For my community service, I assisted in a very important duty at a Free Medical Clinic in
West Salem. My main job was to be an interpreter; they meet at a school gym, twice a
month on Saturdays. Patients that come into the clinic were from Americans to Latinos,
to Orientals. I was able to interpret what doctors or nurses where trying to communicate
to the patients. Since the clinic is affiliated with the West Salem Foursquare Church it
The clinic wasn’t the fanciest, but many people with all types of situations attended there
for attention. As an interpreter I learned to a closer experience the job they do, there I met
Mimi who I got along with very well and experienced some corrections from her side
since she was a professional interpreter who had a mayor experience in the area.
Being the interpreter got me closer into what the clinic’s purpose to their service was, I
understood closer what the actual cause of different health issues can arrive from. As an
example, I met a men called Jesus, who as I got the chance to talk to him, he told me that
he worked on the mountain along with other employees doing the job of cutting pines just
so that he could provide for his family of about 5 children; He had attended there because
two feet away from it. I was surprised at what the men had done, I tried to picture myself,
not in his shoes….but in his position, I try to find myself doing the same for those that I
love to the point that a disease like that reaches the point where I have to find medical
help. Finally that day was a very high turning point to what he had expected, for he had
asked me to tell the nurse, while he was being questioned, that he had not visited a doctor
for 25 years at least; Jesus was found with a very high score in his blood glucose test, so
I shared to Jesus about God very little because of the time, before he had left the place I
explained to him the value of what he was doing and what it meant. He replied to me
saying: “Well, this is what I got to do so mine won’t”. That was the best experience in my
I enjoyed my service so much at that clinic that I applied to volunteer there every 1st and
3rd Saturday of the month. Thanks to Dr. Marion Reynolds I am able to attend along to
my sister to that clinic where more people go everyday and do my work in sharing and
