Enable this content

In Microsoft Excel 2003 and Excel 2000 Edition, the following Security Warning Message will automatic appear. Please click Enable Macros to Enable Macros.

Design Spreadsheet includes three worksheets, Main, Summary, and Notes. Main (or Title and Schematics) worksheet: The page where the user inputs design specifications in the blue cells and receives design result information in the yellow cells and from graphs. Summary worksheet: Results of the user-input design are shown here in table format. Notes worksheet: Blank page where user can add notes about the specifics of the design, if desired.

3.1.3 Design Power Stage Components Part I of the Design Spreadsheet helps the user to design or choose the power stage components and evaluate the performance. The design specifications entered by the user in the search page will be automatically transferred to this program. According to this design specification, the Design Spreadsheet will suggest optimized component values such as inductance and resistance for user reference. The user needs to fill in the actual component values or choose them from the component library (please see Appendix for detail). After the user chooses the actual component, the circuit design key performance parameters, such as output voltage ripple, will be calculated and displayed for the user to evaluate. Also the user can simulate the circuit performance by exporting the design to the LTspiceTM simulation tool by simply clicking the Export to LTspice button (please see Appendix for details).

Datasheet Circuit Specification

Export to LTspice Simulation

The values/descriptions in yellow background cells are calculated / recommended by the LTpowerCAD design tool. They cannot be modified by users. On the other hand, the values in blue background cells need to be entered by the user for their specific designs. In a design spreadsheet, sometimes a cell value appears in RED font. This usually means that there is a warning. The LTpowerCAD design tool often recommends the typical component values with lower/upper limits. If the value entered by the user is outside the range of LTpowerCAD design tools recommendations, the program shows related circuit values in RED as a warning. In this case, the warning does not cause any malfunction of the design tool. However, the supply designer should consider whether s/he really wants to keep the current value or follow the value recommended by the LTpowerCAD design tool.

3.1.4 Design Compensation Loop After determining the power stage components, Part II of the design sheet helps users to optimize the feedback loop design. The user can enter desired loop bandwidth and phase margin and let the program suggest the compensation network values. Or, the user can simply adjust the sliding bars for the compensation component values and check the resulting loop gain Bode Plot and load transient performance.

Control Loop Bandwidth

Predicted Load-step Response

3.1.5 Wrap-Up and Summary Once a design is complete, the Summary worksheet shows the key power component values and a list of a simple Bill-of-Materials (BOM). The Summary worksheet also helps the user to estimate the total cost and board footprint of the power train. The user could also use the Notes worksheet to record any information they want to keep.

3.2

OPEN EXISTING DESIGN

The user could open and review an existing design file by simply clicking the Open Existing Design button at the LTpowerCAD Design Tool main menu.

After the user selected an existing design file, the Design Spreadsheet will automatically start for user to review and modify.

4 UPDATE THE LTPOWERCAD DESIGN TOOL LIBRARY

Linear Technology always makes its best effort to provide the customers with the latest and the best design and analysis tool to significantly ease the customers design process. By clicking the Sync Release button at the main window, the LTpowerCAD Design Tool could automatically synchronize and download the latest supported Linear Technology Parts Library and Components Library from Internet. To help keep the design tool library current, the program will remind the user to Sync Release if the program has not been updated within the last 45 days.

Note: The users computer needs to have internet connection before using the Sync Release function. Please use the Administration account to run the LTpowerCAD Design Tool before using the Sync Release function.

5 APPENDIX
5.1 LOAD TRANSIENT PREDICTION

The design tool program provides an approximation of the output voltage overshoot/undershoot waveform during load transients. This approximation is calculated based on the average small-signal model of the power supply. Therefore, it does NOT take into consideration possible large-signal nonlinear effects that may exist in the real experimental test with a large and very fast load step. In reality, sometimes the overshoot/undershoot is higher than the small-signal estimation. Even so the transient waveforms give the designer a good starting point to estimate the output voltage overshoot/undershoot and required minimum output capacitance. To verify the design, it is important and recommended to actually build the circuit and evaluate its performance. The output transient waveform is the averaged waveform over a switching cycle. The switching frequency ripple is not included in this waveform. The user also needs to include the switching ripple for the total transient spike.

5.2

LTSPICETM SIMULATION

The LTpowerCAD Design Tool offers users the ability to simulate their designed circuits with the LTspice simulator, which is real-time simulation software that can be downloaded freely at the following URL: http://www.linear.com/designtools/software/ltspice.jsp.

Export to LTspice Simulation

In the design spreadsheet, there is an Export to LTspice button, usually located close to the circuit diagram in Part I. Clicking on this button brings up an Export LTspice file as window, which allows users to name and save their designs into an .asc file. An .asc file can be read and simulated by the LTspice simulator. The design tool automatically transfers all the component values to the .asc file.

After saving the LTspice simulation file, the design tool will ask if the LTspice simulator is already installed. If yes, the design tool opens the LTspice simulator. Then by clicking the RUN button and clicking the node to see the voltage waveform in the LTspice simulator, users can observe the performance of their designed circuits in both steady state and transient modes.

5.3

COMPONENT LIBRARY

The component library provides a convenient interface between the design programs and a list of popular components. Inside the LTpowerCAD design tool package, there are two standard libraries: the capacitor library with file extension .xcap, and the inductor library with file extension .xind. Please do NOT change the file type of these library files. To access the component libraries during designs, click on a capacitor or inductor symbol that is highlighted in blue; a window will pop up. Selecting the Add this component to the library button allows you to copy the parameters of a chosen capacitor or inductor to the corresponding library for later use. Selecting the Find a component from the library button allows you to select a component from a standard library and copy its parameter to the current design spreadsheet.

After selecting either Add this component to the library or Find a component from the library, the program will ask you to select a component library to open. If a correct library file is already open, it will be listed in the white box. In this case, select a library from the list and click on the Go to Library button activates this library. If no component library is open, please click on the Open Library button and an Open Library window will show for you to specify the library file that you wish to open. Please note that only an .xcap file can be specified as a capacitor library, and only a .xind file can be specified as an inductor library. The default capacitor library is located at \LTpowerCAD\LTClib\Standard.xcap; the default inductor library is located at \LTpowerCAD\LTClib\Standard.xind.

After an appropriate component library file has been opened, if Add this component to the library was selected earlier, then the spreadsheet component parameters will be automatically transferred to the library file. If Find a component from the library was selected, then clicking on any row of the library sheet will enable you to copy it to the design spreadsheet. The standard.xcap and standard.xind files can be duplicated as long as they keep the same file extension. The duplicated files can also interface with a design spreadsheet as described above. In addition, the library files can be opened independently, allowing users to edit or add components freely.

5.4

PCB LAYOUT EXAMPLE

A reference PCB layout example for each Linear Technology Monolithic and uModule Part in the LTpowerCAD Design Tool is available by clicking the View Layout Example button, which is usually located near the circuit diagram of the Design Spreadsheet. This function can quickly display a reference PCB layout design as well as important instructions for the corresponding Linear Technology Part for users to read and print. It is also recommended to view the datasheet regarding the layout considerations. A datasheet link is available at the top of each Design Spreadsheet.

THE ACCURACY OF THE LTPOWERCAD DESIGN TOOL

As always, Linear Technology has made best efforts to support our customers with a quality design tool. However, due to model limitations and external component value variations, it remains the customers responsibility to verify the program's calculation results by actually building the circuit and evaluating its performance. Linear Technology verifies the loop Bode Plot and load transient for each Linear Technology Monolithic and uModule part released in the LTpowerCAD Design Tool with real bench tests on the Linear Technology Standard Demo Circuit Boards. Threrfore we have a good level of confidence in the accuracy of our loop designs. Users are always welcome to contact their local Linear Technology Sales Office for help.
