Introduction

The infra-red remote control features a tv style remote and receiver with 6 digital and 2 analogue channels - each with 16 power levels. The outputs will source a current of up to 800mA, enabling small motors, bulbs and buzzers to be connected directly to the receiver. The remote control has a range of approximately 10 metres, although this may vary according to light conditions. Possible applications for the controller include: electronic locks, model vehicle control, robotics, appliance control for disabled users, model rocket launching, control in high risk environments, etc.

Preparing the Receiver

Insert 4 AA batteries into the battery box provided and connect it to the receiver board. NEVER USE A 9V PP3 TYPE BATTERY. Aim the transmitter at the receiver from a distance of about 1m and press the buttons 1 to 6 in turn. It is better to aim the transmitter slightly above the receiver, not directly at it. As each button is pressed, the green LED on the receiver should flash and a red flag LED should light up to indicate the selected channel. Note that only one output can be switched at a time in this mode. The two analogue outputs A and B on the receiver can each be set to one of 16 different power levels - like the volume on a TV. This enables, for example, variable speed control of a motor or adjustable brightness of a bulb. It is not possible to scroll through the levels by keeping the + or - buttons pressed. Each individual press of the button will increase or decrease the power level by one of the 16 steps. The yellow flag LED will change in brightness according to the power level. LATCHING OPERATION By default, the remote control system provides momentary switching. This means that the output channels remain switched on only while the respective buttons on the transmitter are pressed. However, by connecting a simple wire link on the receiver it is possible to achieve a latching operation. This enables a single press of a button to cause the respective output to switch on and stay on. A second press of the switch turns it off.

Using the Receiver

Each of the receivers outputs can source up to 800mA as they are interfaced via a darlington driver IC. The output devices are connected at the points marked 1-6 and A and B on the board. The illustration shows a filament bulb connected to output 1. Note that certain output devices, such as LEDs and some buzzers, have a polarity. When connecting these devices to the receiver, ensure that their positive and negative legs/wires are connected to the corresponding positive and negative connections on the board. The lower connecting points are positive, the upper row are negative.

Any motors connected to the receiver should be suppressed by soldering a 220nF polyester capacitor across the terminals of each motor. The illustration shows a motor connected to output A. The direction of rotation can be reversed by swapping the connections of the motor to the board.

OPTIONAL POWER SUPPLY FOR OUTPUT DEVICES As an option, a second battery can be connected to the board to power high current output devices. This prolongs the life of the receiver battery and prevents any malfunction if, for example, several outputs switched on together cause the receiver battery voltage to drop. If a second battery is used, it is connected at the points marked EXT PWR and it is necessary to remove the link resistor as indicated in the illustration.

Motor Drive Operation using Optional DC Motor Controller Board

The optional DC Motor Controller board (code: PPM090) provides a motor reversing feature for up to two motors via the infra-red remote control. When this board is used it is necessary to add a wire link to the receiver at the point LK2.
