Design the roof slab for a singled building of clear dimensions 3.25m x 7.5m with wall thickness 300mm. Assume that access is provided to the roof. A weathering course of thickness 120mm and unit weight 17.5kN/m3 is to be provided over the slab. Use M 20 and Fe 415 steel. Draw the cross section of the slab showing the reinforcement details. (a) (b) How will the problem be solved if the point of application of the load and the centre of gravity of the section do not coincide? Design a short column 25 cm square in cross-section for an axial load of 400 kN, and moments of 30kNm and 30kNm about the two axes. Draw the drawings showing the design details. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 X 14 marks)

(a) A R.C rectangular beam of M20 grade concrete is 300mm wide and 600mm deep (overall).it is reinforced with 3 numbers of 20mm dia. Mild steel bars in the tension zone with an effective cover of 40mm. Determine the moment of resistance of the section by using working stress method (b) The mid span section of a simply supported rectangular RC beam is subjected to a maximum bending moment of 30kN-m. The breadth and effective depth of the section are 250mm and 450mm respectively. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. For design of beam use working stress method (a) i) Define characteristic strength. ii) Determine the mean target strength required for the mix design of M25 concrete, assuming moderate quality control. Why is cube strength different from the cylinder strength for the same grade of concrete? What is the affect of amount of compression reinforcement on the deflection due to: (a) shrinkage and (b) creep Design a square footing for a rectangular column 300mm x 500mm, reinforced with 6-25 bars, and carrying a service load of 1250kN. Assume soil with an allowable pressure of 200kN/m2 at a depth of 1.25m below ground. Assume Fe415 grade steel for both column and footing, and M20 grade concrete for the footing and M25 grade concrete for the column.

The floor slab of hall 12m x 6m (centre line measurement) is supported by T-beams and L-beams at 3m centers. The beams are supported by 300mm x 300mm size RC columns. Live load on the slab 2 2 2.5kN/m . Weight of floor finish is 1.1kN/m . Thickness of slab is 120mm. Design the mid span section of the end beam using M20 grade concrete and mild steel grade. Taking the bending moment coefficients for mid spans moments as 1/9 for live load and 1/12 for dead load. Keep the breadth of web and overall depth of the beam as 300mm and 500mm respectively. The thickness and height of masonry wall resting on the beam are 200mm and 2.6m respectively. Design a slender circular column of 35mm diameter with the following data: Unsupported length = 8m Effective length = 5m Axial load = 500kN Moment at top= 60kNm Moment at bottom= 40kNm The column bends in double curvature. Draw the drawings showing the design details. Part B (Answer any three questions, 3 X 14 marks)

(a) Explain briefly the I.S. code specifications regarding

A simply supported RC beam of 300mm x 600mm overall size and M25 grade concrete carrying an all inclusive udl of 30kN/m over 7 m span. It is reinforced with 6bars of 16mm dia. Fe415 grade steel at its mid span in the tension zone with a clear cover of 25mm and 4 numbers of 16mm dia bars in the 0 compression zone. Two of the tension bars are bent-up at 45 and taken to the top near the supports. i.) Determine the spacing of 8mm dia. Mild steel stirrups required near the supports. ii.)Determine the spacing of same stirrups required near the supports when no bar is cranked

Design a footing for a 35cm square column reinforced with 8-20mm Fe 415 grade bars. One side of the footing is restricted to 1.5m. The gross bearing capacity of the soil is 65kN/m2. Assume column concrete as M25 and footing concrete as M20. An office floor has intermediate spans of RCC slab supported on steel beams at 3m. The span of steel beams is 6m centers. If the slab is required to carry a live load of 3000N/sq. m., design slab by using M 20 grade and Fe 415 grade steel.

The critical section of an RC rectangular beam is subjected to a bending moment of 25kNm, a Torsional moment of 10kNm and a shear force of 30kN. The overall size of the section is 300mm x 600mm. Provide effective cover to reinforcement as 40 mm. concrete grades M20 and steel grade Fe415 are used. Design the necessary reinforcements for the section. Draw the drawings showing the design details. Design a short column, with effect length 3.0m, capable of safety resisting the following factored loads effects (under uniaxial eccentricity): (i) Pu=1625kN,Mu=75kNm (ii.)Pu=365kN,Mu=198kNm. Assume M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Draw the drawings showing the design details.

(a) Explain normal mix concrete. (b) Design a singly reinforced simply supported rectangular beam to carry an imposed load of 16kN/m using M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 HYSD reinforcement. The clear distance between the supporting walls is 4.0m and their width is 200mm. Use working stress method. (a) Describe with sketches T and L beams and indicate their principal components. (b) A RC floor slab of 120mm thick is supported by T-beam at 3 m intervals c/c. The slab carries a total superimposed load of 3.5kN/m2 in addition to its self weight. The effective span of Tbeams is 9m. Design the beam using M25 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel. (a) Explain the term limit state design. (b) Justify the code specification for the limiting neutral axis depth in LSM. Design a plain concrete footing for a column, 400mm x 400mmmm, carrying an axial load of 400kN. Assume an allowable soil pressure of 350kN/m2 at a depth of 1m below the ground. Assume M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. Design a simply supported two way slab for the roof of a room of clear dimensions 3m x 3m using M25 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel. The corners are not prevented from lifting. Width of supporting walls alround is 230mm. Live load on the slab is 1.5kN/m2. Weight of weathering course is 1.75kN/m2. What are the recommendations of IS code for control of crack-width in RC members? *****

Design and detail a reinforced concrete square isolated footing for a column of size 700 x 500 mm carrying a axial service load of 3000 KN inclusive of its own weight .The test borings and plate load test indicate that soil is composed of medium compacted and gravelly sands with the safe bearing capacity at the level of the footing base as 250 kn/m2.Use M25 and Fe 415 Sketch the details showing the design

The assembly hall floor in a club building at first floor is to be constructed in reinforced concrete. The size of a hall is 7m x 6m. In order to provide a plain ceiling effect in the ground floor, the slab is to be laid without the provisions of the beams. The slab is to be finished with 25mm thick mosaic flooring to the super-imposed loads. Draw a dimensioned plan and section of the slab, showing the position of reinforcement.

List out some of the merits and demerits of RCC when compared with other building materials. Explain with neat sketches the simplified procedure for the curtailment of tension reinforcement in simply supported beams and cantilever beams.

Draw the experimental and design stress strain curves using a partial safety factor of 1.15 for (a) Mild steel bars of grade Fe 250 and (b) HYSD bars of grade Fe 415. Differentiate between the terms factor of safety and partial safety factors for material strength.
A simply supported beam of an effective span 8 m is subjected to an uniformly distributed live load of 20 kN/m. And of moving load of 100kN .design a singly reinforced T- beam using M20 concrete and HYSD-Fe415 bars. The width and the thickness of the flange are restricted to 1000 and 200 mm respectively.

A cantilever slab of span 3 m and 200 m thickness is made of M20 concrete and 16mm HYSDFe415 bars spaced at 200mm a part at 40mm from the top fibers. The slab is subjected to dead load of 3kN/m2 and the live load of 4kN/m2.shrinkage is assumed as 0.0003.Determine the deflections caused by loads, shrinkage and creep coefficient of 1.6. Compute the total deflections and check whether the total deflection is less than span/250. (a) What is the main difference, in terms of structural behavior, between a short column

and a slender column? (b) Design the reinforcement in a column of size 250mm x 500mm, with an unsupported length of 5.0m, subjected to a factored axial load of 1200kN.Assume the column to be braced, and pinned at both ends in both end directions. Assume M25 concrete and Fe415 steel, and design by Strength reduction coefficient method.
