Approach to Affordable Housing Delivery

Current Global Status

Slums Massive Backlog Poor Quality Small Units Un-Affordable Skill Shortage Unemployment

The Dilemma
The building industrys emphasis has traditionally been on commercially viable projects sidelining low-cost housing and the implicated low profit margins. As a rule, small contractors build lowcost affordable houses in traditional ineffective ways, with low quality materials, inferior workmanship, resulting in waste and rework, little or no professional support, and most importantly, no benefit of economy of scale.

The Opportunity
Due to the neglect of the poor and very poor over many decades, the real source of market promise is not the wealthy few in the developing world, or even the emerging middle-income consumers: It is the billions of aspiring poor who are joining the market economy for the first time.

Lean Production
One of the important principles under a lean production paradigm is termed lean assembly. This refers to simplifying the process of assembly through industrialisation, modularisations, standardisation, and continuous flow processes. The reduction of operations required for a production process means less chance of the occurrence of errors, waste and rework. This follows from the same logic that the fewer the number of operations, the higher the quality of the product and a predictive timeline, resulting in cost savings.
