We have gone over the basics of the system in the previous Issues. In this discussion we will look at a randomly chosen tongue from our database and discuss as though we were on grand rounds. We will also teach an exercise in creating an element specific tongue. This will give you a hands-on feel of the system: Here is a unique tongue. What are the 3 most salient features? Once you have decided to any extent, turn to the next page for an explanation.

Expert Tongue Diagnosis, in the Acu-Free.Com tradition is a vital short cut to the long road to diagnosis. It identifies distinct discolorations and blemishes on sectors on the tongue which are intimately connected to elements, organs and the 3 Warmers.

Discussion: 1. The foremost feature is the midline fissure on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue. Check the collection of striking Damp in fissure. If it is gray or colorless, this is just Damp. If yellowish or greenish there is tendency to Heat 2. The second feature is the flabbiness of tongue mass. 3. The third feature is some redness at tip and papillae on anterior 1/3rd of the tongue also showing Heat. Note also the almost complete lack of coat.

Apparently this is an Earth Afflicted tongue because of the typical fissure with marked Damp and no coat There is Heat in the Upper Warmer as that shows in anterior 1/3. The papillae mean the Heat is pronounced. Now we have to decide if this condition is Earth Injured all by itself or has another element injured it. A significant Injury by another element can only be by Liver Wood as that is the natural Controller. As there are no problems at sides of tongue LV is not indicated. That leaves us with the the conclusion this is an essential Earth Afflicted tongue with Heat. One would refine this with supporting face color, body and pulse diagnostics. Treatment would revolve around supporting Earth [ST 36, SP 4, SP 6, REN 12,

How to construct a tongue with Diagnostic sectors in 5 easy steps:

Step 1
Anatomical root of tongue

Draw an ellipse as shown; this is the anatomical tongue Divide tongue into thirds; posterior 1/3 has no diagnostic sensitivity. This is the part not seen on examination.

Acu-free.Com LLC. All rights reserved. Protected by Federal Copyright Laws.

Of the anterior, visible and element-sensitive 2/3, draw 4 horizontal lines to divide into 5 equal horizontal parts: The posterior 1/5 belongs to K

The middle 3/5 to ST

The anterior 1/5 to HT & LU

Anatomical tip of tongue

Step 2

Now drop 3 vertical lines in anterior 2/3: Of the 4 vertical sub sectors formed, the 2 on the sides belong to LV

The rectangular area in middle to ST

The anterior 1/5 to HT & LU, see Step 3.

Copyright: acufree.com LLC. All rights reserved. For educational purpose only. http://www.acu-free.com

Step 3

Acu-free.Com LLC. All rights reserved. Protected by Federal Copyright Laws.

Now in the anterior 1/5 place 3 small circles, 2 on either side of the median, and one where it meets the tip of tongue. The pair marks area where LU resides, one at tip, where HT is seen

Step 4

And lets take away surplus lines and replace with elemental areas. Note that we have changed the line between the posterior insensitive 1/3 and anterior 2/3 with what you would really see there, a line of taste sensitive papillae Also note: SP is found at underside of anterior 1/3 of tongue, not visible in these images.

Step 5

Posterior 1/3 with no elemental qualities

ST LV

Now see recognizable sectors on tongue in health: K is a shallow trough LV is at the sides which are not prominent ST is a round well marked central area with no fissures LU is usually a pair of small troughs or unseen HT is an area at tip with minor redness, no papillae, no fissure

Step 6

Posterior 1/3 with no elemental qualities

And in illness, please note there can be many variations: K becomes a deepened trough with grayish Damp or Dryness, Damp more serious than Dryness as it comes from ST the natural Controller LV: rolled up reddish sides, with crenellations, small vertical fissures ST: central area with fissures with Damp, sometimes with redness and with no coat LU: a pair of small troughs, at times as fine fissures HT: tip with pronounced redness and papillae; when there is central fissure reaching tip, this is a serious problem; at this time see area at Yin Tang between eyebrows, if marked redness there, a HT malady is strongly indicated

THE FENG SHUI DOOR WAY

THE EAST
BY

CAROL ANDRADE PHD LAC

Spring is a wonderful time to clean out your entire house, let go of the past and to work on the Eastern areas of you home or office which relate to the issues of family and health. In classical Feng Shui the Eastern area of any house or office is the home of the AZURE DRAGON and the most healing location in any structure. This is also the area where the health of a family and all of its relationships are nurtured and supported. Make sure that the East area of any room, home or office is always sparkling clean, and full of fresh air and green, healthy, plants. Research indicates, that due to the way homes have been built in the past, indoor pollutants and stagnation can actually be higher inside, than outside. Use plants to protect your self from indoor pollution. They eat up destructive air pollutants and exhale fresh clean oxygen.

The season spring, the issue of family and health, and the element of water, all relate to the direction EAST.

Verify what kind of ventilation you have in the East. Are there any windows, doors, air vents? Make sure they are clean, and that nothing blocks this area, so that the energy of the East is welcomed into your living or working area. If there are drapes, have them cleaned in the spring. If paint is chipping, give it a fresh coat. If you have boxes, or furniture blocking the area, make a point to clear this up. If you have a bathroom door,or closet that you leave open and which steals all of that great healing family and health energy, do what you can to keep the doors closed, and any blocking or stagnant energy from destroying the energy of the East. If your bathroom is in the East, relocate it if you can, or use the other elements in this article to help you keep the area as clean and healthy as possible. Remember that you dont want to flush away all health and family luck.

The East is the place for fresh water, bubbling aquariums, fountains, pools, or just fresh flowers. It is not a place for dried flowers or dead plants, as this endangers the growing healthy energy that you are working to create. Gardens can be grown outside in the East. Green trees and landscaping that you can see from an East window can contribute to your health. If instead you look at garbage areas, dangerous looking rocks or harsh landscapes use foliage to soften that energy. The East is considered the area for children. The energy should be soft, slow and meandering. No sharp edges, heavy stones, metal objects or cutting energy. The sun rises in the East, so this is a good place to exercise and welcome the sun in with yoga poses. An Acupuncture Diagnosis of Marilyn Monroes Insomnia & Mental Instability in Her Most Productive Years in Hollywood
Vera Kaikobad L. Ac. Director www.Acupuncture-CEUs.com

In this article, we will attempt to create a clinical profile of Marilyn Monroes insomnia and her well-publicized mental issues by using the Five Element Patterns and System and create a protocol that could have helped her. This System is based on the Fiftieth Difficult Issue in the Nan Ching Classic, which identifies two elements in a warring relationship. By this System, simply from reported symptoms and signs of any case, one can arrive at a dependable diagnosis and treatment protocol.

arilyn Monroe. Just the name conjures up images of ethereal beauty and glamour. When

her fans saw her, they saw a woman of unsurpassed allure, and an aura of fantasy surrounded her whenever she graced the silver screen. A natural comic, she was born for the silver screen. Coming from a broken home, Norma Jean, as was her real name, had a mentally unstable mother named Gladys Baker Pearl, who would suffer multiple nervous breakdowns and scream and cry at the same time. She would not allow young Norma Jean to be adopted into a stable home, thwarting numerous attempts by good homes to do so, and therefore, Norma kept bouncing from foster home to foster home, with very little emotional stability or peace in her early life.

Marilyn Monroes Principal Health Issues According to The 5 Element Pattern System

Norma Jean at Age 19

As her career took off, Marilyn's health deteriorated during the 1950s, and she began to consult a Los Angeles psychiatrist named Dr. Ralph Greenson. He later stated that while under his treatment, she always complained of an inability to sleep, and confided in him that she saw a number of doctors to get what Dr. Greenson thought was an overly heavy dose of a variety of drugs and sleep medication. He thought that addiction was a very real and dangerous possibility for her, but also understood that she could give up the drugs for long periods without suffering any withdrawal symptoms. Insomnia usually points to problems with the Fire/Water Axis with Kidney Yin Deficiency issues. When Water Qi Flourishes, sleep is normal; when Water Qi Diminishes, sleep is compromised. Water is the Destroyer of Fire, and the bi-elemental Pattern, Water Element Destroying Fire Element is reaffirmed. Refining the Five Element pattern: Mental illness is to be found on the Fire Element where it shows symptoms but has as its cause the Overly control by the Water Element. The offending Element would thus be Water.

Death by Drug Overdose at Age 36

As the months went by, Marilyn's dependence on alcohol and prescription medications began to take a toll on her health, and personal friends such as Susan Strasberg later spoke of her illness. In February of 1961, the year after her divorce from author Arthur Miller, she voluntarily entered the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic, an experience she described as a "nightmare". Marilyn phoned ex-husband but good friend Joe DiMaggio from that clinic to come and have her shifted, and he immediately traveled from Florida to New York to get her transferred to the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. She stayed there for three weeks. Illness prevented her from working for the remainder of the year; she underwent surgery to correct a blockage in her Fallopian tubes in May, and the following month underwent gallbladder surgery. She returned to California and lived in an apartment as she attempted to get back on her feet health-wise. A blockage in the Fallopian tubes points to irregularities with the lower burner (Jiao) and Kidney Channel, while Gall Bladder surgery tells us that her Wood Channel was calling out for attention: Wood Yang was flaring. When ones Shen is unanchored and adrift to that degree, one can say that the Fire and Water Axis may be the principle etiologic factor involved, with complications on Wood.

Discussion and Acupuncture Point Selection

The Five Element Pattern System, which has been presented for Marilyn Monroe is primarily that of Water Yin Deficient and Fire Afflicted. It would seem that the Kidney Channel requires a special examination, so in order to reinforce the Water Element, one would choose these points: To treat the Fire/Water Axis Pattern, one would choose these points: To harmonize Kidney Yin: We would have reinforced these points: Kidney 3 (Taixi) Shu Stream, Yuan Source and Earth Point for Kidney Channel Urinary Bladder 58 (Feiyang) Luo Connecting Point for the Bladder Channel Urinary Bladder 23 (Shenshu) on the left side Back Shu Point of the Kidneys To harmonize Heart Yin & Qi: We would have reinforced these points: Heart 7 (Shenmen) Shu-Stream, Yuan Source and Earth Point for Heart Vessel Small Intestine 5 (Yanggu) Jing-River and Fire Point of the Small Intestine Channel Urinary Bladder 15 (Xinshu) on left the side Back Shu Point for Heart Qi To strengthen general health and augment resistance to alcohol: We would have reinforced these points: Stomach 36 (Zusanli) He-Sea and Earth Point for the Stomach Channel Spleen 6 (Sanyinjiao) Meeting Point for Kidney, Spleen and Liver Channels Ren 17 (Shanzhong) Front Mu Point for Pericardium, Meeting Point of the Conception Vessel with Spleen, Kidney, Sanjiao and Small Intestine Channels

Copyright: acufree.com LLC. All rights reserved. For educational purpose only. http://www.acu-free.com

Reinforcing all the above with Auriculo-Therapy Points: We would have reinforced these points: Kidney point in the left ear Heart point on the left ear Liver point on the right ear Shenmen point bilaterally Deep Sleep Point on whichever ear shows most tenderness Drunk Point on whichever ear shows most tenderness Interviewed by Richard Meryman for Life magazine, Marilyn said: "You have to start all over again. But I believe you're always as good as your potential. I now live in my work and in a few relationships with the few people I can really count on. Fame will go by, and, so long, I've had fame. If it goes by, I've always known it was fickle. So at least it's something I experienced, but that's not where I live. Hollywood is a place with theyll pay you a million dollars for a kiss, and one cent for your soul."

The Passing of a Hollywood Legend and the Health Problems Surrounding Her Death
On August 5, 1962, screen legend Marilyn Monroe was found deceased at her home in LA, California. She was only 36 years old. After the autopsy, many drugs were found in her body and according to the toxicology report, eight mg percent of Chloral Hydrate and 4.5 milligram percent of Nembutal were found in her body, and Dr. Thomas Noguchi of the Los Angeles County Coroners office recorded cause of death as "acute barbiturate poisoning," resulting from a "probable suicide.

Copyright: acufree.com LLC. All rights reserved. For educational purpose only. http://www.acu-free.com

If we would have had a chance, we would have given Marilyn regular acupuncture sessions, twice weekly, concentrating on her mental balance, insomnia and grief management (her many unsuccessful marriages must have taken their toll on her delicate nerves). If there was a lot of alcohol consumed then this vice would have affected her Wood LV/GB Channel. However, the Will Power is in the grasp of the Shen, and the Shen is in the grasp of Heart, while Heart is in the grasp of Kidney, so that all this seems to reaffirm the contention that the Fire (Heart) Water (Kidney) Axis was extremely unstable.

In conclusion, there was the Marilyn Monroe of the silver screen who won the heart of millions around the world. Men pined away for her. Women envied her and emulated her every fashion choice. And then there was young Norma Jean, whose own mother once forced her in a large duffle bag and zipped her up, when a friend saw what was happening and ran into the house and saved Norma Jeans life. What a trauma she must have borne from that one incident in her teens, inflicted upon her by her own mother. Some say she committed suicide. Others tell us it was an overdose of sleeping pills. The world is left to wonder what it would have been like had she received the proper treatment, guidance and friendship at the right time in the various phases of her life. What would have happened had she lived? A performer who gave happiness to millions, died alone in her bedroom in her LA apartment, with not a soul to share her sadness with. We thank Marilyn for her contributions to the motion picture industry, but more importantly, the author thanks the young girl Norma Jean for letting us use her life and its various tragic vicissitudes to help us study the many faces of Acupuncture. Thank you, Norma Jean. You were so fragile, so misunderstood. You will be missed. References: Churchwell, Sarah (2004). The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe. Metropolitan Books. Clayton, Marie (2004). Instant Recognition of Clinical Images

By Dr. Holmes Keikobad MBBS DPH Ret Dip AC NCCAOM L AC

Often after years of work, in terms of images, one develops a certain storehouse of information one can access in any given case and come up with an instant diagnosis. If you are in a teaching environment and see a large number of cases this can happen earlier. Instant diagnosis means one look and you already have an idea of the bi elemental profile which a history and examination will confirm. Whereby the treatment, which is the child of the diagnostic pattern. All in one neat package. Here are some images which are connected to illness patterns. See if you can track down the basic pathology. Dont be in a hurry to see next page which has the answers, look over things best as you can and make a mental note. 1. Image of skin of arm:
