Baby Reebop Lab

Reebops are cute little creatures that scientists use to study traits and genetics because they produce offspring so quickly. With large numbers, it is easier to notice patterns in traits as they get passed from one generation to the next. Activity: Read each step carefully. As you complete each step, put a the left of the number. _____ 1. in the space to

Separate the reebop parents gene sets by color. (The pink set comes from the mother and the blue set from the father.) Check to see if you have 14 pink and 14 blue strips of paper. Notify your teacher if you are missing any. Arrange each colored set from longest to shortest FACE DOWN keeping the two colors separate. The papers represent the genes from each of the two parents that will give your baby reebop its traits. Pick one gene (paper) out of each pair of the same length for the pink color. You will have picked 7 pink papers; none of which are the same length. Next, repeat step 3 for the blue genes. When you finish, you will have a total of 14 genes7 pink and 7 bluewhich will determine your babys traits. Put the unused paper strips back in the envelope. Arrange the baby reebops genes FACE UP and organize by length. Record your new babys genetic code in your science notebook by writing the letters from both parents, copy the table below. REEBOP FAMILY PORTRAITS _____ 12. Draw and color a picture of your bouncing, baby reebop in your science notebook, label it Baby Reebop. Use colored pencils. Frame the picture with a border. The reebop parents each had: 2 antenna, 2 humps, orange nose, curly tail, 2 eyes, clear legs, 3 segments, and a headall held together by tendons, ligaments, and muscle. Use colored pencils to draw and color a portrait of each parent in your science notebook. Label the mothers portrait Mommy Reebop, label the fathers portrait Daddy Reebop. Now, drop off your baby in the community Reebop nursery (the box at the front of the classroom). After everyone has dropped off their babies in the nursery, we will need to complete the data table, shown on the next page, in order to answer the questions which follow. Please stay seated and wait for directions from your teacher before continuing. Copy the following table in your science notebook. Questions: Answer the following questions in your science notebook. Remember to use complete sentences! 1. 2. 3. Are there some traits that occur more often than others? If so, what are they? Are there some traits that occur less often than others? If so, what are they? Are there some traits that appear in the babies that do not appear in the mother and father? If so, what are they? Why do you think there is a difference in how often some traits occur? How do you think its possible for a trait to appear in a baby if neither parent shows that trait?
