Despite light rain showers, a good-sized crowd turned out donning umbrellas to welcome Santa along the parade route on Wall Street (below). The parade also featured entries in the third annual ice shanty contest and a participant decorated as a Christmas tree (right). Following the parade, children had a chance to visit with Santa at the Depot Museum. SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-REVIEW

___________

The art and artistry of Jeanne Kuhns will be showcased Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in the Northwoods. This vibrant and passionate woman will perform her music in concert with her band, Lost Mothra, in the art center theater and display a sampling of her acrylic paintings in the gallery there. Kuhns, voted best female vocalist in 2008 by Door County Magazine, will be performing Christmas music, familiar songs and original compositions. Her music is poetic, socially aware and lyrical. She is frequently compared to Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Allison Krause and others. I guess I sound a little different depending on the style of the song Im singing, said Kuhns. Im probably a mix of all these amazing women as they have all influenced me so. Kuhns was born in Madison and moved with her family to Illinois at age 5. Living in Prospect Heights, she enjoyed innocent years of bike riding and playing in the fields and by the creek. In school one day, she was pretending to be an opera singer when she heard someone comment on her voice. She liked that and so began her musical journey. Her dad loved music and took pride in his sound system, which his young daughter also enjoyed. I liked to lie on the floor and feel the vibrations of the music coming through my body, Kuhns recalled. In eighth grade, she and a friend performed Halls of Ivy at graduation. She joined the chorus in high school and soon moved up to an elite group ensemble. Kuhns joined summer stock productions in Barrington, Ill., and by the time she went to college, she was performing in folk festivals. Kuhns grandmother was very influential in her life. She was an oil painter, loved animals, cared about social issues and had a mystical approach to human perception, instinct and insight. Kuhns has carried all of these interests into her adult life. My music and artwork are so connected. Its all related to how I perceive the world, she said. Performing music is more communal. Writing music and painting are more solitary and a place of rest for me. Zoology was Kuhns chosen major in college at the University of Montana-Missoula. Her goal was veterinary medicine and she enjoyed working with vets and learned a great deal. Getting into veterinary school was

Santa to visit childrens museum

Santa will visit the Northwoods Childrens Museum (NCM) Saturday, Dec. 3, from noon until 1 p.m. He is ready to hear the Christmas wishes of all boys and girls and will have a treat for each child who visits him. As in the past, Santa will taste a variety of cookies to decide which is his favorite. He will announce his favorite and settle into the museums magical chair to visit with each child. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the event will include holiday craft workshops at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cookies and milk will be served to children in the Celebration Room. Participants may make a holiday wreath from a mixture of evergreen boughs with an easy-to-use wire wreath form. Making wreaths has become a traditional activity here at the museum, said Operations Coordinator Casey Vold. There are several families that come in every year to make a wreath together. They often strive to improve from the previous year. The cost to make a wreath is $25 if a wreath form is needed or $20 if participants take their form from previous years. Pinecones and bows will be provided. Additional accessories may be taken in for that personal touch. Other holiday crafts that can be made during workshop times will include mini gingerbread houses, candy cane vases, photo frames, candle holders and more. Materials costs for these crafts, which can be gifts for parents and grandparents, range from $1 to $15. The museum will highlight a Chinese holiday theme throughout December. By highlighting the holiday celebrations of an ethnic group, we hope people will learn some interesting and fun facts that will help them understand a different culture, said Vold. Museum admission is $7 per person. For more information, contact the museum at (715) 4794623 or ncm.er@frontier.com or visit northwoodschildrensmuseum.com.

especially difficult for women at that time and Kuhns quit. Ive always had some regrets that I didnt follow that path, she said. Later in her life, she did go on to receive an associate degree in nursing and now works 30 hours a week at the Wellness Center of Door County, which gives her great pride. The center is non-profit, comprehensive and holistic in nature, and the only independent, nurse-managed clinic in northeastern Wisconsin. Kuhns traveled around the country after college, living in Montana, California and Minnesota. She was married and had two sons and a daughter. Her husband was a musician, but discouraged his young wifes musical ambition. He wanted to go back to school and the family moved to Green Bay in 1991. They ultimately divorced. Kuhns stayed in Wisconsin, raised her children and put down deep roots in Door County. My children are the light of my life, Kuhns said. They share their moms love of music and all have talent. Kuhns son, Eli Mattson, was runner-up on the 2008 season of the television show Americas Got Talent. Mattson performed at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts last June and is currently living in Florida with a newly formed band and a new single on ITunes. My son Jacob is a singer/songwriter and a cook, living in Egg Harbor. My daughter, Mary, is a singer/songwriter from Jacksonport and recording her first full length CD, said a proud Kuhns. Kuhns was the originator of the Woodwalk Concert Series, now in its eighth year. She started it in Jacksonport

at the Town Hall Bakery, but it is now held at the Woodwalk Gallery and Events barn just north of Sturgeon Bay. The 1890s historic barn is home to the contemporary art of 30 regional artists and resident artist Margaret Lockwood. Kuhns continues to book the Friday night summer concerts in which she sometimes appears solo, or with her band, Lost Mothra, or with other groups. Kuhns has recently moved her own gallery, The Lost Moth Gallery, to Egg Harbor from Sturgeon Bay. She and her brother are preparing it for next year and she will at last have a separate studio. She is living there as well, with her two Australian shepherd rescue dogs, Matisse and Mocha. So what is the story regarding Kuhns choice of names for her Lost Mothra Band and Lost Moth Gallery? Kuhns explained, When I was a child, I really enjoyed the movies about Godzilla. Godzilla and his opponents were an explanation by the Japanese of possible effects on the natural world from the radiation left behind by the atomic bomb. The giant Mothra, with characteristics of both butterflies and moths, is both fierce and benevolent, not unlike Kuhns herself. Kuhns has four compact discs and a new CD coming out, her first with the band. It has a good batch of new songs, she said. I want to be a better artist and to keep recording and performing. Hopefully, these will keep me afloat when I retire. Its hard to imagine Kuhns retiring. Her passion for life will keep her afloat and going strong for many years to come. Tickets for Jeanne Kuhns

and Lost Mothra are $10 each. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. Dec. 10, featuring a mix of holiday music, progressive folk, infused with jazz, blues and rock. Tickets are available at the theater at 1760 Superior St. or by calling to reserve at (715) 546-2299. The members of my band are George Sawyn, a stunning classical/jazz/rock guitarist, with over 25 years experience in the Chicago music scene, Kuhns said. My bass player, Patrick Palmer, is one of Door Countys finest bass players and has accompanied some of the best bluegrass bands in the country. Im a lucky girl! Sommer to discuss mining at Many Ways of Peace

Mining for the Truth in the Penokee Hills will be the topic of a presentation by Eagle River attorney Susan Sommer Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at Many Ways of Peace, located at 217 S. Main St. in downtown Eagle River. The Penokee-Gogebic Range is located between Hurley and Mellen on the edge of the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest. According to Sommer, its also where one of the largest private mining companies in the nation wants to dig a 4.5-milewide open-pit iron ore mine that stretches for 22 miles. Sommer said that when she learned about the proposed mine, she started to research the issue because she wanted to understand the impact of taconite mining to the land. My husband and I moved home to northern Wisconsin for the very reason that it is beautiful here peaceful, quiet, pristine. I want to know as much as I can about mining so that I can make a wellinformed decision on any position I take regarding proposed mines in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, said Sommer. The Cline Group, which is headquartered in Florida, has secured an option to obtain the mineral rights held for this property and has created a subsidiary called Gogebic Taconite to move forward with the mining of iron ore. I intend to cover several topics during my presentation, including the move to change our states mining legislation, the history of mining in Wisconsin, the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) permitting process, water quality and quantity standards, and the potential impacts of taconite mining to the land and waters, Sommer said. I will also have a list of resources to share with the audience so other folks can become informed, pursue their own research and, ultimately, make a well-informed decision about the reality of mining in our state. For more information, visit manywaysofpeace.org, or call Debra Ketchum Jircik, director, at (715) 480-4697.

Instead they are on a plane to China, India, Australia, England and many other places thousands of miles from here. They think nothing of it. At this point in time, we can order Christmas gifts from any country on the planet with just the click of a keyboard button. Hopefully, however, we will choose to shop at local stores and support our neighbors. With the world shrinking, one would think language would be a problem, but if a page on the Internet appears in German, a click of the button translates it to English. English is also becoming the world language. For those times when travelers find themselves among people who do not speak English, I came across a little

high-tech toy that one speaks into and out comes the English sentence in whatever language you choose. Easy way to order food, ask directions and more when in a foreign land. So the world is indeed shrinking. The next step is learning how to get along with everyone else. When will we look at those we meet and wish them well instead of making judgments about them? When will we accept all people of all races, religions, economic status and philosophy? High tech has its pluses, but it wont help us love someone if we do not choose to do so. On the other hand, we could really create oneness on this planet by choosing to accept all people everywhere. What a perfect way to live. On the Nicolet Theatre stage, each two-person team will have one hour to prepare three dishes an appetizer or salad, entre and dessert. Tree of Love ceremonies to be held in the North Woods next week

For more than two decades, Dr. Kate Hospice has joined with the community to welcome the holidays with an evening of memories, fellowship and sharing at the Tree of Love ceremony. In 2008, its partner hospice program in Rhinelander, Ministry Home Care, began a similar tradition. These gatherings are a way to recognize the pain that exists in the hearts of many after a death, and to celebrate the memories that last. The trees will remain lit throughout the holidays as a reminder that those who have lived have left a lasting impression. Everyone is welcome to both of these events. In Rhinelander, the fourth annual Tree of Love ceremony will be held Monday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m. at the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce with music and homemade refreshments. In Woodruff, the 23rd annual Dr. Kate Hospice Tree of Love ceremony will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. The tree will be dedicated at a memorial celebration outside the Ministry Medical Group clinic on the north side of Howard Young Medical Center. Music will be provided by the Lakeland Area Barbershop Chorus. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome to join together for conversation and fellowship in the lobby. No registration is required to attend either of these free t r e e - l i g h t i n g c e r e m o n i e s. Everyone is welcome to join in the fellowship.
