Summary Theprojectfocusedontransformingtheknowledgeintensityandscientificcomplexitiesofsite specificnutrientmanagement(SSNM)intoeasytousedecisiontoolsandvideosforextension workers,cropadvisors,andfarmers.Nutrientmanagementdecisionsupportsoftwareentitled NutrientManagerforRiceinthePhilippinesandentitledPemupukanPadiSawahSpesifikLokasi (LocationSpecificRiceFertilization)inIndonesiaweredistributedwithtrainingthroughouteach countryonCDinthelocallanguage.Eachconsistsof10to15questionseasilyansweredbyan extensionworkerandfarmer.Basedonresponsestothequestions,afieldspecificguideline withamountsoffertilizerrequiredbycropgrowthstageisprovidedtoenablefarmersto increasetheirprofitbyapplyingtherightamountoffertilizerattherighttimetotheirfield. InthePhilippines,NutrientManagerforRicewasalsoreleasedasawebversion (www.irri.org/nmrice).ThedecisiontoolwasusedinthePhilippinestodevelopprovince specificquickguidesonfertilizingrice,whichwerereleasedandpromotedbytheDepartment ofAgriculturein75provinces(www.pinoyrkb.com/resources).Avideoforfarmersentitled ProperNutritionMakesHealthyRicePlantswasdevelopedanddistributedinthePhilippinesvia CDandtheinternet(www.pinoyrkb.com/resources).AnothervideowasdevelopedinBahasa IndonesiaanddistributedviaCDandtheinternetinIndonesia. ExperiencesfromthePhilippinesandIndonesiawithdecisiontools,videos,andquickguides foracceleratingtheuptakeofnutrientbestmanagementserveasamodelforreplicationwith rice,maize,andwheatacrossAsia.Initialversionsofsixnewdecisionsupportsoftwarewere developedinresponsetorequestsfromnationalandinternationalorganizations.Asof December2009,decisiontoolsforprovidingfieldspecificbestnutrientmanagementwere underfieldtestingandverificationforwheatinIndia,maizeinBangladesh,andricein Bangladesh,China,India,SriLanka,andWestAfrica.Multiinstitutionalpartnershipswithin theCerealSystemsInitiativeforSouthAsia(CSISA),theIrrigatedRiceResearchConsortium (IRRC),andtheIRRICIMMYTricemaizeprojectinBangladeshtogetherwithemergingpublic privatesectorpartnershipsacrossAsiaprovideopportunitiesforacceleratingthedevelopment, verification,dissemination,anduptakeoflocallyadaptedbestnutrientmanagementforcereals acrossAsia. Activities 1. Developdecisiontoolsfornutrientbestmanagementpracticesinricebasedsystems;and deploytoresearchers,educators,extensionpractitioners,fertilizercompanies,andpolicy makers. 2.
