thursday, TB 360 Lectures begin and end: Sep 08, 2011- Dec 05, 2011. Tutorial/Lab: Monday, 10:35 am - 11:25 am (will start on Thursday, Sept. 15) SA402, TB236, SA304, TB340. Prerequisites: Ontario Grade 12 Mathematics: Advanced Functions; or MATH 0005, or equivalent; or permission of the School. Textbook: Elementary Linear Algebra, First Canadian Edition, Venit, Bishop and Brown, Nelson publishing. Course description: Systems of linear equations. Matrix algebra. Determinants. Complex numbers. Eigenvalues. Diagonalization and applications. Marking Scheme: Tests (best 3 out of 4) 45% Tutorials 5% Final Exam (3 hours) 50% Remark: Students who are absent from the final exam and do not have at least (30%) for the term mark (15 out of 50) will be assigned the grade FND. Tests: Four tests (50 minutes each) in the tutorial hours and rooms are scheduled on the following dates: September 26, October 17, October 31, and November 14. (Mondays). No make-up, early, or delayed tests will be held. Any missing test will be counted as zero (except for medical reasons, doctor's note must be presented). It is the students responsibility to pick up their tests in the following tutorial hours. Students must bring their student card to each test and place it on the desk where it is visible. Checking the term grades: You will be able to check your grades on WEBCT. You have the responsibility to bring to the attention of your TA or instructor any incorrect grade within two weeks of the day the grade is available to you. Any original test or tutorial paper must be presented to make any correction.

Tutorials: There will be problem solving sessions during the tutorials. In each tutorial you will be given questions to work on. You will be grouped in a team of four or five students. You are allowed to ask questions to the TA as well as to use the lecture notes and the textbook. At the end, each team submits one set of answers to the TA. Please make sure to always go to the tutorial section you are registered in. Final Exam: 3 hour exam will be scheduled by University. Calculators: Only non-programmable, non-graphing calculators are allowed on the tests and the final. Homework: Selected exercises will be assigned in class. These exercises are not to be handed in and will not be graded. However, to succeed in the course it is absolutely essential that you do the exercises on a regular basis.
