TECHNICAL MANUAL 24 TO 48 VDC CONVERTER

3.17

24 To 48 VDC Converter

3.17.1 General Description The 24 To 48 VDC Converter (Converter) is designed to provide 100 Watts at 48 VDC from a 24 VDC source. The 24 VDC source can be either positive or negative ground, and the 48 VDC output is always positive ground. The Converter is used to provide -48 VDC to the OMNIPLEXER at sites where only 24 VDC is available. Although the OMNIPLEXER can operate at 24 VDC, TCM4 E&M modules requires -48 VDC to ensure compatibility with other equipment. TCM4-FXS/FXO and TCM4-LPO/LPT modules require -48 VDC to provide loop current for the 2 Wire line. By providing -48 VDC from 24 VDC sources, the Converter ensures that any system or module compatibility problems are eliminated. Bayly's Converter is mounted on rails at the rear of the chassis. Input power requirements are 21 to 32 VDC, with an output of 48 VDC +0.5 V. With output power of 100 Watts maximum, any OMNIPLEXER configuration can be powered from one Converter. A green LED indicates when the Converter is functioning correctly. Output levels are preset at the factory, and cannot be adjusted in the field. 3.17.2 Installation Mounting Refer to the following diagrams. The Converter is designed to mount on the Data Connector Mounting Assembly at the far left as viewed from the rear of the chassis. Use the following steps when mounting the Converter: ! Mount the Chassis according to the installation instructions described in the Chassis section. The Converter must be mounted after the Chassis has been placed into the rack or cabinet. Remove and discard the clips securing the mounting screws to the Converter. Position the Converter between the mounting rails at the far left of the Data Connector Mounting Assembly. The heat sink must be on the left hand side of the Converter. Position the Converter such that the top and bottom mounting tabs of the Converter line up with the holes on the mounting rails. Secure the Converter to the mounting rails using the supplied screws.

Wiring The 24 VDC input connects to terminals TB1-1 and 2. The 48 VDC output connects to terminals TB4-1 and 2. Terminals TB2 and TB3 determine the polarity of the 24 VDC input. The Terminal Blocks are screw-clamp type terminal blocks located along the side of the Converter. No special tools are required other than the following: ! ! ! Small size Phillips (Star) screwdriver with twelve mm long shaft. Small size Standard (Slot) screwdriver. Appropriate lengths of copper wire. Always check local building codes concerning the type, gauge, and placement of wire. As a minimum, 18 AWG (1 mm) wire should be used. Cable Ties, 3 inch (7.6 mm), as required.

The following table describes the connections to and from the Converter: TB1 Terminals 1 2 TB2 and 3 Terminals TB2-1 TB2-2 TB2-3 TB3-1 TB3-2 TB3-3 TB4 Terminals 1 2 Function 24 VDC Input Common Function Positive Ground Common Negative Ground Negative Ground Common Positive Ground Function -48 VDC Output Common -48 VDC output Positive Common for -48 VDC Connect TB3-2 to TB3-3 for Positive Ground Description Connect TB2-2 to TB2-3 for Negative Ground Connect TB3-1 to TB3-2 for Negative Ground Description Positive or Negative 24 VDC input Positive or Negative Common Input Description Connect TB2-1 to TB2-2 for Positive Ground

Set-up Follow the steps below before applying power to the Converter: ! ! Temporarily disconnect the wires from terminals TB4-1 and 2. With a multimeter, check that the 24 VDC input power is between 21 and 32 VDC and the correct polarity. If it is, apply power to the Converter. Incorrect polarity of the 24 VDC input will result in a blown fuse. Check if the green LED is on. If the LED is not on, check all connections to the terminal blocks. If the LED still fails to illuminate, ensure the fuse is not blown. If the fuse has not blown, or replacement fuses continue to blow, replace the Converter. If the green LED still fails to turn on, replace the Converter. Always replace the fuse with a 3AG style fuse of the same rating of the fuse that was removed. To protect the equipment and to maintain safe operation, never replace the fuse with a higher rated fuse. ! Measure across TB4 terminals 1 and 2 using a multimeter set to measure DC voltage greater than 100 VDC. If the voltage is outside the range of 48 VDC +0.5 V, replace the Converter. Disconnect power to the Converter, then reconnect the Converter output wires to TB4 terminals 1 and 2. Reapply power to the Converter and verify that the main OMNIPLEXER DC/DC Converter has powered up (See DC/DC Converter Installation Procedure).

3.17.3 Maintenance and Troubleshooting No routine maintenance is required for the Converter. A Converter failure at a site causes the OMNIPLEXER stop functioning entirely. If the Converter cycles on and off over several seconds or minutes, the internal thermal shutdown circuitry is activating.

Corrective Action For temperature cycling problems where the internal thermal shutdown circuitry is operating, ensure that the Converter input voltage does not exceed 32 VDC, and that the Converter is not driving more than one fully loaded OMNIPLEXER chassis. The Converter is designed to provide full load at ambient temperatures of 50 oC. If the ambient temperature is above 50 oC, then the Converter will shut down to protect itself. If the above conditions do not exist, replace the Converter. For all other fault conditions, follow the set-up procedure described above. 3.17.4 Specifications Parameter Input Voltage Input Voltage Range Output Voltage Output Voltage Range Fuse Rating Maximum Output Power Efficiency Reverse Input Power Protection Output Short Circuit/Overload Protection 24 VDC 21 to 32 VDC 48 VDC 47.5 to 48.5 VDC (Not adjustable) 5 Amp Slow Blow 3AG 100 W 84% at full load Diode protected (Blows Fuse). Thermal shutdown circuitry cuts the output entirely. Automatically restores when load is removed for a period of 10 minutes. Specification
