About Kraig McNutt

McNutt is originally from Kentucky but has lived in Williamson County since the fall of 2000. He raises horses in Franklin on a small farm with his family. He is very involved in many Williamson County historical and preservation activities. McNutt has been blogging and publishing Civil War content since 1995. He has been studying the Civil War since the mid 1980s. He self-publishes hundreds of pages of historical research a year, mostly on middle Tennessee and Williamson County. The first 24 soldiers in this report have pictures of the men buried in their respective plots. Unless otherwise indicated, the photos of the soldiers come from the Williamson County Historical Society. The other soldiers listed after these just have pics of their markers. All pictures of the markers provided by Kraig McNutt.

Newton Jasper Anglin, Company H, 24th TN Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Enlisted at age 18 on August 24, 1861 into Beales Company, 24th TN Inf. 1 Listed as a deserter 28 June 1862, re-enlisted Dec 1, 1862. 1 He was wounded and listed as a POW 12/31/62 at Murfreesboro. 1 Furloughed 23 Feb 1864. Leg was amputated from Stones River wound. 1 Served through Spring 1865. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin and Nashville.

Elijah Lynch Baugh, Company D, 1st Tennessee Feilds Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Enlisted May 9, 1861 in Franklin as a Pvt. Re-enlisted at Corinth 30 April 1862 for two more years. 1 Admitted into Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, GA Sept 4, 1864. Stayed until Sept 12th. 1 Personally saw action at Seven Pines, Perryville, Gettysburg, possibly Franklin and Nashville.

William Maney Bowman, Company D, 32nd TN Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Enlisted Oct 10, 1862 as a Pvt in Knoxville. 1 Saw action at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign and Nashville.

General James P Brownlow . 1st East Tennessee Cavalry, U.S.A.

1 Brig. Gen. James P. Brownlow (1842-1879), married Belle Cliffe, daughter of Dr. D.B. Cliffe. 1 Though a Union man, he won the hearts of Franklin having exConfederate pall-bearers. 1 He is buried in the Cliffe lot in Rest Haven.

Joseph L. Campbell, Co G, 1st Tennessee Feilds Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Enlisted May 25, 1861 at age 21 as a Pvt at Camp Cheatham. 1 Re-enlisted at Corinth in April 1862. 1 Severely wounded at Stones River in the role of a color sgt. Also captured. 1 In early 1863 he was transferred to the F&S. 1 Records state that June 9, 1864 he was killed at Dalton. 1 Buried in Rest Haven Cemetery in Franklin.

Captain Tod Carter, Company H, 20th TN Infantry

1 Enlisted May 18, 1861, for 3 years, Pvt, 20 years old. 1 Appointed Asst QM, Oct 24, 1862 in Tullahoma. 1 The 20th TN saw action at Mill Springs, Shiloh, Stones River, Franklin (63), Hoovers Gap, Missionary Ridge, Franklin (64) and Nashville. 1 Captured Nov 25, 1863 at Wood House Ford, TN; part of the Missionary Ridge Campaign. 1 Sent to Johnsons Island in early Dec 63. Transferred to Baltimore Feb 9, 1864. 1 Mortally wounded nine times within a few hundred yards of his boyhood home at Franklin, Nov 30, 1864.

1 Mustered in Nov 2, 1861 as a Captain, age 30. 1 Elected Colonel Oct 28, 1861. 1 Browns Brigade, Stewarts Division, Buckners Corps, AOT 1 Taken prisoner at Fort Donelson on Feb 16, 1862. Transferred to Fort Warren (Boston Harbor) in early March. 1 Exchanged July 31, 1862. 1 Records show he was mortally wounded in action near Marietta on June 22; died on the 23rd. 1 5 5 | Gray eyes | Brown hair |

William E. Cunningham, Co F , 41st Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Mustered in Nov 4, 1861 as a Pvt into Capt Abner S. Boones Company (F). 1 Elected 3rd Lt 29 Sept 1862 & 1st Lt Oct 13, 1862. In Dec 63 he was promoted to Captain. 1 Captured at Fort Donelson Feb 16, 1862; exchanged in August. Served at Camp Morton. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin and Nashville. 1 William Eason Cunningham was the son of Rev. A.N. Cunningham, a Presbyterian minister. 1 W.E. Cunningham was one of the original members of the Franklin KKK. 1 Buried in Rest Haven Cemetery in Franklin.

Dan German, Surgeon, 4th Alabama Roddeys Cav, C.S.A.

1 Appointed surgeon April 17, 1862 and ordered to report to Gen P.G.T. Beauregaard at Corinth, Miss.

1 May have served in other CSA units before Apr 62, perhaps 154th TN.
1 Served in a Franklin hospital from Dec 21, 61 til Feb 21, 1862 as acting Surgeon. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Nashville.

George Grummond, Lt. 14th Michigan Inf, 2nd Lt. 18th Regiment, U.S. Infantry
1 Lieut. Col. Grummond served as Provost Marshal during the Union occupation of Franklin, Tennessee.
1 He served in the 1st MI Inf (May 61 til July 62) and 14th MI Inf (Mar 63 til July 65). 1 While w the 1st MI he saw action at Gaines Mill and Malvern Hill. 1 Following his discharge from the 14th MI, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 18th Reg., U.S. Infantry. 1 He was assigned to Fort Phil Kearny, WY. On Dec. 21, 1866, under the command of Capt. Fetterman, Grummond led a cavalry attack against the warriors of Red Cloud. 1 The entire detachment was killed in what became known as the Fetterman Massacre. 1 Grummonds widow, Frances Courtney Grummond had her husbands frozen body shipped back to her hometown, Franklin, to be buried in Rest Haven Cemetery.

1 John L. House operated a store with his brother Samuel and son Mansfield. 1 He was one of the original members of the Franklin K.K.K. 1 He was killed by Dan Griffin, a Franklin policeman, over a personal disagreement. 1 Re-enlisted after Shiloh at Corinth on May 1, 1862 for two more years.

1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin.

1 Buried in Rest Haven Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

1 Enlisted 28 May 1861 as a Pvt. 1 Captured Dec 12, 1862. Must have been released or escaped shortly afterward. 1 Appears to have been captured again in late Dec 1862 near Oxford, MS (Okolona), then paroled. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin. 1 Age 22 (1862) | 5 10 | Brown eyes | Fair complexion

William S. McLemore, Colonel 4th TN (McLemores) Cav, C.S.A.

1 William S. McLemore, (1830-1908) editor, lawyer, judge, and Colonel of the 4th Tenn Cavalry CSA. 1 He subdivided his farm into Hard Bargain in 1873. His Franklin home was on West Main until he moved to Murfreesboro to join a law practice with his son-in-law John E. Richardson. 1 Enlisted as a 1st Lt (age 31) on Oct 30, 1861. Promoted to Col. April 7, 1864. 1 Captured May 9, 1865 in Washington, GA. Signed the Oath 5/31/65. 1 Cited for gallant & meritorious service for actions at Thompsons Station, Chickamauga & Dandridge. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin and Nashville. Fair complexion | Dark hair | Blue eyes | 510.

George L Neely, Company D, 32nd TN Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Enlisted Nov 5, 1862 at Murfreesboro 1 Record shows he was discharged Nov 18, 62 for disability.

George M Neely, Company D/H, 32nd TN Infantry, C.S.A.

1 Enlisted Dec 11, 1861 as a Pvt. 1 Captured at Fort Donelson (Co H) Feb 16, 1862. 1 Nov 20, 1862 was discharged in Murfreesboro for being under the age of 18.

James Dickinson Park, Co B, 11th TN Cavalry

1 James D. Park was the son of Dr. J.S. Park and after the war was a lawyer. He is buried in Rest Haven.
1 Did not find data in Fold3.com, confirmed in CWD 1 The 11th TN Cav saw action in skirmishes in mid TN, Stones River, Thompson's Station, Franklin (63), Chickamauga, the Atlanta campaign, Franklin (64) and Nashville.

Lt Col. Thomas H. Peebles, 24th Tennessee Infantry

1 Mustered in June 29, 1861 as Captain, age 39. 1 Scant records but was elected Lt Col. Aug 6, 1861. Dropped May 14, 62. 1 Commanded at Shiloh. 1 The 24th TN was part of Strahls Brigade, Cheathams Div., Hardees Corps, AOT 1 The 24th was engaged at Franklin and Nashville.

Nicholas Edwin Perkins, Co D Douglass Bat., 11th Tennessee Cavalry

1 Enlisted Oct 10, 1862 in Murfreesboro, age 41, as a Pvt in Co D. 1 Captured Jan 31 in Middleton, TN; and at Pulaski July 16. paroled 18 July 1863. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin and Nashville.

Lived at Meeting of the Waters.

Jonathan Jordan Puryear, Co G 11th Tennessee Cavalry

1 Military records are sketchy at best. 1 Was likely personally engaged at Franklin and Nashville.

Dr. Fielding P Sloan, Surgeon . Company D, 5th Tennessee Cav

1 F.P. Sloan enlisted Feb 14, 1862 in Cleveland, TN.., with Company I. By March 64 he was with Co D. 1 Dr. Sloan was fatally wounded in the Battle of Franklin but didn't die until June 19, 1865 in the home of J.B. McEwen on Fair Street. 1 His brother was Flavel Baxter who served in the 5th TN Cav but lived until 1921. 1 He is buried in the McEwen lot at Rest Haven.

1833 - 1865

Dr. James Duvall Wallis, Co B, 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery

1 Enlisted Oct 1, 1861 as a Pvt in Little Rock. 1 Captured at Vicksburg, July 4, 1863 and paroled. 1 Dr. J.D. Wallis was the son-in-law of Dr. J.S. Park of Franklin.
The WCHS pic says he was a surgeon, but I can not verify that.

Edmund Pettus Winston, Company G, 13th Tennessee Infantry

1 Enlisted March 8, 1862 at LaGrange, TN., as a Pvt into Co L.
1 Transferred to Co G in Oct 62. 1 Discharged Feb 23, 1863. 1 He would seen action at Belmont, Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Stones River. 1 The 13th was at Franklin and Nashville.

Tilman H. Atkeison, Co C, 1st TN Infantry

1 Enlisted May 25, 1861 at age 24 as a Pvt. Like many of his comrades, Atkeison re-enlisted in late April 1862, after Shiloh. 1 The Nov/Dec muster sheet shows he was promoted to Captain in the QM dept in Knoxville. 1 It is likely that Atkeison saw action throughout the war in the following campaigns: Seven Pines, Perryville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mtn, Atlanta and Franklin.

Harden Perkins Cochrane Company D, 2nd Alabama Cavalry

1 Enlisted May 17, 1862 for three years in Tuscaloosa as a Pvt in Company D. 1 The 2nd Cav saw action in Florida, Miss., Griersons Raid, battle of Atlanta, and Greensboro.

James Crowner, Co K, 28th Tennessee Infantry

Also known as 2nd Mountain TN
1 Mustered in Aug 6, 1861 at Camp Zollicoffer 1 His records are scanty but he may have seen action at Shiloh, the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin and Nashville.

Corpl Charles A. Leffingwell, Co E, 28th Miss Cav

1 Mustered into Capt C.R. Maysons Company of Cavalry, Starkes Regiment, Miss Vols at age 24, enrolling at Prentiss, Miss., on March 10, 1862 as a 2nd Corpl. He signed on for 3 years.

1 He is listed as deserting 1 July 1863. He was detailed on scout duty in the early part of 1863.
1 He was also apparently a musician. 1 He was captured as a POW in Columbia, Tenn on Nov 28, 1863. Spent time at Rock Island Ill., prison. 1 In mid Dec 63 he was forwarded for exchange to Louisville.

John A. Lunn, Co C, 11th Tennessee Cav

1 Enlisted Nov 24, 1863. and deserted on his one year anniversary instead of reenlisting. 1 Took oath of allegiance in Jan 1865, having deserted Nov 25, 1864, thus just missing Franklin-Nashville. 1 From Maury Co, Tenn. 1 Fair complexion | Brown hair | Blue eyes | 57
